Contemporary issues in helping professions
A helping profession is one that helps an individual who has physical, psychological, emotional or intellectual issues to help him cope with these issues. These professions include nursing, psychology, social work and life coaching.
The following are some of the top issues that affect helping professions: cultural diversity, helper burnout, communication, education and training and rights and ethics. These issues are a challenge to the helping professions. They should therefore be addressed and solutions determined for maximum benefit of both the helper and the client.

Therefore, for the helper to provide good advice to the client, he or she should have good communication skills. The helper also needs good communication skills to pass relevant information pertaining the client to the relatives and other significant others.
Education and training
Training and education of the helping professionals is essential for them to understand the various issues that affect their clients and how to provide help. Training is also important for one to be licensed as a helping professional since one cannot practice without a valid license. Current education knowledge is also important in helping the helper to discover new methods of helping their clients as opposed to the old. They therefore attend training conferences where they get the current information.
Training and educating the client is also part of the helping profession. Education is provided to the client on her condition and how to improve it. This helps the client to make an informed decision about the care he/she needs. The helper also trains the client on how to carry different activities such as relation techniques for the stressed. The client then practices what he/she has been trained therefore promoting his/her wellbeing.

Being culturally aware and knowledgeable is a must when working in any type of healthcare field. In our society today, we have an array of different cultures and making patients feel comfortable and at easy is our primary goal. Diversity training is something that is a must for each healthcare professional and should be the basis of our healthcare education.

As we all know, there is a solution to every problem - but having the resources and support to resolve one of these could be the hindrance to a satisfying outcome for you, the worker. Often, one feels they haven't done enough to meet the client's needs, especially when you keep hitting road blocks, therefore you go above and beyond - often putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation in the long run. I can see these two concerns listed as being a personal challenge for any human service professional.
The counseling session should be centered on the client and their understanding of their world and/or problems not heavily weighted on the counselor interpretation of the client’s situation. The role of the counselor is to examine a problem needs changing and discover options in overcoming their problem. Bringing about change can help change the client’s narrative on their problem in the future and/or on life in the process.
Counseling skills has provided me with a valuable insight into the helping relationship and how it is both created and maintained in order to encourage growth and development in the client. The factors involved within the helping relationship include considering Roger’s core conditions, congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy as the three main characteristics necessary in a helping relationship. In order to fully incorporate all three of Roger’s core conditions, I as the counselor must be self-aware, as a lack of self-awareness may inhibit truly listening and understanding the client; self-awareness can be enhanced through exercises such as Johari’s window. Counseling skills such as body language and active listening also plays a role within encouraging the client to open up and can help me as the counselor convey empathy.
The relationship between the person seeking help and the nurse/counsellor should be appropriate for producing therapeutic change, to ensure that the patient maximizes from the therapeutic relationship. The health care provider should ensure that they communicate effectively to the patient/client. The skills explained in the above essay are the relevant skills that nurses in the contemporary hospital environment should adhere to and respect.

All of the above contributes to an individual’s health and so it’s very important that we are able to control our emotions, correct and learn from our mistakes, examine and balance our life and create a therapeutic environment so that our clients feel comfortable, safe and trust us enough to live their life in our hands.
The relationship between the counsellor and client is fundamental to the success of the counselling experience and the results that will follow. The counsellor and client need to build rapport and trust. The client needs to feel comfortable enough to open up and discuss their inner most thoughts and fears in the knowledge that the discussion is confidential and non-judgemental. The resulting relationship should be one of mutual respect.
Workers in the helping professions endure a massive amount of ethical and professional issues. These issues affect the practice of counseling and the relationship with the client. The book Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions by Corey, Corey, and Hallanan gives many themes that one will encounter throughout their career. The book also gives possible solutions to problems and stimulates different ways to think about issues. The authors of this book provide good knowledge and information for anyone in the helping professions.
Culture may be defined in a broad and narrow context. The broad definition includes demographic variables ( age, gender), status variables ( social, educational, economic) and affiliations ( formal and informal), as well as ethnographic variables, such as ethnicity, nationality, language. Narrow definition of culture is limited to the terms of ethnicity and nationality, which are important for individual and familial identity, but the concept of culture in Counselling usually goes beyond national and ethnic boundaries. It interprets culture in a broader aspect, it aims to go beyond its more obvious and verifiable symbols toward the more subjective perspectives its members hold. Counselling deals with the subjective aspect of culture, which refers to the internalised feeling, attitudes, opinions and assumptions that members of a particular culture hold, as well as with the objective, which involves visible aspects, that are culturally adopted and determined and can be identified by both persons within and outside a given culture.

There are few circumstances counselors have to oblige when dealing issues from clients. Counselors have to be trustworthy; this is a fundamental to understanding and solving issues. Counselors have to keep information gathered confidential and restrict any disclosure of information to anybody. Clients voluntarily seek help to counselors for therapy or any kind of help they need. Hence as a counselor it is important to respect their clients’ self-government and ensure precision in information given. Commitment of a counselor plays a big role in a therapy. It is not ethical for a counselor to neglect a client such that the client’s well being is not taken care of. It is also important for counselors to have a fair treatment with all their clients. Everyone has struggled through difficult situations, but eventually we learn from our mistakes and try to overcome them. The theory explains how Lawrence Grossberg discusses the theory of the cultural studies and how it affects the present and future, the struggles people have to go through for example, economics, culture, media and politics. Therefore, in today’s society we all have encountered cultural differences in our everyday life experiences and have changed the way we look at life for the better or worse. Cultural diversity is in our workplace and schools; we may encounter stereotypes while communicating with others, even though we have different opinions about their cultures, values and beliefs.
Helping consists of four parts, those being; (1) an individual seeking help, (2) an individual that is willing to help those seeking help, (3) the helping individual is competent and skilled enough to train, and (4) an environment that is conducive for help to be given and received.
