True Friendship: An Analysis of Hamlet and Horatio’s Relationship in Hamlet Throughout the highs and lows in the rollercoaster called life, it is essential to have a true friend to lean on and trust. In the play, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the author created an important relationship between a minor and major character, Horatio and Hamlet. Although Horatio was portrayed as a minor character, he played a significant role in the play and in Hamlet’s crazy life. Hamlet considered Horatio as family and a true and trusted friend. Horatio was the only loyal friend in Hamlet’s life, as everyone else around Hamlet believed he was crazy or out to kill him. Hamlet was poetic and full of philosophy as he gave many elaborate speeches. On the other hand, Horatio was quieter and a good listener to Hamlet’s speeches, as wild and strange as they may have been. Both men were intellectuals, but Horatio had a coolhead compared to Hamlet, which helped him guide the outlandish Prince of Denmark. While many of Hamlet’s acquaintances questioned his mental state, Horatio was the only one who believed the prince was not crazy and he was also the only insight readers have about what was going on in Hamlet’s mind.
Loyalty is a crucial quality to find in a good friend. Horatio’s loyalty allowed him to to understand what was going on in Hamlet’s mind and barely questioned the prince’s decisions. While everyone looked at Hamlet with confusion and believed his mental state was out of sorts, Horatio did not blink an eye towards Hamlet’s ludicrous language because he understood it was only an act. During the scene in which Hamlet wished to follow the ghost, Horatio was the only one who stopped him and warned him of all the possible bad outcomes if he followed. Horatio
