If you have ever researched job titles for Health information management you should know that there are many job titles for an HIM professional. Today there are only three that I will be talking about. They are department director, medical records technician, and medical coding specialists. I will also be going into more detail about their job descriptions, education requirements and whether or not I would be interested in this particular job. The first job I am going to discuss is the department director position. They do not work directly with patients. Their main focus is on making sure there is accurate transcription a organization of patient medical histories, symptoms, diagnosis, and the arrangement of treatments and procedures for insurance billing purposes. They play a crucial role in health care facilities and hospitals. Education includes completing a certificate program and or an associates degree in MT or HIM. Health Information Management (HIM) professional: Will expect that the healthcare providers are honest, accurate in their diagnoses, and the charges are legal, fair, and correspond to services rendered on the given day. All inaccuracies must be corrected as soon as discovered to inspire confidence in the HIM professional, the facility, and all the organization’s employees. All stakeholders depend upon the HIM professional to maintain the accuracy, privacy and security of the patient’s medical charts, and thereby secure the reputation of the facility and welfare of the patients.
My studies through the IU School of Medicine have allowed me to become qualified for this position. I rotated for a month in the gross room, autopsy, and frozen section. They all taught me how to work with the residents and attendings and the different skills involved in each rotation.
The experience that I already have is in CNA which I know how to take blood pressure manually and also give bed baths and dress patients. I can also take vitals and be emotional support for the patients and their families. I can give them their meals and feed them and document their condition and any health problems or concerns. I can also assist them to their wheelchairs or in the beds. And I can examine their bodies for any scares rashes burns or anything that I may think that is concerning.
Higher paid than most jobs annually. The more the experience the more the pay you will receive. This is profession that is going to be increasing in open positions because of the baby booming population. But there are also disadvantages too. This career can become emotionally stressful/draining. You have to deal with many patients from day to day. Some patients are easier to handle than others. One credential that aligns with the type of job I’m seeking would be a certified medical office assistant. As a medical office assistant (MOA), I would be the first point of communication between patient and office, and I will be the one to set the tone for the patient’s experience. In addition to managing patients, MOAs also work behind the sections to organize appointments, lab test examinations, bring charts up to date, handle insurance repayments and other functions that may keep a medical office successively efficiently. Advances in technology have influences our society at home, work and in our health care. It all started with online banking, atm cards, and availability of children’s grades online, and buying tickets for social outings. There was nothing electronic about going the doctor’s office. Health care cost has been rising and medical errors resulting in loss of life cried for change. As technologies advanced, the process to reduce medical errors and protect important health care information was evolving. In January 2004, President Bush announced in the State of the Union address the plan to launch an electronic health record (EHR) within the next ten years (American Healthtech, 2012).
I feel that I'm suited for the HIM profession due to my dedication to keeping patient's information safe. I care for a single chart as though it is my personal information. I work a claim as though this could be me on the other end. I truly understand that a simple mistake could delay a payment or losing patient information could be detrimental to our patients and their future care.
My chosen profession is Healthcare Administration. Healthcare Administrators plan, direct, and coordinate health and medical services in many organizations.
