Lexicon and Language
Language is the most critical tool in understanding the dialects and usage that may often be difficult without proper education and knowledge. Analyzing language is key to understanding and avoiding misunderstandings and misinformation about different cultures within our world, even generational differences within our own community. In continuing to discover language one needs to understand many things including; the key features that make up verbal and written languages. Language and lexicon go hand in hand when one starts to learn about communication. For Helen Keller, language was built from content and because she was so mentally mature when this building began, she could remember and relate to the process with a fully developed reasoning mind. The prolific author’s first word was ``water ' ', from her experience of a running stream over her hand. She then represented the word spelled in sign with her the hand. This way the word for ``water ' ' was created in her mind for the first time as the representation of something she could experience. Text is best described as being the words and sentences written on paper or of the same sort. Text refers to a conversation. Words make up sentences and sentences make up conversations.
Levels of Language
There are four levels of language structure and processing are phonemes, words, sentences, and texts. The first level of language structure and processing is phonemes. Phonemes are sounds; these sounds must be remembered and understood correctly according to the language. Phonemes make up words, which must be remembered and understood correctly according to the language.
Words make up sentences, which must be remembered and understood correctly according to the language. Sentences make up texts, which must be remembered and understood correctly according to the language.
In order to carry on a conversation with a person one must be able to correctly understand a language. In order to correctly understand a language one must be able to remember phonemes and words. Helen Keller, against all odds, became a mouthpiece for many causes in the early to mid-twentieth century. She advocated for causes such as building institutions for the blind, schools for the deaf, women’s suffrage and pacifism. When America was in the most desperate of times, her voice stood out. Helen Keller spoke at Carnegie Hall in New York raising her voice in protest of America’s decision to join the World War. The purpose of this paper will analyze the devices and methods Keller used in her speech to create a good ethos, pathos, and logos.
Amy Tan talks of the English she grew up with. Tan describes an English her mother uses and an English she shares with her husband. Tan sprinkles in the emotional intricacies of a personalized language that is burdened by misconceptions and apprehensively describes this language as “broken,” but expression through the use of a “broken language doesn’t invalidate what is being said, it doesn’t devoid passion, intention or imagination it simply differs from a normality. Envisage expression as ubiquitous. The differences rest in the vessels used to express. Here, I am using the English language, a grandiose entangling of words and a structured system, to indite my thoughts.
Keller in her essay “The Day Language Came into My Life” notes many contrasts between her lives before and after she acquired language. Keller even states at the beginning of her essay the “immeasurable contrast between the two lives which it connects” (72). When Keller first met her teacher Anne Mansfield Sullivan she described herself as dumb, expectant, like being at sea in a dense fog. Before language, Keller recalls her fingers lingered unconsciously on familiar objects such as leaves and blossoms. Before Keller met Anne Sullivan, she was not aware words even existed.
Helen Keller was a true American hero, in my eyes. She was born June, 27 1880 in Tuscumbia Alabama. Helens father was in the confederate army, and so was her grandfather on her mother’s side. Coincidentally one of Helen's ancestors was the first to teach to the deaf in Zurich; Helen did refer back to this in one of her autobiography. Helen was born able to see and hear, but by 19 months she became very ill. This disease was described by doctors as an acute congestion of her stomach and brain. Some doctors guessed that this might be Scarlett fever or meningitis, but never completely knew. Helen could communicate with the cooks daughter with a couple of made up hand signs, and by age seven she could communicate with her family using sixty different signs. Helen Keller’s mother eventually took her to different physicians, which in the end leaded her to Perkins Institute for the Blind. Helen Keller may be the world's most famous supercrip. Very few people can claim to have "overcome" disability so thoroughly and spectacularly. A blind and deaf wild child at the age of 7, she became, by the time she published The Story of My Life at 22, one of Radcliffe's most successful and polished students, fluent in Latin, Greek, German, French and (not least) English--not to mention three versions of Braille (English, American, New York Point) and the manual alphabet in which her renowned teacher Anne Sullivan first communicated with her. But let me dispense with the scare quotes for a moment. Helen Keller is famous--and justly so--precisely because she did, in many respects, overcome the physical impairments of deafness and blindness, as well as the formidable social obstacles facing people with disabilities at the end of the nineteenth century. Her story retains its power to startle and inspire even now, just as Anne Sullivan's story remains among the most startling and inspiring tales in the history of pedagogy.
Helen Keller, the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. Helen Keller won many awards and had many accomplishments in her lifetime, even though she had the disability of being blind and deaf. Helen Keller achieved more in a day than the average American could achieve in a lifetime. There were many movies made about Keller, and she wrote fourteen books. She was a widespread lecturer, and a member of the Socialist Party, a leading figure in the Suffragist movement, a member of the American Foundation for the Blind, and a member of the the right of industrial workers to have unions. Keller also fundraised for various associations throughout her life. Helen Keller’s disabilities did not get in her way as she won many awards and she also had many accomplishments in her lifetime.
Helen Keller is probably the most universally recognized disabled person of the twentieth century. (Others such as Franklin Roosevelt were equally well-known, but Keller is remembered primarily for her accomplishments which are disability-related.) Those of us who have grown up in the last half of this century have only known Keller as a figure of veneration. We know her primarily through popularized versions of her life such as the play "The Miracle Worker," or through her autobiographical works such as The Story of My Life (Keller, 1961 [1902]) and The World I Live In (Keller, 1908). Most of us have come away with the image of a more-than-human person living with the blessed support of an equally superhuman mentor, Annie Sullivan Macy.
The way language works, then, is that each person’s brain contains a lexicon of words and the concepts they stand for (a mental dictionary) and a set of rules that combine the words that convey relationships among concepts (a mental grammar) (Pinker 85). Language uses grammar which is a discrete combinational system that has two important consequences
Helen Keller is has changed the hearing, the deaf, and the blind culture. She inspired so many people to push beyond their limits and showed that, even the girl everyone called ‘dumb’ can be more than that. Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama in a small town on the Ivy Green Estate. On July 27th 1880, she was a perfectly normal baby, she could hear, and see. Until she was 19 months old she became very sick with a terrible she lost her hearing and her sight. She was called a ‘wild child’ because she couldn’t understand others losing her sight and hearing was unexpected for her and so she didn’t know how to communicate with others.
Helen Keller was a very inspiring person. She did so much in her life that inspires many. But, Helen Keller lived her life different from others. Helen Keller was blind and deaf. To me, this must've been very hard to accomplish anything in life. But she didn’t let those disabilities stop her from living her life. Keller was born normal just like everybody else. When she was born, she could hear and see. The sixth president, John Quincy Adams stated, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader" (Inspire Quotes). An individual one should admire is someone that inspires people to do great works. A good leader is a person who has gone through challenging situations and has overcome them. Helen Adams Keller proved that the odds were not against her. She learned to read, write, and spell all while she was blind and deaf. As a young child, she was referred to as a "tiny tyrant" that should be put into an asylum (Garret 32). With the help of her teacher, Helen Keller would be transformed from a tyrant to a beautiful woman who many looked up to.
Helen Keller, a political activist, an author. How is a single woman able accomplish many things, especially when that woman is deaf and blind? According to Helen Keller the key to becoming successful in her chosen field was by staying optimistic no matter what obstacle was thrown her way, and in Helen Keller’s case, she truly fit the description of an optimist.
