The instrument we chose to do our project on is a percussion instrument. This percussion instrument is called the guiro. The guiro is used as a counterpoint in folk music. It is less commonly used in salsa bands. The guiro is usually accompanied by dancers. The calabazo, the guayo, the ralladura, and the rascador are all other names that are used to call the guiro. The guiro contains two pieces. The first piece is the main part known as the guiro. The second piece is the scraper. The scraper is also known as the pua. The pua is held in your left hand. The pua scrapes up and down the sides of the guiro on the horizontal parallel lines. This motion makes a recurring rhythmic rasping sound. The guiro is held in your right hand. Your thumb is
Francisco Pizarro was a famous Spanish explorer. On September 13, 1524, Francisco Pizarro set sail from Panama to a conquest of Peru. He brought about eighty men and forty horses with him. In 1528, Pizarro went back to Spain managed to obtain in a group of people from Emperor Charles V. Francisco Pizarro was known for capturing the Inca Emperor, Emperor Atahualpa, in 1532. In 1533, Pizarro conquered Peru.
Bachata is a creolized music, meaning that there is both European and African influence. It is also a descendent of a few different Dominican Republic and Cuban forms of music – primarily son, but also merengue and ranchera. Son is music of the African diaspora, commonly involved in debates of African retention. Elements of African music, such as call-and-response and preference for polyrhythm survived the middle passage and are deeply rooted in Caribbean tradition. Stringed instruments are believed to have been part of the European influence on the area, as well as harmonic patterns, as well as verse-chorus structure and prominent duple meter. Modern groups consist of two electric acoustic guitars, an electric bass guitar, a guira (A Dominican Republic percussion instrument), and bongos (Hutchinson). In a complete Mariachi group today there are as many as 6 to 8 violins, 2 trumpets, and a guitar, which are all standard European instruments. Then there is a high-itched, round-backed guitar called the vihuela, which when strummed in the traditional manner gives the mariachi its typical rhythmic vitality; a deep voiced guitar called the guitarr'o which serves as the bass of the ensemble; and a Mexican folk harp, which usually doubles the base line, but also ornaments the melody.

Music comes in many shapes and forms, and has been a magical element of inspiration and encouragement throughout time. The art of music derives from many different things, such as culture and traditions. One such type of music is mariachi music, deriving from Mexican culture and traditions. Mariachi music is often an upbeat rhythm, consisting of a band of up to six to eight violins, two trumpets and a guitar. Unlike modern music and other music bands alike, mariachi bands lack in numbers when it comes to band size. Though they are small, their music brings great significance and life to the places they perform and the people that they touch with their joyous music. In this paper, I will be comparing the culture and style of mariachi music to twentieth century modern music.

To better understand why samba represents the Brazilian’s national identity, one has to understand the history of Brazil and samba. Samba can be heard all throughout Brazil. It is a musical genre complemented by song and dance that includes a group of percussion instruments and guitar. The puxador (lead singer) starts the samba, occasionally singing the same song for hours at a time. The obligation of maintaining thousands of voices in time with the drum rests on his shoulders. Bit by bit, the other members of the escola (samba group) come in, and with a whistle from the mestre de bateria (percussion conductor) - the most exciting moment of the parade occurs as the percussion section crashes in. The surdos (bass drums) keep the 2 / 4 meter, while caixas (snare drums) and tamborins accent the second beat. This percussion ensemble, speak of as the 'bateria', frequently includes instruments such as the agogo (double bell) and reco-reco (scraper), as well as the prato, repique, pandeiro, tamborim, and ganzathe. The only stringed instrument is the great pitched cavaquinho (ukulele). ...ng students establish good, fundamental, subdivided rhythmic pulse. This being said, this book should not be completely taken out of the equation when choosing a method book for your classroom. The lessons involving improvisation and composition are very valuable and could be easily extracted from the text and used with a different method book. In addition, this book’s adept teaching of beginning percussion is desirable, and some aspects of the percussion lessons would be very useful for beginning band students. With these benefits as well as drawbacks in mind, one could choose to teach with this book and do it effectively, given that he/she devised a logical sequence of the exercises and information available in the beginning of the book, which may or may not require supplementary materials such as providing correct harmonies to exercises teaching the first notes.
Throughout the semester, various styles of music and the aspects of culture associated with these styles have been analyzed. Musical elements such as dynamics, texture, form, timbre, melody, instruments, etc., have been used to thoroughly explore each kind of music from different areas of the world, with an emphasis in music from Africa, India and Indonesia. These aspects of music go far beyond just music itself. Culture also plays a huge role in music and the accompanying musical elements. Each country and culture has a different style and distinctiveness that add to what makes the music of that certain culture unique. Music in Africa may differ dramatically from music in Indonesia or India not only due to those certain elements but also due to how it is interpreted by people and what it represents for those people. In addition to this, what one may consider music in one culture may not be music to another. These differences have been made apparent in the several demonstrations that we have been exposed to in class.

The piece accompanying this paper is called Indita del rio grande. It is part of the indita genre of Spanish New Mexican music and is performed by the singer Edwin Berry. It was made in Tomé, New Mexico in 1971. Although many Spanish New Mexicans have historically wanted to suppress the mixings of Indians with Spaniards, this history is perceivable in the indita genre. Thus, it is closely associated with the interwoven, mestizo culture of New Mexico (Romero 2002:56). The songs often feature a juxtaposition of Spanish words with indigenous rhythmic motifs which signifies this relationship (Romero 2002:65). Additionally, the refrain of an indita sometimes contain vocables (syllables that don’t have a meaning in the language)
According to his review of A Guide to Latin American Music by Gilbert Chase, Charles Seeger describes Chase’s description of the music culture, “The quantitative distribution of more than 2700 entries, which include some multiple listing, is interesting” (Seeger, 1946, 304). Chase explains a plethora of countries in Latin America and their specific musical features. Furthermore, thanks to his detailed work, the reader can see how many common features can be seen. Firstly, a common feature among all genres is the use of aerophones. The aerophones used could include, panpipes of various varieties, flutes, trumpets (as seen at the Boogat performance in Ottawa) and many more. Another common feature among all the genres is a strong rhythmic presence. In essentially all Latin American music, a steady, metrical rhythmic quality can be heard keeping the music energetic and easy to follow. To keep the rhythm, another common feature to Latin American culture is the drum. Most commonly found in the Afro-Latin genre, as a result of influence from African culture, can be seen throughout Latin America. A popularized western form of this type of music, is that of mariachi. Finally, Latin American culture is known for its vibrancy in their music.
