Since he found out the truth about his father's death, Hamlets only goal has been to get revenge on Claudius, but he feels that he has done nothing. Hamlet judges himself harshly which we see in the first line when he says, “O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!” (II, ii. I 520). In self-conflict, Hamlet degrades himself for being too hesitant in pursuing his plot of revenge. He feels he isn't the man that he or his father would want him to be, and thus is useless. Shakespeare's primary goal of Hamlet's speech is to reveal Hamlet's true feelings. “ (II, ii. II 523-527). The actor can put on a “mask” and express emotions that are not true, which is Hamlet's flaw. Hamlet resents that he is unable to do this which is the sole reason that his plan is being hindered. The emotional connection he had to his father overpowers his ability to act more passionate about his role in the revenge. Shakespeare focuses Hamlet's thoughts on the fact that he thinks of himself as meaningless. We see this further when Hamlet says, “Am I a coward?” ( II, ii. I 543). Hamlet judges himself as a “coward” as a result of his inability to act. Shakespeare's goal of the speech is embodied by this simple phrase. Hamlet feels vulnerable because so much is expected out of him, and the things he has to do are his weaknesses. At the opening of the play Hamlet is portrayed as a stable individual . He expresses disappointment in his mother for her seeming disregard for his father's death. His feelings are justified and his actions are rational at this point, he describes himself as being genuine. As this scene progresses it is revealed that Hamlet views himself as being weak: "My father's brother, but no more like my father/ than I to Hercules" (1.2.153) The doubts that Hamlet has concerning his heroism become particularly evident in his actions as the story progresses. These doubts are a major hindrance to his thoughts of revenge.

While many scenes depict many of these characteristic’s if not more than one, Act 5 Scene 1 is renownedly known for exhibiting all five of these characteristics in just a few paragraphs. With Shakespeare’s writing technique imagery, repletion, and metaphors expressed throughout this scene, it allows for the reader to receive a clear image of what is going through Hamlets mind.
Am I a coward? Who calls me ‘villain’? ” (II, II 597-599). In this case, calling Hamlet a villain would be considered an understatement because although Hamlet has thoughts and has wicked ways up his sleeve to confront Claudius to make him look like the criminal. He really hasn’t done anything life threatening yet to Claudius, that would provoke the audience to think of him as the villain. In the opposite hand, calling Hamlet a coward would be more accurate, because not only is he torn in between what to do next and how a play is going to help his next motive, Hamlet has so much upon his shoulders like the ghost of his father, Claudius taking the throne before Hamlet. That he wants to be able to do something according to seeking vengeance against his uncle, but wouldn’t want it to be so malicious that he becomes known as the noble villain rather the sulking, mad noble son. Furthermore, as Hamlet is torn in between what to do next and whether his inquiries will make him a coward or a villain, Hamlet is even more mad, because not only is it hard for him to come to a conclusion, but Shakespeare empathises that Hamlet wants to see his uncle be pleaded guilty, through actions like a play which can toy with human emotions. But by doing so, Hamlet doesn’t want to be identified as neither a villain nor a coward, like he is too weak to do something
The interpretation of Hamlet’s, To Be or Not to Be soliloquy, from the Shakespearean classic of the same name, is an important part of the way that the audience understands an interpretation of the play. Although the words are the same, the scene is presented by the actors who portray Hamlet can vary between versions of the play. These differences no matter how seemingly miniscule affect the way in which someone watching the play connects with the title character.
In this scene we see two new characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, childhood friends of Hamlets. They have been sent by the king,Claudius, to help discover why Hamlet's behaviour has changed, and to find out whether he is actually mad.
Shakespearean revenge tragedy is most remarkable in Hamlet, where no happy ending occurs for any of the characters. External forces steer Hamlet’s internal considerations. The internal is what is going on in Hamlet’s mind, presumably what is right and what is just. The external are constant pressures coming in from an outside source. Equally, both forces contribute to the development of Hamlet’s character; from a melancholy man who could not make his mind up to a courageous and ready man. Moreover, leaves Hamlet on an emotional rollercoaster contemplating over and over in his mind the nature of his action. In what may be Shakespeare’s most remarkable soliloquy “To Be or Not to Be . . .” (3.1.1), Hamlet endeavors to contemplate the righteousness of life over death and his suicide. Hamlet’s first soliloquy takes place in Act 1 scene 2. In his first soliloquy Hamlet lets out all of his inner feelings revealing his true self for the first time. Hamlet’s true self is full of distaste, anger, revenge, and is very much different from the artificial persona that he pretends to be anytime else. Overall, Hamlet’s first soliloquy serves to highlight and reveal Hamlet’s melancholy as well as his reasons for feeling such anguish. This revelation in Hamlet’s persona lays the groundwork for establishing the many themes in the play--suicide, revenge, incest, madness, corruption, and mortality.
During the first act of William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet, Shakespeare uses metaphors, imagery, and allusion in Hamlet’s first soliloquy to express his internal thoughts on the corruption of the state and family. Hamlet’s internal ideas are significant to the tragedy as they are the driving and opposing forces for his avenging duties; in this case providing a driving cause for revenge, but also a second-thought due to moral issues.
The language he uses in lines 556- 566 even contemplates the person he is pretending to be, basically saying it is possible for him to force his own soul into believing the part he is playing so much so that all the powers of his body adapt themselves to suit his acting needs. Hamlet displays the duality of his nature through his words, therefore opening the same appearance versus reality conflict to the other characters and situations in the play. The harshness of Hamlet's language in the second soliloquy also helps unravel the conflict occurring in the entire play. Hamlet is undeniably committed to seeking revenge for his father, yet he cannot act on behalf of his father due to his revulsion toward extracting cold and calculating revenge. Such an issue causes Hamlet great internal struggle, as seen in his words.
When analyzing Shakespeare's Hamlet through the deconstructionist lens various elements of the play come into sharper focus. Hamlet's beliefs about himself and his crisis over indecision are expounded upon by the binary oppositions created in his soliloquies.
Ay, sure, this is most brave, / That I, the son of the dear murdered, / Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell, / Must, like a whore, unpack my heart with words / And fall a-cursing like very drab, / A scullion! Fie upon’t, foh! -About my brain” (2.2.585-590). Here Hamlet himself reveals that he has been thinking too much about needs to be done instead of acting on what should be done. In fact, Hamlet goes on to insult himself because of how appalled he is with his own actions of thinking, and speaking instead of just doing what needs to be done, and killing Claudius. It seems that Hamlet is also trying to convince himself that he needs to just do it however that fails once he starts questioning, and insulting himself because by allowing himself to question his behavior he has already gone back into his same way of thinking. Hamlet tries to break his nature here by pondering why he hasn’t done anything and cursing himself for not acting yet Hamlet fails his attempts as soon as he starts them because with this pondering if his own behavior Hamlet has already gone back into his thinking ways and was questioning why he was so much of a thinker. By trying to overcome his nature using his normal method Hamlet reveals that his true nature is to be a thinker because not even when he tries to convince himself to act another way can he break his analysis of the possibilities.
While the actual personality traits and each character’s motivations add more depth to Shakespeare’s overall belief, the language each character incorporates contributes more highly to the conviction – revenge causes one to act blindly in anger. By analyzing Hamlet’s use of language throughout the play, one can tell Hamlet is keen on avenging his father, but no heart or effort is put into the action. Speaking in disgust with himself, Hamlet says “That I, the son of a dear father murder'd, / Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell, / Must, like a whore, unpack my heart with words, “ (2.2.584-586). Hamlet has an enormous amount of stress placed on him by the events of his father’s death and his mother’s hasty marriage. Hamlet’s mentality is further stressed by his father’s appearance in the form of a ghost telling Hamlet the true cause of his death, “The serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears his crown” (Shakespeare 1.5.38-39), and more importantly telling Hamlet to avenge his death and to never forget him (1.5). This must weigh heavily on Hamlet’s mind as he tries to bring himself to carry out such a corrupt act. As Javed describes Hamlet’s ordeal as, “having taken on unwillingly the task of the revenge whose narrower function may have been to avenge a wronged kinsman, but whose wider one was to purge from society the evil which it could not otherwise escape” (332.) The corruption of Hamlet’s character is tragic because as Polonius says: “the safety and health of [the] whole state” depends on him (Shakespeare 1.3.20). The first drastic demonstration of Hamlet’s corruption is shown when he finds Polonius hiding behind a curtain . Hamlet, who believes his uncle Claudius is spying on him, stabs at the curtain, inadvertently killing Polonius. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the protagonist exhibits a puzzling, duplicitous nature. Hamlet contradicts himself throughout the play. He endorses both the virtues of acting a role and that of being true to one's self. He further supports both of these conflicting endorsements with his actions. This ambiguity is demonstrated by his alleged madness, for he does behave madly, only to become perfectly calm and rational an instant later. These inconsistencies are related with the internal dilemmas he faces. He struggles with the issue of revenging his father's death, vowing to kill Claudius and then backing out, several times. Upon this point Hamlet stammers through the play. The reason for this teetering is directly related to his inability to form a solid opinion about role playing. This difficulty is not present, however, at the start of the play.
