There are numerous challenges faced by today’s youth. Teenagers encounter many obstacles and choices as they become adults. There are things they agree with, disagree with, think that should be different, or wish to remain the same. A controversial topic in the United States today is whether the age limitation for buying firearms should be changed.
At what age are people mature enough to own a firearm? The state laws controlling the purchase of firearms are varied and constantly changing. Each state has some form of restriction on purchasing guns, though rural states tend to be less restrictive in controlling guns than highly urban states due to the greater numbers of hunters and sportsmen in their populations (Gun Control). The minimum buying age for long guns and most handguns in the majority of the states in this country is 18 (Kozak).
In North Dakota specifically, children age 12 are eligible to attend hunter safety courses and use rifles to hunt antlerless white-tailed deer with the supervision of a mentor. Children age 14 and 15 can purchase a youth deer license to hunt any type of deer with the supervision of a mentor. According to recent gallup poll, the percentage of Americans who want gun laws to remain the same or become less strict is higher than that of those who favor stricter gun laws (Chalfant). At age 18, people are claimed adults. Shouldn’t they be allowed to own a gun if they can volunteer to serve, and possibly die for the United States? The correct answer is yes. By raising the minimum age law it would take away citizen’s rights. It violates the Constitution's second amendment, which is the right to bear arms (Kozak). Also, by not setting a limit children would be found wandering the streets with guns and accidentally shooting things because they didn’t know any
