Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of the most recognized aspects in the world today since companies’ reputation is judged from its CSR policies, quality of its services and products and competitiveness. Many authors relate CSR with ethical conducts in businesses. Many authors therefore give related definitions for both CSR and ethics. Corporate Social Responsibility can be defined as continued commitment to ethical conduct, to provide and contribute to high living standards of the society by facilitating economic developments and improving the standards of living of the employees together with their families, their society and community at large (MallenBaker.net 2011).
Green Marketing on the other hand relates to production and manufacturing of products that are environmental friendly, and their packaging should also be environmental friendly or rather the products should have environmental benefits (About.com 2011). Companies started using this policy after Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and governments started insisting and pressurizing companies to sell only the goods that are environmental friendly as a reaction to increasing rates of global warming and pollution. It was also caused by the increased awareness by customers and people in general. People started valuing environmental friendly goods due to the increasing threat of global warming that has already affected some countries like Baghdad in the Middle East. However, many companies are known to talk and implicate they are selling environmental friendly products but in practice they are not.

Green washing: The disinformation disseminated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible public image. In order for big companies to stay on top of the market today, they are forced to think of advertising strategies to help their public image and advertise their product. Over the years the system has become very complex and also very questionable. Companies are willing to lie, change their logo, and sometimes even their company name just to keep their name and image clean in front of the public just to make sure that they are making their money. Green washing helps this by advertising to the public that they are environmentally supportive and responsible. Most people that are into buying “green products” do not even realize that the company they are buying from is green washing in some sort of way just so that they can attract attention to the public. Green washing companies may advertise that they are “eco-friendly”, but when it comes down to it, the facts hidden behind the curtains beg to differ. Just like in the green washing video we watched in class, the companies may look great compared to the worst companies, but that does not mean what they are doing is still productive for our environmental movement. An organization’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) drives them to look out for the different interests of society. Most business corporations undertake responsibility for the impact of their organizational pursuits and various activities on their customers, employees, shareholders, communities and the environment. With the high volume of general competition between different companies and organizations in varied fields, CSR has become a morally imperative commitment, more than one enforced by the law. A company has an economic obligation. It must earn a favorable return for its stockholders in the restrictions of the law. But, corporate social responsibility means that organizations have also ethical and societal responsibilities that go past their economic responsibilities. CSR needs organizations to develop their documentations of their responsibilities to include other stakeholders such as workers, customers, suppliers, local societies, state governments, international organizations, etc. Ethics could be seen as a fundamental component of individual and group activities at the heart of organizations’ errands.
