Due to ongoing school safety issues around the country, there has been considerable amount of debate over precautions needed to keep students and staff safe during the academic day. While others question gun control laws or FBI involvement, others call for mental health reform for school safeguards. With more than three school shootings in the last decade, it is safe to say that to keep a zero tolerance of shooting, there must be more effective school safety measures throughout schools in America. Placing gun laws is important, having a school phycologist is also essential to help aid the school system. However, it could take many years until a law is passed and it can be a financial problem for the County to place a phycologist in each school. …show more content…

In observing the impact of Columbine High School and Sandy Hooks Elementary shooting, one would believe that all schools would secure their safety measures so that a tragedy like that would never happen again. However, certain schools did not take the initiative. In early February, there was a mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas Highschool in Florida. The shooting killed up to 17 students and staff at the high school. From this recent news, millions of citizens in America have responded to the recent escapade and have protested for gun laws and better school safety. In the article “Trump Supports Improving Background Checks”, the author, Arnie Seipel states, “he supports efforts to improve the federal background check system, something Congress has expressed broad support for without acting on after past shootings”. This quote goes further to show that we must not rely on our own government for change. Yes, the idea for having background checks to all customers who purchase a gun, would make things easier on schools and communities. However, the government has yet to take action, so in the meantime schools must do what they can to better protect their students and
