The concept of health is arbitrary and can differ from individual to individual. It is a diverse concept that introduces multiple complexities further deepening the meaning of what it is to be healthy. To me, health is experienced through the things I learn at school and from the people around me. As I was growing up, I was taught basic practices such as coughing into my sleeve and washing my hands to prevent the spread of germs. Growing up, what I always understood about health is just simply avoiding sickness. However, my perspective continuously changes as I experience events involving my health and the health of others. As I observe the people I interact with on a daily, I noticed how diverse everyone was. I am aware that everyone experiences health differently and I can understand why. The food they eat, family history, and religion and beliefs are some of the many factors that influence their health. Additionally, financial stability is another important factor that can influence one’s health. I am fortunate to live in a country that provides free health care and also live in a home that provides nutritious meals. However, there are many people in the world who do not share the same luxuries that I have. It pains me to think that achieving good health is as easy as eating the right food. Without the finances, it makes it almost impossible to even reach that certain necessity. Back in highschool, I coordinated a club that is based on a worldwide organization called “We.” My club focuses on caring for the well-being of others in the community and around the world. We hold a variety of fundraisers that donate basic needs to those who are less fortunate. I want to be able to provide those with the necessities they need to survive. My father was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago which created complications in my family. As his health declined, I watched him struggle to pretend that he was fine. Witnessing the disease slowly controlling his body affected me on an emotional level which began to alter my mental and physical health. Due to the overbearing stress of his cancer getting worse, I began to experience poor health from sore throats to colds. Additionally, I began to also feel more anxious than usual. The declining of my father’s health caused me to experience a sense of secondhand stress as I saw him struggle daily.
