Zoos are not a place to imprison animals. Harambe was a large 17 year old, Western lowland gorilla. On May 18, 2016 a 4 year old boy got curious and ventured into the gorilla enclosure. Harambe saw the boy fall in the moat and dragged him out of the water by his leg. The child spent at least 10 minutes in the enclosure and if Harambe had an intention to kill or harm the kid, he would have done it when the boy fell. There was even a video of Harambe holding hands with the boy. Witnesses claim that Harambe took the little boy to the highest point of the enclosure so the zookeepers could retrieve him. Harambe was fatally shot because the boy was thought to be in danger. That’s only one example of an animal shot dead because they were in a zoo. …show more content…
Once the man entered the enclosure, he started to bother the lions. He stripped off all his clothes before he got into the enclosure and police found a suicide note in his pants pocket. He started to throw rocks and whatever he could find at the lions and yelled very religious proverbs at them. Obviously the lions felt threatened and they attacked the man. The male lion was dragging the man to the den when police shot and killed both the lions on the spot. The innocent lions were murdered to save a man who wanted to end his own life. Another case of an animal being shot for no reason was Marius the giraffe. Marius was a beautiful male giraffe that lived in the Copenhagen zoo in Denmark. "Our giraffes are part of an international breeding program, which has a purpose of ensuring a sound and healthy population of giraffes," said Bengt Holst, scientific director at Copenhagen Zoo. Marius was “genetically unstable”. They were trying to avoid inbreeding. Marius was born due to inbreeding itself, people were afraid since he has a higher chance of inbreeding that the giraffes wouldn’t have a balanced population. He was a perfectly healthy giraffe. The zoo got a lot offers from other zoos to adopt Marius, their was also
Have you ever seen an animal sitting in a cage all alone with nothing to do. Well, zoos are trying to change that fact. They will allow the animals to live in an environment that is like their home. Many people don't realize this, but zoo are keeping and breeding these animals because they would not survive in the wild alone. In the three passages, ¨The Stripes Will Survive,¨ ¨The Zood Go Wild from No More Dodos,¨ ¨Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment.¨ All of these articles present one claim, that is that the role of zoos is no longer to keep animal, but to protect them.
Peoples Trust article “Zoos & Conservation” touched surface solely on zoos located in Britain. What about the rest of the world? Luckily there is a group called the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) that inspects zoos and aquariums making sure that they are fit for conservation. For instance, the Giza Zoo In Cairo was shut down for killing two gorillas that may have been infected with disease and for extra pay putting visitors in danger so they could pet any animal they requested. Now if one of these animals were to attack a visitor then they would put down the animal in which is just doing what its instincts tell them.
Monarda fisctulosa had various uses for the Native Americans. This multipurpose plant may also be known as Bee Balm, horsemint, wild oregano, or many more. The most common name is bee balm due to the multitude of bees that are drawn in; some rest on the back side of flower petals, while others spread pollen between the plants. In total, there is approximately fifteen known species currently growing. The parts of the plant can be consumed in a variety of ways. The plant was, and still is, used to treat many issues and illnesses. This paper will describe the characteristics of Monarda, and the many uses for the leaves and flowers.
Harambe is clearly the victim in this case because the screaming crowd, mother, and child terrorized him. He was simply using his defense mechanisms because of the agony he was facing. The zoo had no other choice but to shoot the ape in fear of something worse happening to the boy. Ultimately, it is the gorilla that had to pay the price and no money or science can bring his precious life back.
During the summer of 2015, a well known lion named Cecil was killed in Zimbabwe by an American dentist, Dr. Walter James Palmer. A major uproar was caused in the media, especially since Palmer did not even hunt on legal hunting grounds. “Dr. Palmer admitted to killing Cecil and sent a statement to the Minneapolis Star Tribune stating he believed all
Keeping animals locked in cages, bored and cramped up in such a small space is an awful sight to show the children. It creates an image in the little minds of children that animals are to be treated like they don’t matter. They say Zoos are a place where children can learn about the wild, exotic animals, but in reality it doesn't teach them anything only that they are meant to be caged up, which is wrong. Also, it is really painful to see the animals bored and lonely, so why should people keep letting them do this to these beautiful creatures. Animal captivity for entertainment should end to let them go to their rightful home.
homas Nast was a political cartoonist in the 19th century. Nast was born September 27, 1840 In Germany.(biography.com) Nast used comedy as a way to get political points across to readers. He was known for exposing the corruption going on with “boss” Tweed. Tweed was a corrupt politician that bribed his way to the top, which made him more money in the long run. Tweed was ok with articles being ran about him because the vast majority of his constituents were irish immigrants and could not read.(blog.mcny.org) They could understand Nast’s cartoons though. Nast’s cartoons played a major role in incriminating Tweed. Because of Nast, we in the 21st century now have media like South Park as a way to get across deep messages in humorous ways. South
In fact, zoos take all necessary precautions to make sure that the animals and the attendees are all safe in the captivity of the zoo. As a matter of fact, trainers always have experience in the field that they will be working in so that no one, including themselves, gets hurt. The enclosures are very well protected and sealed to make sure that no animals escape and no humans get inside to be hurt by the animals or to hurt the animal. Of course, there are also security cameras to make sure that all humans are safe where they are and no one in the near future will be hurt. In addition,
Didn't you always think history is fun and easy? Well that's not always the case. In this paper I will talk to you about Masada. The three points I will have is the history, life and death of Masada. In these couple paragraphs I will talk about the history of Masada.
One of the many disadvantages animals have is being locked in cages of zoos, is to enjoy the quality of freedom and independence. The animals can’t enjoy the satisfaction of catching their own prey, or the relief of living in their own natural habitat. Plus, the size of the zoo provides for the animals is too small, so the animals don’t get the proper exercise like they would in the wild. Studies have shown tigers and lions have around 18,000 times less space in zoos then they would in their natural habitat. In fact , Woburn Safari Parks was keeping its lion...
“I have no use for zoos. When I become world dictator my first job is to go around carefully opening all the cells of all the zoos in the world. I say carefully because most of the animals have been locked up for a few years and may be a bit….unreliable.” These are the words of Farley Mowat, an environmentalist and activist. In short Mowat was trying say that many animals have been caged inside zoos for many years sometimes even generations of animals. If these animals could have revenge it would be terrible for humankind. Despite Zoos assertions that they help rehabilitate animals that need care and that they are saving endangered species, they have failed to realize that the animals are not living healthy lives in confinement. Zoos should not be a necessary part of society because they do not help with animal conservation in
The events of The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born takes place between Passion Week in 1965 and February 25, 1966, the day after Ghana’s first president was overthrown. The “new black leaders with white souls” (Armah 2) have used their positions of power for personal gain. The corruption based on authoritative intimidation, bribery, and fraud has trickled down to all levels of society. When ruled by corrupt leaders who promote power and wealth through unethical practices filter down to society, do unethical practices become the social norm? In attempt to resist widespread moral decay and loss of good virtue in society, can a virtuous soul jump over the hurdles of corruption to live in prosperity or go insane in
Animals should not be held captive in zoos because it is inhumane and unfair to the animals. There are so many records of terrible things that have happened to animals in zoos over the past few centuries, the go under the radar too often. Too few people even know about these animal care atrocities, and therefore the New York Times decided to bring light upon this situation. The Times did a first-of-its-kind analysis of 390 elephant fatalities at accredited U.S. zoos over the past 50 years (Berens 3). It found that most of the elephants died from injury or disease linked to conditions of their captivity, from chronic foot problems caused by standing on hard surfaces to musculoskeletal disorders from inactivity caused by being penned or chained for days and weeks at a time.
Zoos are an unsuitable environment for wild animals and should, therefore, be abolished. Firstly, zoo animals are kept in a very confined area compared to their vast natural habitat. Secondly, breeding programmes are far less successful than zoos claim. Thirdly, zoo animals are exposed to many diseases and other dangers. Zoo animals are usually kept in very cramped enclosures and do not behave like their wild counterparts.
Wild animals in captivity will never have to fight for survival, making zoos safer for the animals than the wild. They do not have to defend their terrain. Confinement keeps them safe from predators that might otherwise shorten their lives in the wild. Most people know little about wild animals or their domains, and visiting a zoo is an enriching educational experience that cannot be matched in a classroom or laboratory. Viewing wild animals up close in an area that provides for their well being and comfort is an excellent way to learn more about these creatures that can otherwise be taught in a formal setting. Although these points are mostly true, animals in captivity face much more death and horrible ordeals than they would naturally, and education about animals can still be provided by going on safaris, watching documentaries, and going to animal
