Hospitals Giving Back To the Community

In the healthcare world, it is tough for low-income families that have health issues to seek immediate care. There are expensive medical bills and demanding health insurance policies to stress about. Many of these families do not have the available resources for overall wellness and do not have access to education about medical conditions. During hospital stays, doctors diagnosis patients and nurses provide treatments along with a follow-up plan. This is done so patients know what to do once they leave the hospital. However, it is the responsibility of the patients to know where their health stands and take actions to stay healthy. In reality, not everyone is proactive with their health. Some people are unaware of their unhealthy lifestyle, so they continue with habits they have acquired. Whereas others are fully aware of their medical problems, and choose not to change. If hospitals not strictly focus on profit and give back to the community, then this will raise awareness of diseases. The University of Kansas Hospital has an outstanding reputation due to the overall quality of the employees, especially medical professions. These medical experts are heavily involved with the hospital’s wellness programs that are aimed toward the inpatient and outpatient community. A program exists where a Quality Safety Investigator nurse is assigned to each nursing unit. Liz Carlton, an RN, says that, “Quality and safety can be improved by providing special training to nurses and then making them the bedside champion for best practices” (“Nurses become quality, safety investigators”). The uninsured patients are not only welcome, but encouraged to attend hospital wellness events.
