500 BC Greek was a very extravagant time period consisting of many succesful playwrights. Oedipus Rex or Oedipus the King by Sophocles can be directly related to historical events of this time. By making these connections, Sophocles changed theater of this time by connecting Oedipus Rex to the Plague of Thebes. Oedipus Rex shows its significance to Ancient Greek Theatre because of its tragic connections to reality, and connections to American Literature.
Sophocles was boring in 496 BC to a very wealthy family during this time (Ferguson 127). Along with Sophocles being born Dramatic plays quickly followed his birth, him being a major contribution (Lassieur). As Sophocles joined life itself, many bad things were going on in this time. “The Plague that is described in Oedipus Rex could be related to the Plague the struck Athens during this time” (Kousoulis 5). “Literature usually reflects the echo of the past” (Kousoulis 6). Schlieman found a way to link the pst with playings using the Illiad (by homer) as a guide (Kousoulis 6). Although they found a guide, the dates at exact content of what was really in the context are not truly known (Ferguson 180). Along with the plague the Persian wars were also present in this time period, but Sophocles was never able to fight. The first war happened too early in his life for him to be able to fight, but he did participate and contribute in the Victory games (Ferguson 127). In Sicily, Italy in 413 BC, Athens lost two armies. Sophocles was in his 80s by this time, but at immediate request he became an administrator to the city (Ferguson 128). Many ideas during ancient times were developed and influenced by Greece. (Lassieur). We can relate to Greece in many ways, with the alphabet and architecture. “Many modern public buildings are modeled after Greek Temples” (Lassiuer). Government was also strongly influenced by Ancient Greece, the democracy was very popular and it eventually spread to the US and was even used by our Founding Fathers (Lassieur). When the Greeks used a democratic government, they gave a little power to everybody (Lassieur) which is what democracy is, it splits the power to everyone. Even today we may being speaking words influenced by the ancient Greeks every day and not know it. “Hundreds of English words came straight from the Ancient Greeks” (Lassieur). American language, literature, architecture, and government, can be directly related back to 500 BC Greek.
