When working on a group project there are certain skills that are required to make sure that the tasks are being carried out smoothly. With that in mind, it is critical to keep an open line of communication along with a certain level of understanding of the other individuals in the group. The following scenario is of a group project I was a part of that had a breakdown in the two points expressed above. A week before the project deadline, the project leader was under the impression that one of our members had not completed a specific task in the allotted time agreed upon during a group conversation carried out on our online group chat at the beginning of the project. As a result, the project leader personally confronted the member and began …show more content…
This was seen by the use of technology as the leader tried to make communication between the group better. While it was a good idea to use technology to keep a continuous line of communication, it was not supposed to be used as the only line of communication. This is because face-to-face communication is necessary to provide a direct interpretation of what is being said along with immediate clarification of misunderstanding. With that in mind, the use of group messaging should be used as a supplementary form of communication for the smaller tasks associated with a project. The second issue that was faced in this situation was the way the team leader dealt with the setback in the project. Regardless of the situation, an individual should not introduce hostility into a working relationship. In this case, the team leader’s inability to assess the situation and jumping to conclusion led to the team member feeling disrespected and less willing to work with the team leader. This situation just highlights the concept of reducing communication barriers as they can build up and cause unneeded tension directly and
It was a very bad situation that we could never pull ourselves out of. Unfortunately we didn’t have anybody like Kathryn Peterson from Decision Tech to help change the team’s overall behavior. We didn’t communicate with each other effectively, or fully trusted each other. Some of the team didn’t hold other members accountable for their actions. Other members didn’t show vulnerability but they did display anger during meetings. Several of the team members only looked out for self. They didn’t want to work on committees because they wanted to complete tasks their way and not by committee decision. We displayed each level of the five dysfunctions. Needless to say the company eventually make several changes to this particular
One of the main issues impeding the efficiency and preventing successful teamwork in this situation was uncertainty with the structural design of this project team. I was more familiar (and comfortable) with a rigid chain of command structure. My belief that we should be precisely executing the stated orders of our Navy leadership created obstacles for the other team members. Other more academically inclined team members were less oriented toward this centralized structure and therefore did not comprehend my opposition to their content ideas.
...ure that their team stays motivated, and to be aware of the emotions of the individuals within the team. This, along with proper communication will allow the leader to address any questions or resolve any conflicts that may arise. Questions and conflicts are inevitable within any team. Although, conflicts and questions during the process of the project can become beneficial to the overall success of the team. The team can learn how to better communicate as well as how to ask better questions, ensuring future conflicts will stay to a minimum (module 5 lecture pages, n.d.).
1. How might different aspects of teams and teamwork contribute to team members thinking about quitting their jobs?
This paper will establish the group contract of the family group and for fostering group cohesion, and shaping norms within the family group. This paper will discuss specific behaviors to be changed by group members, activities the family can engage in the family group that are fun, and specific ways the family can demonstrate love and belonging to each other. In addition, other information to be discussed is Choice Therapy and Reality Therapy and how they may apply to the group and this will be discussed in the week three videos. Furthermore, when looking at the group Guy needs to work on self-esteem issues, Beatrice needs to learn to be assertive and Katherine (Kat) needs to learn to deal with her emotions.
The first chapter of “Working in Groups” focuses on group communication, the first aspect being the key elements of group communication (Engleberg and
There were many issues that have interested me a lot and that I would like to study in more detail is that as a human we all make mistakes and we sometimes don’t listen to what the other person is trying to say which can be a cause of many inadvertent problems, therefore, we should always remember that when we are working as a team, it should not matter how well trained, motivated or professional we are if there is human involved then errors are inevitable. We can improve the situations and resolve issues by utilizing team skills and interpersonal skills such as make eye contact with team members, try to use names, explain the procedure, explain risk factors, make sure protocols and ask questions to check understanding. Because of communication barriers, team members sometimes make false assumption and misconceptions. There was a term used by Dr. Cohen in his lecture that has interested me a lot called “turfs/Silos” which means the barriers between members because of competition, it can be life-threatening for the
Successful health care organizations succeed because their leaders are able to identify technical and adaptive challenges, and then strategically adapt to these challenges. Health care organizations who fail miserably, fail because their leaders do not have the ability to adapt as well as notice the heat temperature boiling in their organization. The harder they push the harder they fall. The health care organization and health care system that most exemplify this failure is Care Group health system and its joint hospitals BID (Beth Israel & Deaconess Hospitals). Beth Israel Hospital (BI) and Deaconess Hospital both started as profitable hospitals; each having their own culture and own business models.
As a group, we had many ups and downs. Through many past experiences, working with people can be strenuous and draining, and this time was no different. With the deadline making its approach, time outside of our busy days had to be improvised to enhance and build on the script. Together, we promised to get online and work through the script together, but people would get on too late when the work was near done. At times, people would get distracted, leaving work unfinished. As a result, other members did more work than they were initially supposed to do. In addition, a member did not have internet, so it increased the difficulty to work as a team. When a member isn’t present, I am unable to guarantee that their work would get done. In general, no arguing transpired, but it felt like we were on pins and needles when new tasks had to be fulfilled. Besides the script, wardrobe and memorization had to be dwelled upon as they played just as an important role to immerge us into character. Despite numerous attempts to conquer wardrobe, it was unclear what we wanted to dress up as. This added up to my built-up stress, and it seemed like the deadline inched closer and
All three group members were present in the library to work on the presentation together and rehearse before the presentation. At the time of the conflict. I was confused as to why the group member who didn't agree with the final product and the direction in which the presentation went did not voice her opinions or disagreements. I was worried that we were so disorganized at a time when we should be ready for the presentation. Fortunately for all group members we did read our notes and do our research on dementia care in relation to wandering, elopement, rummaging and hoarding and we did understand that wandering and elopement was a big concern for dementia patients and was a big safety concern, because we had this knowledge damage control was possible and we stayed focused on our presentation and collaborated as a group in the little time we had left. Other team members seemed to be emotional and tearful and I believe this was because they were worried at this point we wouldn't be able to present the material as a
My experience with working with a group is that the longer you work together, it feels like the people I work with becomes a family. Sometimes we argue; sometimes we pick each other up when things are tough, but we also work together when things need to be accomplished. Getting a new job is always an adventure; normally, I walk through the door on the first day with fresh eyes and a fresh mind. That is exactly how I entered my first day at CVS Pharmacy (later to be known as CVS Health). Because this was my first retail job, it already seemed better than my experiences with the food and beverage industry. For about four years, I had been in and out of the restaurant business and believed that there had to be something a little more relaxed. Obviously, what I was doing was not my calling, which is why I applied to CVS. It had opportunity for advancement and a relaxed atmosphere. A friends’ wife that works for this particular CVS and helped me get my foot in the door. Walking through the double automatic doors, I could see the cashier, who I would later know as Alyssa, smiling at a customer. My “new” manager approached me with a genuine smile. Just the positive atmosphere and environment set the tone of how it would be working here.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. We were able to learn different types of concept in the textbook and utilized it as a team to complete certain tasks. The three concepts that impacted my team and I are human
Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. Teamwork plays a crucial role in implementing and fulfilling a common goal in a team project. Each member plays a role and takes on different responsibilities combined together. In different stages of teamwork, conflicts and arguments may occur for as members have different standpoints which need to be harmonized within the team. The key to having an effective teamwork is to explore each member's unique abilities to motivate them.
Imagine being assigned a group assignment. As you and your group begin to work, you realize that there are many complications that make it difficult for your group to create an exemplary project. You try all you can to keep the project afloat, but when your grades come back, you get a C. This grade will drag down your final grade for the quarter. Teachers should assign less group projects because uncooperative members can negatively affect the remaining group members; it limits the creativity of individual students, and keeps students from experiencing the full lesson of the project.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
