Josh Billings once said “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself.” The loyalty of a dog is something that cannot be compared to anything else. Your dog will unconditionally love you and always be by your side. There are many magnificent examples of the loyalty dogs have shown to their human companions. From Hawkeye who laid at his fallen owner’s casket, to Hachiko who waited 10 years for his master, to Dorado who rescued his blind owner from the 9/11 attacks, dogs come through to show their loyalty over and over again.
The story of Hawkeye is one that is close to my heart. My dad’s cousin, Jon Tumilson, was a Navy Seal who was KIA when his chinook helicopter was shot down on August 6,2011. I had the privilege

of attending his funeral ceremonies. It was like no other funeral I had ever attended. It was filled with military personnel and all of Jon’s comrades. Despite the room being filled with hundreds of newsworthy men, the attention was all on Hawkeye, Jon’s beloved chocolate lab. Jon and Hawkeye had a bond like no other. No matter how long or how far away Jon was, their reunion was always something spectacular. However, this reunion was not as lighthearted. Upon Hawkeye’s arrival into the gym, he immediately went to Jon’s casket and laid before it. This funeral was not open-casket, but Hawkeye still knew it was his owner. There were no commands needed to make him stay. He simply laid there by his master throughout the entire service. Although Jon would no longer be Hawkeye’s master, Hawkeye would forever be loyal to him. Hachiko’s tale is one of the most well known stories of loyal dogs.
It is accounted in a book as well as being adapted into a movie. In 1924, Hachi was purchased by Professor Ueno, who worked at the local university. Every morning as the professor would leave to catch his train, Hachi would accompany him. Hachi would sit and wait patiently all day at the train station until the professors return. They continued this pattern until May of 1925, when the professor didn’t return. The professor had undergone a cerebral hemorrhage while he was at the university that day. Unfortunately, he passed away and never returned to the train station where his loyal companion was waiting. Hachi was given away after his owner’s death, but he consistently ran away to his old home. Eventually he must have realized that the Professor no longer lived at the house, so he went to the only other place they had been together. The train …show more content…
station. Over the next ten years, Hachi waited for the professor to return to him. Hachi was loyal to his master every day for 10 years until his own passing in 1935. Because of his loyalty to his owner, Hachi became a legendary public figure in Japan and around the world. His stuffed remains are housed in the National Science Museum of Japan in Tokyo. There is also a statue of Hachi and the professor in the train station where Hachi faithfully waited for his master. When you think of 9/11, you think of all the people who were loyal to their country and helping their fellow Americans.
However, there were dogs that played an important role in 9/11 as well. Omar Eduardo Riviera was a computer programmer who worked on the 71st floor of the World Trade Center. Riviera was blind and had a guide dog, Dorado, who accompanied him to work every day. On the day of the attacks, the duo moved towards the exit. However, Riviera felt that he would not be able to make it with all the stairs ahead of him. He decided to undo Dorado’s leash and gave him the command to go, thinking that at least Dorado would be able to escape.
At first, Dorado got drug along with the crowd trying to exit the building, but before long, he found his way back to his owner and rubbed against his leg. They made their way down the stairs together with Dorado leading the way. Soon a coworker saw them and made herself available to Riviera. With the coworker on onside and Dorado on the other, Riviera soon made it down the 71 flights of stairs. The journey took more than an hour, but without Dorado, Riviera wouldn’t have survived. Dorado’s loyalty literally saved Riviera’s life.
Josh Billings was correct when he said, “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more that you love yourself.” The loyalty of humans is nothing in comparison to the loyalty of dogs. What human do you know who would wait in a train station for their companion for ten years? Over and over dogs have
proven their loyalty to their companions no matter the circumstances.
The dogs of war by Michael Paterniti is an informative and heartwarming article about handler Marine Corporal Jose Armenta and his dog Zenit. And how handlers and dogs are trained without each other and how they are trained with each other. The way that Micheal Paterniti writes is excellent and well written but it is even better with the pictures, the pictures tie everything together.
First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans, by Katherine Rogers, articulates the history of the relationship between dogs and humans. Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals, by Marc Bekoff and Jessica Pierce, investigates if and how dogs exhibit morality. In both texts, anecdotes and observations are used to portray instances of dogs displaying cooperation, empathy, altruism, and, by extension, morality. Consequently, it stands to reason that dogs have a capacity for sociality, but how can the sociality of dogs be described? A dog’s capacity for sociality is the ability to form long term relationships with members of the same or other species. Dogs, in particular, dogs who hunt as well as dogs who play, are able to form long term relationships with humans and other dogs through trust, love,
Dogs have impacted the lives of 44% of American families and homes. People use dogs for much more than just a family friend. Dogs are used for special needs, assisting police, and hunting and tracking. Dogs should be appreciated and never taught to fight or be neglected. Dog fighting is unethical because man’s best friend shouldn’t have to fight for their lives.
People are beginning to take dogs for granted. They feel that it is just an animal with no feelings and don’t consider what kind of role a dog really ...
If I said that there is someone on this earth who loves you more than they love themselves, wouldn’t you want to meet them? A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself (Dog Quotes, n.d.). While most owners are aware of the amount of joy and laughter dogs bring to them and their family, they are unaware that their dogs love them unconditionally and can help them have better lives. They’re not just furry friends that gives people companionship; there are a number of proven health benefits for people.
First of all robotic pets do not love their owners. Why? They are computer chips: Pieces of metal stuck together with a microchip. Are robots good enough to replace the real ones. Real dogs love their owners and will be a companion no matter what. A robot cannot “And that might just be the problem”(Love in the Time of Robots Frank Mullin). A robot is
Training your dog is the most important part of canine companionship. A happy dog is one who has structure and boundaries. Dogs are pack animals, and as such, they need guidance in the behavior that you expect from them. If you don't follow through in this leadership role, then the dog will naturally feel as if it is his place to do so. A dog that understands that you are the leader will naturally be easier to train.
Every creature on earth is born with a purpose and everything happens for a reason. While A Dog’s Purpose was written by humorist W. Bruce Cameron, it brings up a deep philosophical question: “Why are we here?” This book told of a tale about a dog searching, pursuing, and fulfilling his purpose throughout the course of four lives. Everything Toby, Bailey, Ellie, and Buddy have ever experienced or learned gradually led to the completion of their final purpose.
Service men and women in the military get service dogs. These dogs help them do their job. Sometimes these service workers are hurt and discharged. After they are discharged their dogs are given to someone else. Very rarely do these service workers get their dogs back. These dogs don’t get reunited with their owners.
Mans bestfriend also loves fellowship. My dogs make life a lot of fun. Dogs also serve more then one purpace, great pets, etc. Making them a part of the family, to me includes, giving them a place to run free and play, the same you will allow for small children. Dogs to me and to many other are theroputic, and peacful.
“A dog is a man’s best friend” goes much deeper than the phrase might initially imply. Recently many medical journals have begun to identify with the many and varied benefits of pet ownership. Men have always relied upon animals for work, transportation, and survival. As times have changed, man has begun to appreciate a different bond with animals. Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
Dogs are wonderful creatures. They are loyal, dependable companions if given the opportunity. In recent years I have come to the opinion that we could learn something from these animals. We should also take a look at the manner in which they are being treated. Abandonment, irresponsible breeding, and neglect are only some of the ways that humans are failing the canine species.
One of the biggest phenomenon that happen, brought hardworking dogs from across the country to New York City to help out the search and rescue following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. No one knows exactly how many were in New York, but estimates state about 900 were there. At Ground Zero, the dogs worked every day to help in search and rescue for 10 days. They had day and night shifts bettwing 12 to 16 hours searching for survivors and human remains under the rubble while comforting victims and rescue workers. Out of all the dogs that helped out on that day there is still one known living search and rescue dog named Bretagne, who is more than 100 years old in human years and she just enjoyed her birthday back in New York
The next time you are deciding on a pet, remember that a dog has good behavior, better convenience, and the best loyalty any dog could have over a cat. There are many reasons to get a pet, but how could you pass up a dog, an animal who will faithfully love you forever.
Since animals, especially dogs, share similar emotions as people they to make great companions. Animals do show us how to love better, because their emotions are more pure than a human's. According to Mary Lou Randour, in "What Animals Can Teach Us About Spirituality", animals are spiritual companions to humans. She tells the story of a boy who, after murdering someone, receives a dog to care for as a form of therapy. The dog comforts him, and the teenager learns to love the animal over time. The boy's pet is "healing his soul" by teaching him how to love. Dogs give their masters unconditional love, never questioning the human's orders or disciplines. I thought the story of the dog appearing in the author's backyard as her dead grandfather was rather outlandish. All of Randour's examples of how animals influence our feelings were viable aside from the disappearing ghost dog.
