Henry Jackson Van Dyke Jr. was an American author, educator, and clergyman (priest.) He was born on November 10th, 1852 in Germantown PA, and passed away on April 10th 1933, in Princeton NJ, at the age of 80. He passed away of natural causes in his home. Van Dyke was raised by his mother Henrietta Ashmead and father Henry Jackson Van Dyke Sr. Van Dyke married Ellen Reid of Baltimore in December 1881. The couple had nine children. His father was a respected Presbyterian clergyman and was his influence to become a minister. He attended the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and received his M. A. from Princeton University in 1876. In The Christmas Angel, Micheal, the tall, most powerful, angel, said “ there is no cure for this evil, but by the giving of greater force to the good hand.” This message is teaching us that we can defeat nothing without God, so we need to put our faith in him. Uriel, the seconds most powerful angel, then says “ power corrupts itself, and might cannot save. The earth is full of ignorant strife, and for this evil there is no cure but by giving of the greater knowledge. It it’s because men do not understand evil that they yield themselves to its power.” Often times in life, if we are given power over people, we can overtake ourselves and get prideful, falling away from our faith in God. And finally, when the Christmas Angel came and announced a saviour was going to be born, all the angels questioned him. “But if he is a man, he will be nailed to a cross and tortured by the wicked!” But the angel just replied, “I know it, but he will willingly be nailed to a cross and die for our sins. He will live a perfect life, and die on the cross so we can live his perfect life.” Jesus could have kept living his life, and gone to heaven.
