Why are people so addicted to pop and any other fast food restaurants? Well did one know that “more than one third of U.S adults (35.7%) are obese” (www.cdc.gov)? It is common knowledge that the U.S has one of the highest obesity rates in the world for the reason that unhealthy food is so cheap there. Also, in the world, there are countless amounts of people who would prefer unhealthy food over healthy food considering it simply taste better. In addition, chemicals are added into unhealthy food and many are unaware of the fact that the food is detrimental to the body. Furthermore, in this generation, unhealthy food is overtaking the lives of many people. More people should be eating healthy food because it promotes health, decreases risk of disease and improves brain function to help progress through life. Many people who have poor eating habits suffer the consequence of diseases that damage the body. Eating healthy can result to decreasing the risk of getting cancer. It is proven that healthy eating is associated with reduced risk for many diseases, including several of the leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer and stroke and diabetes” (www.cdc.gov). Death or diseases is a serious matter for many individuals that are dealing with it. Healthy fats such as non-hydrogenated oils can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This is a serious disease that interferes with many individuals lives, for example having a heart attack and is why people should maintain a healthy diet. Finally, fruits and vegetables embody antioxidants that reduce the risk of getting cancer. Cancer comes in many shapes and forms the attacks the body like a deadly virus. There is no cure for cancer yet, people are dying. Healthy eating leads to a gr... ... middle of paper ... ...ects all ages and will damage anyone’s body at the same rate. To sum it all up, healthy eating has many benefits to it and it can significantly decrease the risk of getting a disease, promote health and improve daily brain function. Although people may think that it takes a while for people to produce a disease, it can actually hit someone in a second and cause a health problem. Also, unhealthy eating can lead to skin wrinkles and increase the rate of the average aging process. So overall, “we can make a commitment to promote vegetables and fruits and whole grains on every part of every menu. We can make portion sizes smaller and emphasize quality over quantity. And we can help create a culture - imagine this - where our kids ask for healthy options instead of resisting them (Michelle Obama, www.brainyquote.com/quotes). Therefore, healthy eating should be mandatory.
Fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society. Everywhere you turn you can see a fast food restaurant. An industry that modestly began with very few hot dog and hamburger vendors now has become a multi-international industry selling its products to paying customers. Fast food can be found anywhere imaginable. Fast food is now served at restaurants and drive-through, at stadiums, airports, schools all over the nation. Surprisingly fast food can even be found at hospital cafeterias. In the past, people in the United States used to eat healthier and prepared food with their families. Today, many young people prefer to eat fast food such as high fat hamburgers, French-fries, fried chicken, or pizza in fast
Nutrition and health have become more popular in today 's society. Our generation is becoming more and more indebted to the idea of being healthy and eating nutritious meals. However, in “The American Paradox,” by Michael Pollan he argues that our unhealthy population is preoccupied with nutrition and the idea of eating healthy than their actual health. He also mentions the food industry, nutrition science and how culture affects the way we eat and make food choices. While Pollan is right about all these factor that affect our eating habits, there is more to it than that. Convenience, affordability and social influence also affects our food choices making them inadequate.
Obesity is an epidemic in America. Fast food can be compared to the same type of mindless addiction as cigarettes, and can be equally as dangerous. Not only is there a problem with fast food restaurants, but the food industry as a whole. Slaughterhouses that control 80% of the market produce meat in such a way that is not healthy for consumption, in turn the products are doused in harmful chemicals and still served to the public. No wonder the obesity rate in America is 69% and rising. Obesity is a true problem in our country- people are neglecting their health and quite literally eating themselves to death.
In “Bad Food? Tax it, and Subsidize Vegetables”, Mark Bittman suggests that the people of America should stop eating unhealthy foods so often. In the article, Bittman tells his audience that people have “heart disease, diabetes and cancer are all in large part caused by the standard American Diet” (page 35). He also states that eating healthy can result to a better health care system saving millions of lives. The big issue is Americans eating unhealthy every day, but proposing a plan to help stop it from happening.
Take a second to understand why fast food firms choose to sell products that are unhealthy. Their unhealthy products are in a high demand in the food market; in fact, they are simply giving us what we demand for. Most firms have started putting food labels on their menus so there is no room for excuse when making the right food choices. Nobody is forcing us to eat a whole box of Krispy crème donuts or a super-size meal at McDonalds. I believe that we are always looking for shortcuts in life and now we can anticipate there is a shortcut in what we put into our bodies. So we are consistently after things that are cheap, fast and affordable. Who better to attend to our needs than the fast food industry?
Eating is extremely important, it is also important to eat healthy. Most Americans eat without any concerns; they are not questioning or researching what they are feeding themselves or their family. A lot of that has to do with their financial stability, not having the time to prepare a meal due to their time-consuming work schedule, also lack of knowledge and education on what they are consuming. In this bibliography, I will go over all three articles and explain what they are about.
The food that a person ingests often determines whether or not that person is at risk to have or develop cancer. Certain foods promote different cancers in different parts of the body. Diets high in animal protein especially promote cancers of the liver, large intestine, kidney and breast. Diets high in total fat (animal as well as plant - based) are particularly linked to cancers of the large intestine, prostate, breast and pancreas. Inadequate intakes of plant antioxidant vitamins (beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and many other similar substances) are implicated in many cancers. Food components can prevent cancer by mopping up highly reactive chemicals (free radicals) that act throughout the cancer process inhibiting cell division and enhancing the immune system, especially the so-called "natural killer cells". Food components also reduc...
Obesity is a big social issue in America. Due to the popularity of fast food and other unhealthy foods, more and more Americans are developing health diseases and disorders. We should be getting the correct daily nutrition amount, but because of our fast paced lifestyles we sometimes do not have enough time. Fast food restaurants make it possible to grab a meal and go. We often do not pay attention to the nutrition amount, but are simply looking for a quick bite to eat that will fulfill our hunger. Fast food is assisting in the increase of obesity in America (“Phrase” par.2).
Food addiction can lead to serious and difficult health concerns. Nevertheless, obesity has other health issues that comes with it as well. In the United States between 2007 and 2009 there has been a 1.1% increase of obesity (Pedram). There has been an assumption that if it continues by 2050 it would be close to 100% of Americans who would be obese (Pedram). This information explains that the increase in overconsumption of food can slowly make most Americans suffer from obesity. Another issue of obesity is that it is “the fifth leading cause of global death” (Pedram). Becoming a food addict can cause an individual into becoming obese that they may eventually face death. Food addiction has become quite a controversial that it is difficult to overcome as fast food restaurants are encouragement in individuals to choose the path of obesity. Nevertheless, obesity is still a health issue that is harmful and dangerous to an
When talking about school, we think of children learning different subjects, history, math, science and etc. I think learning about health and healthy life choices is as important as any other subject, and that should not just be restricted to classrooms. Schools have a great opportunity to educate young people about the importance of being healthy. We all know it is no secret that junk food makes you fat, but studies have shown that over the past ten years, obesity has doubled to 8.5 percent among six year olds and trebled to an astonishing 15 percent among 15 year olds. If we do not do anything about it, then this generation of children could be the first to live shorter lives than their parents.
Which all provide either ready to eat food, or it will be ready really quick, hence the name “fast food”. The process they use to make the food is very efficient, so efficient it makes you question if the food is really food. All the food is processed, all made in a factory somewhere, using god knows what kind of ingredients, then frozen and shipped to all the restaurants over America. People say that Americans are becoming addicted to it, or are addicted with the efficiency of it. Being able to stop quick, get fast food and go on about their day with minimal time loss. Why not right? Why wouldn't you save your time, by simply grabbing some fast food? Being that it’s so efficient, there’s no way that it’s going to have the same health value as a home cooked meal. Most of these meals are high in fat, calories, and sodium; this is because they are prepared in factories with little regard for dietary
The majority of people in this society try to exercise and eat right to stay healthy. The problem is that they worry more about exercising and not getting good nutrition. They do not understand that exercise is not enough to be healthy. In order to be healthy, people should be aware of what they eat. This may not be easy for everyone, but one can get support from family and friends in order for it to be easy. Good nutrition is more important than regular exercise because it helps in losing weight, helps to fuel the body, prevent the risk of getting diseases, and helps building muscles.
Obesity is just one of these issues, but it can lead to more severe problems such as diabetes. In Jamie Oliver’s episode series (Week 2) he takes an obese family to the doctor to check for diabetes. No one has it, but if they continue to eat unhealthy their chances will greatly increase. This family was eating fatty, frozen, sugary, and salty foods around the clock. Eating this way can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease and should be prevented as quickly as possible. Eating healthy and weight loss benefits health overall for people who have diabetes. Children in schools should be taught to eat healthy so they do not have to grow up and have these inconvenient, serious, health problems. However, diabetes is not the only health headache to worry about. “A study in 2007 found that eating processed meat increased the risk of getting bowel cancer.” (BuzzFeed) If people just ate less than seventy grams of processed meat per week there would be four thousand fewer cases of bowel cancer. Numerous schools sell processed meats to their students. Little do they know it could be the cause of cancer causing kids and teens to die. Processed foods are not the only foods causing cancers and deaths. “Trans fats are like plastic and when we eat them, they incorporate in our cells and our cells cannot communicate, or talk to one another. In terms, hormones are
Therefore, understanding the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle can help encourage healthier choices. There are a number of diseases that can result from living an unhealthy lifestyle such as type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Type 2 diabetes is defined as a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. Cardiovascular disease which includes heart attacks, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, damages blood vessels, places high levels of stress on the heart and ultimately may lead to a stroke. Due to living an unhealthy lifestyle an individual also increases the chance of being diagnosed with prostate, esophagus, kidney or pancreatic cancer. It is clear that there is a connection between lifestyle choices and chronic disease. According to the article “Chronic Diseases As a Result of Poor Lifestyle Choices” the author, Pan Koenig states that “A diet of fast food, highly processed or salty foods and large amounts of starchy carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, cereal, baked goods, sweets, sugary drinks, alcohol excess, overeating and lack of exercise are the primary causes of obesity”(5). It is clear that eating unhealthy foods will give an individual harmful diseases. Therefore, to prevent a life full of pain and disease an individual must begin to change and improve their quality of life today, but one cannot accomplish this on their own
It can also save a person from developing unwanted diseases and problems in the future, like obesity. However the more people practice eating healthy, the more they would feel good, physically and mentally and have a lot more energy. The more people practice eating healthy, the less feel they would have for reaching food junk foods. There are numerous amount of way that a person could stay healthy, but the main one is eating healthy. Working out, dieting and so forth, will work but it will only last that long until one regress back to the old ways. When a person eats healthy it is so much easier to keep the weight off, and they do not have to be worried about being obese or have any kind of bodily problems in the future. Eating healthy should be done for the sake of one own health and body, not the for the sake of showing the body off. Even though a person body might look fit, that doesn’t mean that they are eating healthy. It could also mean that they are not taking in enough nutrients. So it’s always good to eat
