Have you ever wondered why you are so, or not so, successful? There is in fact one trait that could be the deciding factor in your success, Grit. Don’t just take my word for it psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth states, "...One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. It wasn't social intelligence, it wasn't good looks, physical health, and it wasn't IQ: It was grit. Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in and day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years; and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint". This quote explains grit wonderfully, to me grit …show more content…
means pushing yourself to defy the expectations of others around you who put you down, and say that you can’t do something. Grit is one of if not the most important qualities for someone to have, grit is can be found in me, the arts, and the world. Grit can be explained in many ways, an easy first example of grit can be found in my life.
In sixth grade I was on vacation a lot, my great grandpa was going senile and I saw him for, most likely, the last time that year. While I was on these vacations I missed a ton of school work. I actually missed an entire topic of math. This subject appeared on the Mid-term and was worth 15% of my grade. I received an 85, that category being the only part wrong, and I was placed in a lower math level then both my teacher and I believe I deserved. The school was not willing to admit that their placement system was flawed so they forced me to go to the lower level math class, much to my and my family's annoyance. I have worked very hard for three years to get back to that level, if I am able to keep my grades up until May then I will be moved back up. This shows an immense amount of grit because I refused to give up once I was told that I wouldn’t be able to do it. Grit is not only seen in my world but in the world of …show more content…
art. Secondly, Rocky Balboa from the classic Rocky movies is a perfect example of grit from the world of art.
In each Rocky movie Rocky faces a seemingly impossible challenge, in which he puts in a tremendous amount of work to accomplish. In the first movie Rocky is a low level fighter allowed to fight the boxing champ Apollo, because his opponent had to drop out of the match. Rocky spends the majority of the movie training for this fight. Once the big day comes Rocky goes fifteen rounds even when his coach insists that he stay down and quit the fight. Also, in Rocky II Rocky goes blind in one eye, forcing him to change his boxing style completely. He still trains as hard as ever and this time he manages to beat Apollo. In Rocky IV Rocky has to move to Russia to fight someone who killed his best friend, punches more than twice as hard as normal fighters, and uses steroids. However, Rocky still manages to persevere due to his incredible amount of grit. Grit can also be found in the real world not just in
movies. Lastly, in the real world Lionel Messi showed a monumental amount of grit when he attempted to make it to a professional level of soccer. As a kid Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. This meant that Messi would not grow as well as a normal kid. Messi would not be able to play in the pros if he did not grow. At age thirteen Messi was signed to Barcelona, he threw his life away, where he was given treatment so long as he played for the team. For three years he waited, until he took the field for the first time at the age of sixteen. Since that special day he has broken a multitude of records, and is considered the best soccer player in the world by many. People who do not contain grit in them usually don’t go far, even those with talent. A quote by Stephen King explains this magnificently, he says, “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work”. Firstly, I use grit in my life. Also, Rocky uses grit in his life. Finally, Messi uses grit in his life. Will you use it in yours?
There are two types of people in this world. There are people like students who work diligently to achieve the highest grade possible, athletes who put in hours and hours of practice so they can make the starting team, young adults who climb the ladder to get to the top of their company, and many others doing whatever it takes to make their dreams and goals become a reality. There are also people in this world who do the bare minimum in order to graduate with a passing grade or to make a paycheck that is possible to live on. They are doing only “just enough” to make it another day. What is the difference between the two? Standardized tests, natural talent, and IQ rankings have been used in the past to determine how successful a person will be, but a new trait has come into play that ultimately determines how much a person achieves during their lifetime. Grit is the most important trait a person
The importance of self control and grit in life's success is interlinked with talent, the relatively new research delves into the influence of self-control and grit in childhood and adulthood life stages. Grit and self control measures in childhood and adulthood may both predict and explain the differing levels of success in individuals with similar talent. Grit and self control are influential to success, important in both childhood and adulthood, right throughout an individuals life. Grit and success should therefor be focused on as a skill to improve when pursuing a goal, both short and long
“Over time, grit is what separates fruitful lives from aimlessness.”-John Ortberg this is a great quote that shows how grit is necessary in being successful in life. Grit is key to getting want you want and achieving dreams.
It starts with Courage which is describes as the ability of doing something that scare you everyday. The article states that they should stop being coddling and has to faced their failure so that they can learn from it and stand up so that they can go forward. The next point is the conscientiousness which is the main key because it is the ability of taking responsible and the conscience of doing what's right and importance. With conscientiousness in the human being character is describes as the big five such as being an open minded, agree with what is right, be conscience and make right decisions to achieve the work needed. Long term goals and endurance will bring you to your goals because it's the base of your work. Without it we can not make it to the end game. The more you have resilience and Optimism , the more you work harder. Your objectif, your surrounding your positives and negatives aspects of life give you Grit. It helps you to understand better what placed those. The role Grit play in your life and in our world of today. Just like it says in the article “ Optimism+confidence+creativity= Resilience =Hardiness=(+/-) Grit. The last point not the least, excellence vs perfection’ first of all nobody is perfect but as human we try to work hard so that we can make it to Excellency which guide us to the endgame. But a grittiest person is someone who doesn’t look for excellency only but work hard to meet perfection just like in a soccer game or an athletics sport. As an example, in a soccer team, there is always one soccer player that everyone love and want his team to win, so to do so all the team need to have Grit and be more gritteir than the other team to win.In addition, the article of Margaret Perlis and professor Duckworth about Grit can be benefit to college students because it can help them to make better decisions, to be able to have an object and to be grittier about what they want. They
First, grit means that a person can set a goal and put forth every effort necessary in order to achieve that goal. In the essay Jonah quotes, “Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration,” this quotes from Edison is saying that genius is much more hard work then natural talent. Grit is definitely a factor in success and hard work is a part of having grit.
Merriam Webster says grit is defined as unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger. Angela Lee Duckworth’s opinion about grit being the key to success is true and correct. Her points about the kids that didn’t have the highest IQ but were the grittiest and were the most successful in the class showed that grit has to do with success. Another point that she makes is that talent doesn’t make you gritty. Just because someone has more talent than another person doesn’t mean that he or she is better.
How would it feel to be able to achieve anything that you ever dreamed of? This is possible with the right mindset and an extremely hard working attitude. The keys to this is holding a growth mindset, which aids you in embracing challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as the path to mastery, learn from criticism, and find lessons and inspiration. Another crucial element for success is grit and what that short word basically determines is your strength of character. Having a growth mindset and using grit can help you achieve whatever goals that’s being attempted.
I’ve pushed myself to pursue rigorous classes throughout high school. Though I didn’t make the grade I always wanted, I never lost hope and ensured that I gave my best effort and tried my hardest at all times. This hard work has paid off tremendously. I was able to complete my dyslexia curriculum by 8th grade. I was accepted into a magnet center for high school, which is one of the best in the state and is ranked well in the nation among high schools. I believe that my life, my education, my learning disability, and etc are all subject to my belief that my mindset is greater than my circumstances, and working hard paid off greatly. My situation as a dyslexic has taught me to pride myself in my ability to overcome any

When I was a young girl, my older brother always did very well in school and he and the rest of our family were always very proud of his work. As I grew older and noticed all of my brother’s achievements I decided that I wanted to not only achieve what he had, but to also achieve things that he had not. Because of this strive to reach and surpass the standards that my brother had set, I developed into a person with great determination. Throughout my life I have always set goals for myself and then did everything I could in order to meet those goals. This aspect of determination in my personality has allowed me to get to where I am today, a student of George Mason University. Whenever I am faced with an obstacle, such as a hard class, I make

The quality of unimaginable success is determined by grit. Despite confronting difficult life circumstances that delay the process individuals who are passionate, intelligent, and dedicated to one’s own success will continue maintaining consistency throughout their journey. Success is measured by an individuals’ commitment to effectively work hard towards life-changing goals. In the journal article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-term Goals,” Angela L. Duckworth conducts several studies in order to convey human’s capacity for higher achievements while still enduring challenges and failure. Although Duckworth’s research has proven that individuals who are less gritty tend to shift trajectory, I believe working hard and keeping “stamina” is essentially the key to achieving your goals (1088).
With his only income being the money he wins in his local boxing matches and the whatever his boss pays him for his work as a debt collector, his career isn't looking to be a propitious one. However, this all changes when Rocky is given a chance to turn his life around; an opportunity to fight the world heavyweight champion,
Everything that you will accomplish will only come if you are persistent, dedicated, and hard working. Those qualities make up a person’s grit, which should be taught in college composition classes at Central Methodist University.
What does grit mean? Psychologist Angela Duckworth defines it as an effort to reach a long term goal. How do you know if you know if you have grit?
