Enabling people to increase control and improve their health is an emerging responsibility of healthcare professionals. The shift from curative health care has now shifted towards a model of prevention and promotion, with emphasis on participation in one’s own health and practice of healthy lifestyles (Benjamin, 2011). Within the last few decades, the concept of health promotion and disease prevention has caught the publics eye. Despite efforts to improve quality of life and overall health of individuals, the outcomes seem to remain inadequate (John, Dandona, Sharma, & Kakkar, 2011). Decreased medical costs, hospitalization stays, and prolonged living is associated with implementation of health promotion and disease prevention interventions (Jadelhack, 2011). Several studies have revealed that health education in combination with other interventions, have a significant impact on health outcomes. Within a specific study, knowledge on risk factors, influences of factors, and recommended treatment approach more than doubled after the intervention was in place. Also, within another study it was determined that health promoting behaviors were positively correlated with life satisfaction, overall psychological well-being. In fact, a 2006 study determined that increasing the use of preventive services that included tobacco cessation screening, alcohol abuse screening, and aspirin use. The study determined the nation could save $3.7 billion annually in medical costs. By shifting our nation's focus toward preventive health there will not only be a result in cost savings but, more importantly, it will save and improve lives of individuals (Benjamin, 2011). Managing diseases in today’s society can be very complex. With an increase in technology and research, healthcare has the ability to prevent and treat prior to exacerbations and disease occurrence. These diseases are currently being addressed by health care providers who are trying to understand why these NCDs are taking over our nation and populations. Physicians are recommending adult lifestyle changes to decrease the percentage of NCDs (Thiele & Anderson, 2016). Although these changes are very beneficial to overall health, these lifestyle modifications unfortunately do not reverse the impact of disease that has already occurred.
