Enabling people to increase control and improve their health is an emerging responsibility of healthcare professionals. The shift from curative health care has now shifted towards a model of prevention and promotion, with emphasis on participation in one’s own health and practice of healthy lifestyles (Benjamin, 2011). Within the last few decades, the concept of health promotion and disease prevention has caught the publics eye. Despite efforts to improve quality of life and overall health of individuals, the outcomes seem to remain inadequate (John, Dandona, Sharma, & Kakkar, 2011). There is a major gap in health and wellness education, the impedes on the effectiveness and efficacy on health care that is provided to patients’ and their families. …show more content…
Decreased medical costs, hospitalization stays, and prolonged living is associated with implementation of health promotion and disease prevention interventions (Jadelhack, 2011). Several studies have revealed that health education in combination with other interventions, have a significant impact on health outcomes. Within a specific study, knowledge on risk factors, influences of factors, and recommended treatment approach more than doubled after the intervention was in place. Also, within another study it was determined that health promoting behaviors were positively correlated with life satisfaction, overall psychological well-being. In fact, a 2006 study determined that increasing the use of preventive services that included tobacco cessation screening, alcohol abuse screening, and aspirin use. The study determined the nation could save $3.7 billion annually in medical costs. By shifting our nation's focus toward preventive health there will not only be a result in cost savings but, more importantly, it will save and improve lives of individuals (Benjamin, 2011). Managing diseases in today’s society can be very complex. With an increase in technology and research, healthcare has the ability to prevent and treat prior to exacerbations and disease occurrence. When preventive measures are not in place, poorer patient outcomes are noted (Qidwai, Nanji, Khoja, …show more content…
These diseases are currently being addressed by health care providers who are trying to understand why these NCDs are taking over our nation and populations. Physicians are recommending adult lifestyle changes to decrease the percentage of NCDs (Thiele & Anderson, 2016). Although these changes are very beneficial to overall health, these lifestyle modifications unfortunately do not reverse the impact of disease that has already occurred. The big question is why are these preventable NCDs impacting our nation to such a significant degree. The answer to creating a solution is health promotion and disease
D.P. receives an abundance of support in her life. She finds most of her motivation from her family because family means the world to her. The members in her family will encourage her to do her best along with attending diabetic information groups. She finds the support and motivation from her family to be a great way to help deal with her diabetes. Other family members who have diabetes or know someone else with diabetes helps her realize that this is not necessarily an ending of freedom or her life. The health care professionals also have an impact on D.P.’s motivational level as they give her options and techniques to improve her ways of living in order to cope with diabetes. “Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.” ( United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 , 2011). It acts as a national guide for disease prevention and health promotion. There are various objectives and goals which serve as the guideline to achieve overall improvement in health . ‘Educational and Community-Based Programs’ is one of them. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. There are a number of significant approaches that underpin the practice of health promotion. Tannahill (1996) postulated that all approaches are interrelated, but individually seen; they reflect distinctive ways of looking or approaches health issues. These models includes medical, education, behaviour change, empowerment and social change. The models that connect these approaches are Becker (1994), Claplan and Holland’s (1990), Beattie (1991), Tannahill Downie et al (1996) and Tones, Tones and Tilford (1994).
The purpose of the scholarly paper part two is to demonstrate the completion of the evidence-based homeless health promotion project; it is specific to the population living in Miami, Florida. Part two of the project presents evidence-based interventions to address measurable and unfavorable health outcomes associated with risk factors that were identified in part one of the project. Also, health promotion project evaluation will be provided.
Given the magnitude of health costs, both financial and in terms of human suffering, it is essential that preventive interventions be developed and/or enhanced. Nurses, physicians, and other helping professionals are in a good position, by virtue of their training, to add to such preventive efforts. Health is defined as a condition of physical, mental, and social well being and the absence of disease or other abnormal condition. It is not a static condition; constant change and adaptation to stress result in homeostasis (Mosby's Medical and Nursing Dictionary, 1994 p. 742). The fact that we can improve our health and extend our lives by changing our behaviors (i.e., eating well, exercising, not smoking, and reducing stress) supports the incorporation of health education, and prevention programs into a broad variety of settings.
One way to decrease the prevalence of deteriorating health for any population is by using preventive care measures (Andrews, & Boyle, 2008). The use of preventive care allows significant problems to be identified early which enables the resolution of the problem when it is still a minor issue (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2008). Often this strategy is more cost effective and require...
It is very important for Americans to be proactive with their health and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Americans suffer from many health issues such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, mental disorders and addiction. What is important to understand is that many of these diseases are preventative or the onset can be delayed and health risks reduced by utilizing preventative services. Healthy People 2020 is a national health promotion that focuses on helping individuals improve their health and increase longevity by improving infrastructure, expanding preventative service and promoting education and awareness.
To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. Therefore, health promotion is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy life-styles to wellbeing. Health promotion goes beyond health care. It puts health on the agenda of policy makers in all sectors and at all levels. It directs policy makers to be aware of the health consequences of their decisions and accept their responsibilities for
As part of the Healthy People 2020 initiative, a national goal has been set to improve the health and well-being of women, infants, children, and families. This is an important public health movement considering their well-being determines the health of the next generation and can help predict future public health challenges for families, communities, and the health care system. Since there are many social and physical determinants of maternal, infant, and child health, recent efforts have been focused on addressing disparities by employing a “life course” perspective to health promotion and disease prevention. MICH 10.2 is an objective that seeks to improve the population’s health and well-being by increasing the proportion of pregnant women
Prevention means looking beyond medical treatment of sick individuals to community-based public health efforts to prevent disease, improve functioning and well-being, and reduce health disparities. Nine preventable diseases are responsible for more than half of the deaths in the United States, yet less than 3% of health care spending is directed toward prevention (The Nader). Citizen with no means of payment for their healthcare do not go to the primary care provider regularly to get routine healthcare checks. The main reason is they cannot afford to pay their health care bills after checkup. Simple preventative diseases like high blood pressure if not attended to can become a stroke or heart attack which can easily lead to death.
In the healthcare world, it is tough for low-income families that have health issues to seek immediate care. There are expensive medical bills and demanding health insurance policies to stress about. Many of these families do not have the available resources for overall wellness and do not have access to education about medical conditions. During hospital stays, doctors diagnosis patients and nurses provide treatments along with a follow-up plan. This is done so patients know what to do once they leave the hospital. However, it is the responsibility of the patients to know where their health stands and take actions to stay healthy. In reality, not everyone is proactive with their health. Some people are unaware of their unhealthy lifestyle, so they continue with habits they have acquired. Whereas others are fully aware of their medical problems, and choose not to change. If hospitals not strictly focus on profit and give back to the community, then this will raise awareness of diseases.
The sugar industry has been around for a long time and has many effects. The book Sugar Changed the World, is mostly about its impact and effects on the world. The sugar industry is about how sugar has changed the world and the many effects of it on people. The authors develop their perspectives on negative and positive impacts on the world. Slaves deal with being controlled and have to work from the start of dawn to midnight.
Diseases and health issues have been present along all human history. From the beginning, the lack of knowledge has been influencing the likelihood of developing these issues. Even if many diseases had been eradicated due to the increase of health education and research, there are “silent” diseases affecting the population of the present days. Hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are the current problems that the vast majority do not consider as critic. However, these and some other diseases are currently the cause of most deaths among the population
Health promotion is the process of improving health status of a person and prevention of disease by enabling the person to take control of their health. It is not just the absence of disease (Maben, & Clark, 1995). Health promotion is commonly used term in health care world, and in current society the promotion of health has greater significance, especially with the rise in consumerism. Health promotion is a vital concept for nursing, symbolizing notions that nursing is related today. Nurses are being urged to take a health promotion role, and are deemed by others as an ideal role for them. It is therefore crucial that nurses cognize the meaning of health promotion and also what is expected from them by undertaking this
