Step 1: How do we ensure the safety of the students while at school? Before the 1990’s, there was not as much worry about students having a gun used for hunting in their vehicle on school property. It wasn’t uncommon for a student to have one, since they hunted before school. This tolerance drastically changed as a result of the mass school shootings that have occurred in the recent past. The Gun Free-Schools Act of 1994 mandates students who bring a gun to school will be expelled for at least one year (Dunn, 2002). School districts soon adopted policies to follow this act. School safety has been a concern for not only family members, but school officials across the nation. Two ways districts have been actively keeping students safe are having …show more content…
Teachers may be able to protect more students when law enforcement may not be able to respond for 25 minutes (Shah, 2013). Teachers would have the ability to assess the situation and act within seconds or minutes versus waiting. Another advantage to arming teachers is teachers are familiar with their school building. Teachers know where students congregate and where they try to hide. Would the local law enforcement be able to find the locations as quickly as the teachers questions Sanfransky (2014). Following the known evacuation procedures, the armed teachers would be able to quickly clear the areas assigned to them and protect the students in the process. Weiler & Armenta (2014) conducted a survey of principals collecting data on arming school personnel. One question was to list advantages of arming teachers. It was noted the knowledge of teachers being armed may be a deterrent. An intruder may be bolder in his moves and actions thinking only the people who will be armed are the law enforcement officers. However, when the knowledge that teachers are armed is widely known, the would-be shooter may not act upon his plan knowing return fire will be …show more content…
School Resource Officers have been trained specifically to protect people with no other thoughts interfering with this. Teachers’ main thought is to teach, not to protect. The collegiate teacher programs do not include classes on being armed and defending the students. The training school personnel may receive to be able to be armed may not be adequate in a situation that requires an instant decision to shoot or not to shoot. Another disadvantage of arming teachers is children always seem to find a way to get their hands on everything (Corbett, 2013). Typically, the person carrying a weapon must keep it on their body at all times. Accidents can happen though. The gun may be exposed or dislodged when a teacher breaks up a fight. If a student is able to grab the gun, a fist fight has now turned
Arming teachers is deranged. Many teachers or potential teachers may shy away from their dreams or future plans of being a teacher with forcing him/her to carry guns and police student’s.
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
In this article Emmett Tyrell informs us about gun violence in schools and what the NRA has proposed to stop the gun violence, and mass shootings across America. While the gun control debate rages, many schools have become war zones, and all school zones are vulnerable. The National Rifle Association's has come up with a 225-page report contains dozens of recommendations to improve safety in our nation’s schools. The NRA’s National School Shield program will train and enable school personnel to carry firearms to protect our nation’s children.
Another reason teachers should not be able to carry guns is because it would be very hazardous; Kids would feel unsafe with guns easily accessible. Having a gun in the classroom would create tension and make it to focus. If teachers accepted firearms then a child could get their hands on it. According to Corbett from Slate magazine, “If a gun finds its way into a teacher’s desk, briefcase, or purse. A child will get his hand on it.” If the gun was easil...
Public policies are developed in response to the existence of a perceived problem or an opportunity. The analysis delves into a public issue or problem and assesses a set of proposed government action for addressing the issue. The job of the analyst is to describe the background and status of an issue and then, using research and analysis, determine a proper government action to resolve the issue. By comparing options and weighing their expected benefits, the analyst should conclude with a recommended course of action or inaction to addressing the issue.
... As a high school student, I don’t take much stock in the safety codes and drills in place to keep students safe in the event of a shooting. I would feel much safer knowing my teacher has the ability to protect the class, rather than hide and lock the door. An educator is responsible for the students in their class. They are responsible for their education and safety while the children are in their classroom.
Throughout the years of education, kids go to school to get an education, to hang with friends, to get excise, and many other things. America should have armed officers in in public schools. Since kids are spending a majority of their time throughout the day and year at school, they should feel safe in that environment. That can soon change with school security falling behind with this current growth of school shooting. Schools shootings have begun occurring more often in the United States from elementary schools all the way up to colleges. How should school systems fix this problem? One solution that could be the most effective is having multiple armed officers in schools. Let’s begin with some major school shootings that were lacking armed officers, when the resource officer successfully stopped a potential shooting, and reasons why we should have an armed officer.
In “Vulnerable Schools Need Protection: Guns, Training For Teachers may be the answer”, published in a 2008 edition of the Chicago Tribune, David McGrath argues that some teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon for protection. First, McGrath states that if a random psychotic gunman were searching for someplace to attack, his classroom would make an easy target. He feels that if he was trained and armed, his class would not be trapped without a chance of survival because he would be able to defend against the gunman. Sec...
School shootings are still happening and we have to put a stop to it. We need to have these teachers prepared and ready to fight. Students to deserve to have their lives out to rest knowing something could have been done that’s why we need to have these teachers armed. This is a cold world if someone enters a school with a weapon teachers need to have their weapon ready too for the sack of their children. A school is a fun place to learn but to also keep safe. This is why teachers should be armed.
Although most security measures passively make schools safer, it is not nearly enough to prevent an individual who intends on creating mass violence from completing his or her task. State representatives, national organizations, school staff, and parents need to come together to figure out the most reliable ways to prevent an active shooter situation from occurring in their schools. One solution that has been active is many schools have partnered with local law enforcement agencies to provide a police officers to patrol school grounds....
Teachers play a very important role in our kid’s lives on a daily basis. Not only are they there as educators, but they are also there as protectors as well, especially for our younger students. They are not only there to watch over them and make sure that they get home safely, but they are there to protect them from any harm, including a gunman. If a gunman were to enter the school and some if not all of the teachers were licensed to carry, he could be stopped before harming or even killing several people, including our children.
The schools had also brought in school officers to have on school grounding during school hours. They feel that they need these type of secured to have their children protected. Parents feel a little say knowing that there is a police in school patrolling. In several school they have started to do searches to make sure no one is bring anything dangerous that could harm a person. This is super important to makes sure no weapons are on school grounds. Schools have also put on their policy that if any weapon is found on the person’s possession there could be serious
“Since 2013, there have been over 200 school shootings in America, an average of nearly one a week”(Everytown Research). How safe is our family members at school? Allowing teachers and staff to carry guns could lower that number. Some people may disagree with it, saying that it would be teaching students violence. School shootings would be a thing of the past if staff were armed.
This sounds dangerous, having guns in schools, but it actually provides more security. Most SRO’s have guns, which they are trained to use. Kenneth S. Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services, says, “School districts considering arming teachers and school staff with guns would take on significant responsibility and potential liabilities that I firmly believe are beyond the expertise, knowledge-base, experience, and professional capabilities of most school boards and administrators” (Arming Teachers and School Staff- School Security”). Trump does not believe that teachers should be allowed to arm guns inside the school because of a liability issue. Nonetheless, most houses have guns in them, but when they are put up in a safe, or somewhere children cannot get to, the house is still a safe place. Therefore, if the school did allow the teachers to obtain a gun somewhere in the classroom, intruders would be less likely to show up because they know it is the whole school against the single, or few intruders. Teachers will only be allowed to be armed at school if they have a concealed weapons permit, CWP, and are thoroughly trained on how to use a gun. Teachers will be required to go through a drill once a month on how they should hand the situation if an intruder were to come into the building, as well as how they should handle a gun and when they should use the gun.
