HEALTH LITERACY FOR CHILDREN
Health literacy is the understanding health information and been able to apply it. In order for health literacy to be effective it is believed that it should start early in life. As a community nurse at the Yvonne Learning Center, in a low-income urban area it is important to develop a Health Literacy Program for the children. This program will be developed in order to promote self-learning and ability to be self-sufficient in children that will be carried later on in life to adulthood.
Why is health literacy essential? By starting health literacy early in life, kids have a better chance of leading healthier lives (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Health literacy affects people's ability to navigate the healthcare system, share their personal information with their providers, and engage in management of chronic-diseases and self- care (US Department of Health and Human Services, n.d). Low health literacy has been known to lead to poor health outcomes such as less frequent use of preventive services, which leads to higher rates of hospitalizations, which are associated with higher healthcare costs (US Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). It is imperative to learn this skill early on as children as they will be carried out as adults.

In order to design this program there are some things to consider. First the age of the children and the literacy level of each group (age 3-7, 9-12, and 14-18). The community nurse needs to consider how to impact each age group. The nurse also needs to know the children’s knowledge toward their health. Also what resource are available in this neighborhood. As well as the cultural background and some of their family history. The community needs to be assess in order to know what these children need to learn about health
The number of programs and services available within community organizations in which provides a health promoting service is immense. As adults, all we want our children to be is happy and healthy. Therefore, leading us to believe and wish that such programs and services (for children) should not be necessary.
The underserved Black Belt Population is only fifty percent of the problem in this equation. However, it is in this community that the learning curve, for health care matters, is the steepest. All individuals across the world strive to acquire high levels of competence and literacy across all aspects of education. It is human nature to maintain good health, and to educate ourselves on how to sustain prominent, fulfilling lifestyles. In application to health, the first step in achieving adequate health requires one to know where to locate reliable information. Not only is it important to understand what it takes to create health, but also the process of preserving healthy habits at all times. The construct of Health Literacy illustrates this notion entirely—and can be defined as the capacity to obtain, communicate, process, and understand basic health information and services to make appropriate health decisions (CDC.gov).
However, health literacy is more than just read and write; it is the ability to understand and able to use health information to make choices about their health (Benyon, 2014). Low health literacy can have detrimental effect on the health of the client because it may cause misunderstand of the medical label or health information. According to McMurray & Clendon (2015), health literacy divided into three different levels which are functional, interactive/communicative and critical health literacy. As for functional levels, it is the most general and fundamental level for the general public because individuals need to receive and understand the information of health such as risk of health decision, consent forms, health instruction or medicine labels. (McMurray & Clendo , 2015) Turning to the next level, interactive/communicative health literacy, mainly involved personal skills to spread health knowledge to the community, and also , people are able to influence social norm and help others individuals to develop their personal health capacity. Because of this, understanding of how organization work and resounding communication skill which can help to support others and knowing how to get different health services other individuals need (McMurray & Clendo , 2015). The assessment most appropriate to discover the health issues in my community would be surveying. By doing surveys we can determine the knowledge the youth have and the problems they are facing. Data can be collected through community outreach. For example the health department could use polls, surveys, phone calls, and do interviews. When it comes to possible health hazards, the Florida health department provides a current hazard list in their website. The current hazards on the site are Zika fever and hurricane and severe weather. “Zika fever is a mild febrile illness caused by a mosquito-borne virus similar to those that cause dengue and West Nile virus” (Florida Health, 2018, p.2). In regards to hurricanes and severe weather the site offers information on “making a disaster preparedness kit, safety tips for home cleanup and repair, how to prepare you and your family before, during and after a storm” (Florida Health, 2018, p.4). Health literacy is a term not widely understood by the general population. It is defined as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information needed to make appropriate health decisions and services needed to prevent or treat illness,” (About health literacy, 2014). A person’s level of health literacy is based on their age, education level, socioeconomic standing, and cultural background. Patients with low health literacy have a more difficult time navigating the health care system. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this group of patients may find it harder to find medical services and health care providers, fill out health forms, provide their complete medical history with their providers, seek preventative care, understand the health risks associated with some behaviors, taking care of chronic health conditions, and understanding how to take prescribed medications (About health literacy, 2014). It is to a certain extent the patient’s responsibility to increase their own health literacy knowledge. But to what extent can they learn on their own? Those working in the health field have been trained to navigate the health system and understand the medical terms. They have the knowledge and capability to pass on that understanding to their patients. Health care professionals have a shared responsibility to help improve patients’ health literacy.
Health shapes our life, if you practice bad health practices, chances are you’re often sick, overweight, disease, or other medical issue. There are three main points of a person’s health, not just their physical health. The three parts are; social, mental/emotional, and of course physical. Setting health goals depends on age, body, and health of a person. I am 14 years old, and I am 5 feet tall, around 100 pounds. I’m generally the correct size for someone of my age. Though, it’s hard to achieve perfect health.
The government has been trying to address these concerns, but there is still a pressing need for more skilled healthcare professionals, particularly in rural areas (Anika & Nasif, 2022). Raising health literacy levels, particularly among marginalized groups, is crucial to enhancing health outcomes and narrowing disparities. It is imperative to educate them about the significance of preventive care and how to avail of it. It is essential to recognize that poverty, education, and healthcare access are interconnected factors contributing to health disparities. Addressing these issues together could help reduce these disparities and improve outcomes for vulnerable groups (Zajacova & Lawrence, 2018).

There has been a great deal of attention given by individuals, the media and by the government to Health Education. There is no doubt that a population which is “health literate” is significant for the sake of the “public health as a whole and consequently for public finances”(Tappe 2013) (Younghee 2013). Many countries, including the U.S., have realized just how vital these issues have become. Sadly however, the ability to understand basic health information, with or without health education, as well as access and process the services is only possessed by “50%”of the American public, resulting in the escalation of health care costs as well as poor decision making regarding health care.
Health is a vital component in our everyday life. If it is compromised, everything else goes down with it.
