Growth mindset is the ideal mindset for the growth of a student (Robinson, 2017). Having a growth mindset has been shown to help students improve their intelligence and therefore become more successful (Robinson, 2017). One of the key factors to help motivate a growth mindset in students is communication. There are two folds to the communication – communication between the professor and the student, and communication of student with himself (Robinson, 2017). Exercising both forms of communication in a balanced nature will help develop the growth mindset of the student and therefore give positive results (Robinson, 2017). It is a work of art, it’s all about the mind and its power of imagination. To be able to be fully satisfied with their writing, one has to have a clear head. If one is to succeed in writing classes at CMU, one has to be adaptive to learning new skills which will help him improve his craft (Robinson, 2017). To be open to new things means, one needs to have a growth mindset. Though there are quite a lot of ways through which one can develop their growth mindsets, one of the key ways to do the same is through communication. By doing this with ones self or others, communication plays a major role in procuring a growth mindset (Robinson, 2017). Re-framing language when communicating expectations and feedback is a definite way to set higher expectations for learning (Tourville & Sprunger 2013). Re-framing language is a part of effective communication. Rephrasing sentences and the tones of a voice can change a person’s ability to perceive data and improves learning. Effective communication has been shown to be an important part of the leaning process (Robinson, 2017). Self-doubt and fear of failure is inevitable (Robinson, 2017). Thoughts like ‘I am not good enough’ or ‘This is too hard. I give up’ will create a negative mindset in the student (Robinson, 2017). This will result in a fixed mindset, where the student will not see any scope of improvement (Robinson, 2017). This will affect his productivity and therefore result in a mediocre writing (Robinson, 2017). The professor should help the student adapt a more positive look towards himself and his writing. For example, instead of saying ‘I can’t do this,’ the professor can help the student find a more positive approach by thinking, ‘Is there someone who can help me out?’ Instead of thinking ‘I am not good enough,’ the student can think, ‘In what ways can I improve my skills and become good?’ Mistakes are bound to happen and obstacles will always be there as a roadblock but the professor can teach students how to use positive self-talk, and help themselves develop the skills and confidence they require to write their work
In Donald M. Murrays’s essay “What is Practical Education” he explains his reasoning behind why he allowed his students to write badly. He shares his own experience with police-like teachers who drove him to hate writing. In hopes of helping his students find their voice he allows his students to write the words down as they come, no matter how awkward they sound. Often times they find out that they have more to say then they thought. Rhetorical devices are used to help the readers relate to his point of view on writing.
What does it mean to be a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset? In the book Mindset – The New Psychology of Success author Carol Dweck breaks down the meanings of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when a person sees their failures as being an unsuccessful person. These fixed mindsets do not aim to challenge themselves due to the possibility of not succeeding or being seen dumb. They are discouraged by failing and hold back in life. Carol Dweck describes this has unhappiness. A growth mindset is a person who welcomes failures and takes these failures as a challenge to grow from their mistakes. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. A growth mindset is the belief that you can learn anything you want without a limit. You will not give up and face any challenge in life until you overcome it. A fixed mindset is the belief that you can learn till you reach a certain point. Also, that you will not succeed in life and as soon as you come across a tough challenge you will let it bring you down and won’t ever get back up or face that challenge. I am willing to learn and try new things, even if it includes struggling. As of how I can use my growth mindset in this class can start off with willing to learn new types of outlines or learning to extend my vocabulary and writing.
