Helping Hand is a faith-based organization that is committed to putting an end to hunger throughout Tennessee and surrounding areas. Helping hand was founded on January 1, 1992 beginning with a single food pantry in Knoxville, TN. The initial thought was to help local families stricken with poverty, so that they would not have to go hungry while trying to get their lives back together. This was done while sharing the love of God with no discrimination. This ministry escalated quickly after seeing all of the help that families needed. It became evident that there was a greater need that Helping Hand could fulfill. Within the first year the organization added a shelter for the homeless and meal programs that offered hot meals. Helping Hand’s Board of Directors consists a Chief Executive Officer, Chief Finance Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Vice President of Finance, Secretary, Vice President of Programs, and a Vice President of Relations. The governing board holds ultimate responsibility for the nonprofit organization (Worth, 2014, p.94). This is our time to lead Helping Hand in the direction it needs to go. We have to stress our responsibilities such as legal responsibilities, functional responsibilities, and they establish standards for the organizations performance. I felt that we should use the SWOT analysis for analyzing our condition as an organization. This approach identifies the strength (S), weaknesses (W), opportunities (O), and threats (T). The purpose of this analysis is to develop a comparison between the organization’s strengths and weaknesses and the opportunities and threats facing it in the external environment, in order to identify strategic issues (Worth, 2014, p. 167). In June, we started interviewing our staff to find out key information about operations at each location. We complimented these interviews with a workshop in July. The workshop included members, donors, potential donors, and partners that we have. The interviews and the workshop turned out to be very beneficial. We were able to gather very valuable information that …show more content…
This is going to mean a deeper engagement with members and their work to get a greater focus on developing public image to help with the needed support for the organization. We look to build upon existing relationships and also create new ones that share the same vision that we do. Through collaboration, we came up with our Building the Future Strategic Plan. Building the Future will be implemented through four key priorities. We must work together to achieve our purpose as an organization. We must also include the means necessary to measure the success of our strategic

A SWOTT analysis is used to present a detailed picture of the health of a company. This tool can be used to tune up or diagnose and repair issues that are worn or in the process of becoming faulty. Managers have access to a tool that will allow them to effectively evaluate and make decisions. The SWOTT analysis can ensure that issues are identified and classified so they may be prioritized properly. The problem is shown so managers can see the answer.

After volunteering three times with the social action committee and high school group from Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church in the previous years, the Houston Food Bank became very familiar both in regards of their history and how their volunteerism works. The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization that seeks donations of non-perishable food items to serve the low-income families in eighteen counties across Texas. However, during a recent trip to the food bank with the University of Houston-Downtown College of Business, the interactions with a larger group of classmates became more dynamic. Three main topics involving group work at the Houston Food Bank are service learning, community service, and volunteerism. Service learning
It has 3 staff members in its Southern California Office; 2 staff members in its Northern California Office; and 1 staff member in its Central California Office (Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, n.d.). Actually, the total number of full-time employees of the Foundation is 6 for all its three branches. This is an indication that the organization may be suffering from financial resource constraints, which makes it unable to hire an adequate number of full-time employees, especially if it truly intends to achieve its objectives and goals. Poor financial resource and inadequate staff present a threat to the survival of this Foundation. Therefore, the Foundation tries to correct this deficit by implementing volunteer programs to assist in the running of its activities and programs (Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, n.d.). However, the overreliance on volunteers is also not healthy for an organization because volunteers require a lot of financial, material, and time resources to be invested in training them, which is evident that the foundation lacks. The end result is that most of the organization’s programs are never
The mission of the agency is to “provide for the needs of hungry people by gathering and sharing quality food with dignity, compassion, and education”. Volunteers were there to restock the shelves and bag the food for the clients. The staff duties consisted of interviewing clients and making sure the facility ran smoothly. Harvest Hope serves a diverse population residing within Lexington, West Columbia, and Cayce.
In 1978, when two executives Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank received news they were fired from their jobs at Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers, they decided to take something negative and turn it into an opportunity. They put their experience and knowledge of the business and industry together and developed a business plan to create a chain of home-improvement warehouses. Their idea was to create a business which would be larger and more profitable than any of their competitors. So in 1979, one year after being fired, they acquired their funding and opened three stores in Atlanta which they branded with the name Home Depot. Today, Home Depot is the world’s largest home improvement chain and second-largest retailer after Wal-Mart, operating approximately 2,250 stores throughout the Americas (Parnell, 2014).
I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. The Food Bank acts as a storage unit and distribution facility for smaller agencies and organizations such as schools, homeless shelters, churches, and day
Most people feel that they should help the needy in some way or another. The problem is how to help them. This problem generally arises when there is a person sitting on the side of the road in battered clothes with a cardboard sign asking for some form of help, almost always in the form of money. Yet something makes the giver uneasy. What will they do with this money? Do they need this money? Will it really help them? The truth of the matter is, it won't. However, there are things that can be done to help the needy. Giving money to a reliable foundation will help the helpless, something that transferring money from a pocket to a man's tin can will never do.
The Tarrant Area Food Bank is a prominent nonprofit organization that continuously works to fight hunger in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and does an excellent job at it. While their abilities may be limited, the Food Bank accomplishes as much as they can. From personal instances of volunteering, I know how wonderful the feeling of giving rather than receiving is in the long run. Throughout my work, in local food banks, community service projects, and research groups, my knowledge about the ever existing struggle of hunger is heightened, and I know how important it is for organizations such the Tarrant Area Food Bank to exist, operate, and serve. More necessary than the Food Bank, the responsibility lies on the volunteers to help spark the change
Most nonprofit volunteer groups can be described as holistic and geared toward supporting those that are disadvantaged. The volunteer seeks to meet a need and/or be a role model. The desire is to give tools to an individual that can make their situation better than it was before. Many nonprofits are religious based entities ran by pastoral leaders. Other nonprofits are mainly community based operations set up to meet a physical or emotional need, provide food, offer shelter, counseling, or utility assistance

This reflective essay will critically review my personal and professional skills that I am less confident in whilst in practise, which is essential for communication and developing effective relationships with others in an organization and even for personal development. The skills identified for improvement was highlighted in a skills audit for communication and effective relationships. A SWOT analysis was carried out to focus on the skills recognised, where finally an action plan was made to address how to improve the skills, what the challenges would be to develop them and how it is beneficial. The skills audit, SWOT analysis and the action plan are included as an appendices. It will also apply communication theories to
The SWOT analysis is a useful tool for identifying our personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to our plans and goals. According to a “Fuel My Motivation” article (2010), this analysis considers internal influences that can positively or negatively affect our ability to achieve our goals. The internal factors are our strengths and weaknesses. Also considered are opportunities and threats, which are external influences that can have a positive or negative impact on the ability to achieve our goals. I will share how the self-assessment instruments and self-exercises in this course have contributed to assessing and understanding my strengths and weaknesses. I will also discuss techniques I will use to leverage my strengths and understand my weaknesses. In addition, I will consider opportunities that I can take advantage of and the threats that can possibly impede my progress.
