I was a member of a hazardous material responder team, which was responsible for responding to spills of hazardous or unknown materials. This necessitated determining whether the material was hazardous, and if it was, then we were tasked with cleanup and disposal of the material in a way that was safe and in accordance to proper procedure. Procedures were driven by the organization, but had to either meet or exceed state regulations for hazardous material cleanup and disposal. This included very well-defined, strict rules and plans for collecting and disposing of hazardous material. Through social identification, individuals identify characteristics of a group as similar themselves and as enhancing their status or power (Latham, 2012). I found this to be true in my experience, and identified more readily to characteristics of the group that that were similar to myself, such as conscientiousness and attention to detail. …show more content…
In this way, the group also meaningfully distinguished the responder team from any other employee, as mentioned by Latham (2012), and also that this is more likely to happen in smaller groups. Only hazardous responders could even go near a spill until the identity of the substance was made known, and then only responders had the training to properly clean up the spill. Compared to the rest of the organization, the responder team was relatively small, which also fits with proposed team concepts. Additionally, identifying with the team helped to motivate me to be safe and cautious when dealing with known or unknown substances. The Chemical Corp is made up of many unconventional units all with unique training that is specifically tailored to their mission. A mission most people would never conceive to volunteer for. One of those groups is the Special Forces Chemical Detachment or (CDA’s). This specialized group is better known as a Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment (CRD) or a Chemical Decontamination Detachment (CDD). Each team is constructed in a unique manner, their purpose each individually crucial, created at a time when the world it most.
In today’s health care organizations, fewer and fewer individuals are working as solo practitioners ; instead, health care is increasingly delivered through teamwork, and teams are a vital component in health care organizations(McConnell,2006). Bauer and Erdogen (2009) define a team as a “cohesive coalition of people working together to achieve mutual goals”. (p.213). According to McConnell (2006) , teams are united by a shared purpose , regardless of the team’s type, composition, degree of performance, or reason for being. In health care organizations, teams are utilized by leaders to address problems and perform tasks. McConnell (2006) states that teams can benefit the organization because they provide greater expertise, enhance morale, improve personnel retention, increase flexibility, and create synergy in the workplace..
It is important that all team members are aware of their role within the group and that they are performed correctly to meet their goal. For example, at a nursing home a nurse and a CNA work closely together. As the CNA is preforming ADLs he/she is able to assess the patient for any problems that the resident may be having. The nurse is then made aware of any problems and may ask the CNA to assist in a situation such as turning the resident in order to administer a shot. By working together the medical staff are able to reach set health goals and help the patient more efficiently.

The rapid response team (RRT) main purpose is to save lives and decreases the risk for harm by providing care to patients before a respiratory or cardiac arrest occurs (Ignatavicius, 2013). All facilities have different protocols when it comes to activating the Rapid Response Team and Code Team. The rapid response team are on-site and always available, the rapid response team usually includes ICU nurses, intensivist, respiratory therapist, and a hospitalist. In most cases a nurse will call for the rapid response team, but the patient’s family also have the authority to activate the rapid response team. A nurse may activate the rapid response team if the patient has an acute change in heart rate, acute change in systolic blood pressure, acute change in respiratory rate, acute drop in O2 saturation, acute change in mental status, major drop in urine output (Resuscitation Central , 2010).The rapid response team does not replace the Code Team, who responds to a client who is actively in cardiac or respiratory arrests.
The model of American governance is based on multiple levels authority that begin with local government, extend to state government, and finally expand to the federal government. Each level of government has different jurisdictions, responsibility, and spheres of influence. While they seemingly operate on different levels the servicers they are responsible for can often overlap creating an interdependence between them (Liesbet, 2003). This interdependence between the various tiers of government is especially critical when it comes to emergency management. A critical incident, such as natural disaster or terrorist event, requires a coordinated effort by local, state, and federal agencies to be effective. Additionally, governmental agencies rely on and need to work well with community, non-profit, and private entities to prepare and response to critical incidents (Sylves, R. (2015).
There are many three levels to social structure which include the micro, meso, and macro levels. The micro level is the level that involves just yourself. This is the level that people are usually not ashamed of themselves and are not afraid to admit they are gay or are not ashamed of being a minority of any kind. This level is also the level that one can best feel their identity shaping and forming. The next level is the meso level. This level involves communities such as schools, at the workplace, or on a sports team. This is the level when people often categorize others into groups. One example of this happening was in the video of A Class Divided. At this level there was a sense of community, but also clear categories separating the class. Different eye colors were perceived as ideal or acceptable and if a child did not have that eye color, they were not privileged. In the RDSJ book, Gwyn Kirk and Margo Okazawa-Rey examine how people go the extra mile to fit in with the group standards and expectations. This for example, showed in the video What Would You Do? As people saw the kid stealing the bike, if there was nobody around people usually did not get involved, but if there was a crowd of people, more and more would come.
