The World Health Organization defines Health promotion as “ the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health participants.” Contemporary health professionals such as nurse practitioners, nurses, and doctors inform and demonstrate ways on caring for the self. The contemporary view of health promotion is an individual driven prevention assisted by health care professionals. This new style of health promotion lets patients get involved with their health by adapting a lifestyle that changes the way they approach health prevention. In the historical view of head psychological problems were not counted as major factor contributing to patients illness, but contemporary health promotion is built on the foundations of psychological and emotional influence in one’s well-being. Therefore, health promotion should be seen as a teamwork process between health professionals and patients. Nurses should be educated and be able to converse with patients about their illness. Lastly, health promotion requires educating the public, and the ability to unselfishly get involved in patients well-being.

The health promotion is a key factor process of permitting people to increase control over their health status in order to improve it. It not only covers the actions directly aimed at increasing the skills and capabilities of individuals, but is also aimed at changing the social, environmental and economic issues that impact on healthy habits.
The discipline of nursing is generally recognized to integrate health, nursing, environment, and person as vital components of its foundation. Though health is the commonly accepted goal of the nursing discipline, its definition of health has shifted in meaning to one that is multidimensional. Health was once universally accepted to be defined as the absence of disease among many health professionals. Presently, this concept is now considered one of many due to increasing diversity in cultural and societal norms. The rise of health promotion as a universal plan of action to improve health of mankind has since transitioned from its traditional meaning to a new concept that includes biopsychosocial, spiritual, cultural, and environmental elements.
To start off, I am going to explain the Health Promotion definition. Health is one’s ability to function well physically, mentally, and socially in order to function within the environment in which they are living in (World Health Organization, 2016). Encouraging one’s control over their own health in relation to social and environmental interventions defines health promotion which leads to the optimization of health (World Health Organization, 2016). It is essential for older adults to partake in changing their lifestyle in terms of their behavior and applying the knowledge they receive from health care providers in order to promote health (World Health Organization, 2016). Older adults mostly have a hard time taking care of themselves and need the assistance to guide them for their well-being. Therefore, nurses have a vital role in providing information and teaching individuals how to gain healthy ideas to promote healthy behaviors. Health promotion is a crucial element in supporting an older adult living with a health challenge such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Health promotion is a multifaceted movement with a core value on respect, empowerment, equity, inclusion and social justice (MacDougall 2002). Aims to achieve holistic health, while it is influenced by medical and social determinants. These determinants which aids to deter...
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..

To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. Therefore, health promotion is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy life-styles to wellbeing. Health promotion goes beyond health care. It puts health on the agenda of policy makers in all sectors and at all levels. It directs policy makers to be aware of the health consequences of their decisions and accept their responsibilities for

During the 1980s, efforts increased to alert the public to the dangers of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended pregnancy, yet these problems have increased. Adolescents and young adults have been especially hard hit. Pregnancy and birth rates among teenagers are at their highest levels in two decades.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases or STDs are an increasing problem in today’s society. There are many of them and the number is increasing in the youth of the nation. According to a 2000 poll, 18.9 million cases were reported, and of that number, 9.1 million occurred in people between the ages of 15 to 24. America needs to recognize this problem more fully and find a cure for it. Abstinence is one way to help, but what people need to realize is that it is not working.
Today it is no longer a novelty to hear that teenagers are having sex. However, while this “bedroom” activity may be fun, there are now ample reports indicating that rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in teenagers have skyrocketed. Current data reveal that nearly 25% of adolescent girls who have sex are infected with one of the four commonly sexually transmitted infections-namely gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes and HIV (Kann et al, 2015). Nationally, the prevalence of STDs account for 50% of cases in people under the age of 25. While every ethnic and race has been known to be affected, African American youth are disproportionately affected. These data are not a surprise to professionals who are engaged in adolescent sexual health because the numbers have been slowly creeping up over the decades, despite national educational policies to counter the threat of STDs (Sales & DiClemente, 2016). All the STDs have a significant impact on sexual and reproductive health, if they are mot promptly diagnosed and treated. Although many preventive strategies have been implemented in all communities, the rates of STDs are still increasing (Madkour et al, 2016).
Health promotion is the process of improving health status of a person and prevention of disease by enabling the person to take control of their health. It is not just the absence of disease (Maben, & Clark, 1995). Health promotion is commonly used term in health care world, and in current society the promotion of health has greater significance, especially with the rise in consumerism. Health promotion is a vital concept for nursing, symbolizing notions that nursing is related today. Nurses are being urged to take a health promotion role, and are deemed by others as an ideal role for them. It is therefore crucial that nurses cognize the meaning of health promotion and also what is expected from them by undertaking this
Health promotion improves the quality of life that individuals have and it also helps to be able to expand a healthy lifestyle. Health educators can range from teachers in schools to government agencies that aid in educating individuals and communities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health promotion enables people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. The WHO states that health promotion moves beyond the focus of individual behavior to social and environmental interventions. In my opinion, I believe that Para-professionals should also be qualified to be health educators.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) (2013), research has shown that many young people between the ages of 13-29 are not concerned about becoming infected with HIV/AIDS and many of them do not know their HIV status. The CDC (2013) found that 39% of all new HIV infections affected young people between the ages of 13-29. Contraceptive Technology Update (2013) found that studies have shown that the greater the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) contracted during the teenaged years, the greater the risk of acquiring HIV. Due to the increasing numbers of HIV infections among young people within this age group, more HIV education and screening should be implemented in the inner city of Houston, TX. An HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention Program in this city would be targeted to young people between the ages of 13-29. The three main goals of this program would be health promotion and reduction of illness by educating our youth on HIV/AIDS; secondly, attracting and screening approximately 10,000 young people in the city of Houston for HIV/AIDS, and thirdly, making referrals for treatment to those who are found to be HIV positive. According to Blais and Hayes (2011), “nurses practice health promotion through education of clients and their families and through community education programs” (p.119). Bradley-Springer, Stevens and Webb (2010), found that educating young people about HIV/AIDS, testing, transmission, and prevention should be considered an important component of young adults’ health care. By screening our youth through this program, early detection of HIV/AIDS would allow early treatment of the disease.
