Heirloom vegetables may look the same as any other vegetables, but they are far from ordinary. The only difference is that they were not crossbred with other planted vegetables. When vegetables are referred to as heirloom it just means that they are from an old crop (“Hot Food Trend 2017”). Heirloom vegetables have many positive benefits. Many cooks prefer using heirloom vegetables because of their positive effects. Today’s society should be more open to the trend of heirloom vegetables because of their effects on health, their environmental effects, and their appealing attributes.
Heirloom vegetables can have some positive effects on the human body. According to Nancy Zeman, a journalist for The Prairie Press, heirloom vegetables can help prevent diseases. Other vegetables lose this

Michael Tortorello, a journalist for The New York Times, wrote the article “Heirloom Seeds of Flinty Hybrids?” in his article, he writes about a study done by the National Gardening Association that had a survey show that one in five Americans with a garden showed an interest in growing heirloom vegetables. According to the article “Benefits of Growing Your Own Fruits and Vegetables,” homegrown vegetables can cause us to use fewer pesticides or use natural pesticides. Using less or natural pesticides will cause less contamination to our environment (“Benefits of Growing Your Own Fruits and Vegetables”). In the article “Benefits of Growing Your Own Fruits and Vegetables” it is stated that growing our own vegetables can “turn unsightly lands into attractive landscapes.” Peels and waste from your homegrown vegetables can be recycled and used as composts to fertilize your garden instead of taking up stave in your garbage cans (“Benefits of Growing Your Own Fruits and Vegetables”). Imagining vegetable composts in your garbage may seem displeasing, but picturing vegetables on a plate of food would be much more
In “Springing Forward”, Barbara Kingsolver says, "whiz-kid hybrid seeds have slowly colonized and then dominated our catalogs and our croplands" (46). Her main point within the article states that today there are few heirloom vegetables because of the increase in genetically modified vegetables. Heirloom seeds are defined as seeds that are saved from the previous generation so that new crops can be grown and Kingsolver states that, "GM is a newer process
However I believe that if I start planting many fruit trees in my yard that can be a problem for me. Nowadays the houses in the city of Houston have many cables on the land. I know that because one day my mother and I were making a hole in the yard to plant a fruit tree and because the tree was large, she made the hole deeper, and we saw some cables in the ground. So I noticed that we could provoke an accident like destroying the whole electric system of my house or my neighbor’s houses. So I think that growing my own food has some benefits, but I just have to make sure that the food I plant does not take extensive amounts of land. For example, planting tomatoes it is a good idea, and I notice that because my mom had planted some in the yard. Tomatoes do not take too much space, do not grow too much, we save money, time, and we eat healthy. Because we have grown our own tomatoes, we can eat them happy knowing that we are eating high quality of food. In addition, I believe that growing my own vegetables in the yard decreases the chances of having diseases like cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Therefore, I am interested on knowing the benefits that people could have if they eat more organic
Steven Shapin is an expert when it comes to telling people the reality of the situation. In his, article “What Are You Buying When You Buy Organic?” Shapin exposes and explains the truth behind the word organic. He explains that our view on organic is not a reality. The small farms that we picture in our heads are really just big business in disguise and these big businesses are trying to do good by supposedly not using harmful pesticides. Which are supposed to not damage the environment but in reality they are probably not making any sort of difference. Some people care about the environment, while others are buying taste when it comes to organic food but using different pesticides are going to help the taste, only freshness tastes the best.
The main point of his article is that people take for granted their meals and have no idea of the process farmers go through to make our lives easier and our stomachs happy. Berry wants us to acknowledge farmers work and he wants us consumers to know more about the process and the food we consume each day. Now that I recall, we did have a vegetable garden last year, but we also had rabbits and two dogs. The story of the garden didn’t have a happy ending, but we did have vegetables, but not as good as they had at the store. Probably in the future, maybe in summer I’ll try to start a new vegetable garden and get informed about the importance of growing one.
It is true that growing foods on a farm show that there 's no bad “chemicals” added in the food which starts all out as seeds. If only it weren’t for the fact that again, college students just don’t have time. Along with that, some students live alone in an apartment complex and, I’m sure not too many apartments have an outside area big enough for a private garden. As a college student myself, I find it easier just going to the grocery stores and farmer’s markets to get my food; then again, I still live with my parents and they pay for the groceries. Thankfully, I don’t have to travel to the real farms to get farm-fresh produce; the food comes to local places like the hospital and downtown on certain dates. I suppose a tip for college students; in reality, traveling to the grocery store is easier because it’s a once-per-week-deal while keeping watch over a garden is an every-day-deal and students have things to keep up
Returning to organic farming, which our grandparents referred to as farming, and reclaiming our food is not only our choice, it is our right. Conventional farming practices are responsible for many negative health and environmental issues. One of the main issues is the creation of monocultures in the farming environment. Specifically, growing the same species of plants or animals in mass quantities without variation every season is not natural. Monocultures do not exist in nature (Pollan 67).
For years organic farmers and conventional farmers have feuded over which is superior. Organic farmers argue that their product is more eco-friendly because they do not use the synthetic chemicals and fertilizers conventional farmer’s use. Conventional farmers argue that their product is healthier and yields more. People tend to have stereotypes regarding the two types of farmers. Organic farmers are usually thought of as liberal, hippy, tree-huggers while conventional farmers are usually thought of as right-wing, industrialists. Obviously, some do adhere to this stereotype, but a majority of these farmers are normal, hardworking people. Although these farmers, both believe in their methods, one is no better than the other. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but there is no true superior method of crop farming.
A study of 362 datasets found that organic agriculture produces 80% of conventional yield with 21% standard deviation (Tomek et al. 2012). Second, organic farming requires less energy input which equates to less money spend from the farmers in addition to lowering carbon emissions. A study by the Department of Environment shows that organic agriculture uses 25 percent less than energy than their chemical counterparts, and certain crops like organic leeks and broccoli use 58 and 49 percent less, respectively (Bialis et al. 2013). Third, organic farming does not use pesticides. According to the World Health Center, 20,000 people die annually from the exposure of pesticides (Costa et al. 2014). Fourth, the methods that organic farmers use are better for the environment in the long run. And lastly, organic farming creates more jobs. A study done in United Kingdom shows 93,000 jobs could be created if Britain were to make a full scale shift to organic farming (Herro 2006). Although conventional agriculture is the primary producer for food currently, a large scale shift to organic agriculture is better suited to feed the world because organic agriculture can produce at adequate yield, requires less energy input, do not use
Organic food is generally not much healthier than regular fruits and such nutrition wise with a few exceptions. “Higher vitamin C concentrations were found in organic leafy vegetables, such as spinach, lettuce, and chard versus the same conventionally produced vegetables in 21 of 36 (58%) studies”( Foreman). Also mentioned is that organic and nonorganic milk is not much different as “In general, milk has the same protein, vitamin, trace mineral content, and lipids from both organically and conventionally reared cows.”( Foreman).Despite the exception, it has been stated that the exception does not have strong enough evidence that can let a statement such as “eating organic food is more beneficial than eating conventionally grown food” stand on its own and be taken seriously. Another unfortunate circumstance on organic food is the price. On average, anything organic is priced higher than non-organic food, and according to Digestive Specialists Inc., it “…costs anywhere from 20 to 100 percent more than regular produce” (Digestive Specialists). The higher price leaves any financially struggling person or family less likely to invest in organic food when there is always a cheaper option available, even if the cheaper product isn’t beneficial to their health. The reason for this, mentioned by Health Research Funding,“…Organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, they tend to produce smaller quantities. Their method of farming is also more labor-intensive with weed pulling and crop rotation. And then there is the issue of supply and demand – as the demand for organic produce increases, so does the price” (Health Research Funding). The quality of organic fruits, while being mostly free of pesticides and chemicals, can also have a lot less time to deteriorate compared to non-organic foods. To summarize the issue, Mayo Clinic states that, “Because organic fruits and vegetables aren 't
First of all, the main reason that people choose organic food is that people think organic foods have less chemical residue, such as pesticide, and fertilizer. In the article “Organic foods contain higher levels of certain nutrients, lower levels of pesticides, and may provide health benefits for the consumer”, Crinnion indicated that organic foods just had 33 percent of the amount of pesticide and fertilizer residues that found in conventional foods, and conventional foods contain two or more types of chemical residues than organic foods (Crinnion, 2010). In addition, Crinnion used a study of Seattle preschoolers as an example to demonstrate organic foods have less pesticide residues. The study of Seattle concluded that children who ate more conventional foods had six times higher level of pesticide resi...
As we stroll the aisles of our local supermarkets we see all kinds of food products, but does it ever occur to you how fresh or natural these products maybe. Organic farming prohibits any use of artificial chemicals, growth hormones, or antibiotics in the production of its crops and livestock. Organic farming has existed for centuries, but after the industrial revolution factory farming was arising. Organic farming does not allow the use of any pesticides in its crops or livestock production, but also helps sustain a good economic flow in rural communities. Although there are many benefits of organic farming, there is a lack of credibility some farmers provide within the distribution of their products and some argue that there’s no difference
You may ask why, because that is easier for them and sometimes some of the fruits and vegetables are not grown originally. If you didn't know gardening can help you in everyday life, like air pollution . Air pollution has gotten really bad, but gardens restore oxygen to help reduce the amount of air pollution that we get everyday. The community garden helps educate and teach a lot. Gardening can get the community together, learn about how much pollution, wastes and the world we are living in today.
The economy has forced some of us to grow gardens because the price of food has shot up and some people are also losing their jobs as a result of the failing economy. When a person looses their job, he/she have to do everything in their power to save money and be able to live so, they grow their own vegetables because it is cheaper to grow your own food than to buy it. Therefore, in the long run, it saves you money while at the same time making you healthier by eating fresh home grown vegetables. Also, the food that is grown in a home garden has not been sprayed with tons of chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides that are found in commercia...

...ocess helps reducing the loss of a large variety of species which is one of the biggest environmental concerns. Many of the vegetables travel in materials such as plastic and cardboard, by the time they arrive at the grocery store they absorb unwanted material and may lose nutrients. Growing your own vegetable garden benefit the environment by reducing the carbon emission and waste created by shipping and packaging vegetables. Environmental benefits of gardens include increasing previous surfaces and allowing for groundwater recharge, improving air quality through the addition of plants to the landscape, beautifying the environment and promoting sustainability. Of course, there are potentially negative environmental impacts associated with gardening the use of power tools uses energy, and water use is rising every year therefor we have to use wells and solar systems.
