As I was watching Harry Potter on TBS, I saw how Ron Weasly affected Harry and how he acted and what he did because he knew Ron was there for him. Harry knew that whatever he did Ron was going to be there for him. Then I started to think to myself, Ron is a sidekick. From that idea, I believe the sidekick affects the story more than the main character. Without the sidekick, the main character won't have anyone he can rely on to help him. Therefore, they can't make those bold decisions to take down the enemy. So, what is the loyal companion/sidekick archetype? What exactly is an archetype? Also, how does the loyal companion/sidekick archetype affect the decision/choices the main character makes? All these questions build up to one idea. What …show more content…
is the most important idea about being humans that support the loyal companion archetype? I believe the reason we as humans want to help the one in charge is to show them the loyalty we have, and that we care for them. Before we examine and go in depth on what a loyal companion archetype is, let's find out what the definition of an archetype is. We need to find out what exactly is an archetype and why is it important. According to Carl Jung, “An archetype is an unlearned tendency to experience things in a certain way. That an archetype is a part of a story, The archetype is like a black hole in space. You only know it is there by how it draws matter and light to itself" (Jung, P2). Carl Jung explains in the article that an archetype is a part of the text that enhances your understanding of the story. He suggests you do not see the archetype. The archetype is throughout the story and the only way you will see the archetype is when you understand the full text. In this source, EBSCOhost says, "Jung believed such archetypal images and ideas reside in the unconscious level of the mind of every human being and are inherited from the ancestors of the race."(Jung, P1). This is also stating that the archetype enhances your learning and deepens the meaning of the text. It says archetypes directly affects humans and how they act. As seen in Batman and Robin, you see Robin will do anything to help Batman. In the story, Batman is captured and Robin wants to help. Batman does not want Robin to come help him because Batman does not think he is ready. Robin wanted to be looked at like an adult. Then if Batman is in trouble again, he will be called to help. Now that we know what an archetype is, let’s find out what the loyal companion archetype is.
The loyal companion is the character in the story that helps out the main character. The loyal companion is there to support the main character so the story can continue. According to Carl Jung, “The loyal companion archetype is the friend that helps the main character in the text. The Loyal Companion is a supporting archetype” (Carl Jung, P1). This is a supporting archetype. His presence is there so that the story can continue. The sidekick/loyal companion archetype is the character that will do anything for the main character. He usually goes out of his way to try and save the main character. For example, in Cinderella, the fairy godmother says,“Her godmother then touched her with her wand, and, at the same instant, her clothes turned into cloth of gold and silver, all beset with jewels. This done, she gave her a pair of glass slippers, the prettiest in the whole world. Being thus decked out, she got up into her coach; but her godmother, above all things, commanded her not to stay past midnight, telling her, at the same time, that if she stayed one moment longer, the coach would be a pumpkin again, her horses mice, her coachman a rat, her footmen lizards, and that her clothes would become just as they were before (Perrault, P1). The Fairy Godmother is there to guide her to happiness and love because she knows what Cinderella wants. The loyal Companion is there to help, and help …show more content…
with tough situations so the main character can be happy. As shown is these texts, we see this archetype supports the characters so that the can defeat the tough situation in front of them. We have what an archetype means, also what a loyal companion archetype is, lets see how the loyal companion affects the main character? In the book Hunger Games it states, “And suddenly, I'm not thinking of Gale but of Peeta and. Peeta! He saved my life!” (Suzanne, P120)Peta in hunger games is Katniss's sidekick. He will do anything to protect her; therefore, he risks his life and he befriends the killers so that he can get an advantage and help Katniss survive. He also shows he will help Katniss in every way possible because he feels he is her protector. Peta’s support he has for Katniss is shown throughout the story because he wants her to be with her family. As shown here, the main character is devoured with help and support from the loyal companion because all he wants to do is show that he is there. We have how the loyal companion affect the main character, now we find out how over time this loyal Companion archetype changes.
As shown in Batman and Robin, “As Batman goes to fight crime and Robin is left at home, Robin is informed that Batman is captured. Batman specifically told him not to come and get him. As Robin wants to help because he is loyal, he goes and he tries to save Batman" (Bob Kane, P32). As in the older versions of movies the loyal friend and or sidekick tries to risk their life to help the main character. As compared to hunger games, Peta helps Katniss from being attacked and risks his life so that she can win and go be with her family. Shown in Movies and Books over time, the main character is influenced by the sidekick. The main character would not make the bold decisions that he does if the sidekick was not there to help
him. What is the most important idea about being human that goes along with the loyal companion archetype? I believe the reason we as humans want to help the one in charge is to show them the loyalty we have, and that we care for them. They want to be trusted so they have more opportunities to show they are worthy. The sidekick archetype is shown throughout the most when the main character is in trouble. The sidekick affects the story because the main character would not make as bold decisions if the sidekick was not there to help. Humans want to help their best friends as much as possible to show we care and support them. Humans relate to the loyal companion archetype because we have an instinct to show our support and help the ones that we care about.
A hero puts other people before themselves and is admired for their qualities, courage, and achievements. A hero obtains knowledge throughout their journey of helping and healing. From Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huckleberry begins his journey with his first dilemma to save a slave, Jim. Huckleberry Finn begins to transform into a courageous hero when he learns the value of a human being.
A hero archetype is defined as a person who is admired or idolized for courage and outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Elizabeth and George care for other characters. George cares for Lennie Smalls and Elizabeth care for her husband John, and her family. Even though Lennie and John have done some bad and immoral things in their past, George and Elizabeth still take care of them. One way they can also compare is how they make sure their loved ones are fed. Elizabeth cooks and cleans for John. In the book (“Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men”) When George and Lennie stop to camp before they go to the ranch for their job. George makes a fire and shares food with Lennie. Another similarity is that Elizabeth and George both want their loved ones to feel loved. Elizabeth wants John to feel like she is not judging him because of his affair. George does not want anyone to hurt Lennie or make fun of him. Elizabeth and George both want to protect their dignity. Elizabeth tries to protect hers and John's dignity by lying in court about the reason she fired Abigail Williams. George lies about Lennie to their boss when they first meet to protect him from saying something he may regret. Another way they try to protect them is when Elizabeth wants John to lie to the court, and confess to being a witch. George wants Lennie
the traits of becoming a hero. Sometimes it would have to depend on the wisdom that the character has. It is their purpose to explain what is going on in this story to make it clear for the audience to understand. Even some stories have insights of what a person can do.
Before one can be considered a true hero, they must complete a series of eleven steps that put them up to the test. More simply, they must start with departure, then initiation, and finally return home. Harry Potter in Harry Potter the Sorcerer's Stone, courageously completes all of these steps and is therefore considered a hero. He strong-willingly embarks on a journey that challenges his limits and tests his bravery. Without any support from his family, and being the despised child, he defeats his enemy, Voldemort. To push through the worst challenges, and starting from nothing is what makes a true hero. As Joseph Campbell stated, “You enter the forest at the darkest point, where there is no path. Where there is a way or path, it is someone
The Outsiders by SE Hinton is a great coming-of-age novel that is about gangs, violent but also at the same time about love and brother ship. In the book, the society suddenly thinks the greasers, Pony, Johnny and Dally, are heroes. That really got me thinking. What is a hero?
Ancient sidekicks were static characters who existed for the sole purpose of advancing a hero’s story. A great example of this can be found in the 22nd century BC, Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh. As punishment for King Gilgamesh’s abuse of
To keep a strong friendship you need to stay loyal to one another just as much as Ponyboy and his brothers stay loyal to each other after stating in chapter twelve “If we don’t have each other, we don’t have anything.” Through passionate tone used by Sodapop throughout this quote we are shown that after everything they have been through that they trust each other and that staying together is all
A hero is someone who is admired for his/her courage and his/her need to help others. Some examples of heroes are Spiderman, Superman, Ironman, Superwoman, and Batman. However, the real heroes are strangers that risk their lives to help others. The book, The Outsiders, shows several heroes that sacrifice their own safety for the greater good. This book centers around the gang, greasers, and the feud between the greasers and Socs. Three characters that show enormous courage and save multiple lives are Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally. In S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders, Johnny, Ponyboy, Dally emerge as heroes because they all risk their lives for another.
An archetype is a reoccurring image, symbol, character or situation used to express a universal concept. The journey archetype is one of the most frequently used. It sends a character, whether they know or are unknowingly sent, to search for the truth of a piece of information in their life. That journey includes a series of trials and tribulations for the character to face in order to gain a grasp as to why they are on this ...
Imagine your worst nightmare where you are facing death. Now imagine the same nightmare but your life along with your best friends and loved one life is also on the line. That is how it is for heroes such as Woody. All your decisions leading up to one death defining event, which you hope your decisions were the right ones. Then, finally at the last moment, while you are tasting death, you escape. This is an example of how somebody can be transformed from being ordinary to a hero. Therefore, in the film, Toy Story 3, the storyteller explains how, we as humans, follow a hero's journey to overcome challenges by identifying a mentor and learning traits that can make us heroic.
Man needs companionship and has difficulty maintaining it because no humans think the exact same or have the exact same beliefs. To maintain a companion you must have things in common, you must be able to disagree with a sort of respectful understanding, and finally you must care legitimately about that person. These three requirements to preserve a companionship are at times arduous to keep true. Some people do not have the time, concern, or the ability to sustain a veritable friendship with a companion or companions.
Firstly, Ponyboy is a hero because of his courage and empathy towards other characters, as he is not afraid to help others in times of distress. Ponyboy demonstrates when he saves the troubled kids in the church fire. Ponyboy informs the teacher "I'll get them, don’t worry-(pg.78)" This quote demonstrates heroism because he is concerned about the kids in the church. He cared to

A person can be a hero for saving the life of one or of millions. Heroes are not only real people, but they are also fantasy figures. Children are extremely interested with legendary and fantasy figures because they take on such tasks as: difficult journeys, challenges with dragons, discovering lost treasure, and changing the nature of the world through their singular acts of courage and selflessness. They also endure much resistance, hardship, and danger. Often the hero learns valuable lessons about survival and self-reliance. Not only do heroes teach valuable lessons they give a child a sense of belonging. To a child, a hero is an invincible person who will change the world.
One of the most important details in a friendship is to never leave or forsake the other. A friend is also loyal, for example in the movie Lord of the Rings, Froto and Sam Wise had a wonderful fellowship. They lived in peace and in one accord. Also in the movie, gandalf sent froto on a mission. Froto was scared and he didn’t want to go on the journey by himself.
