Greek Male Sculptures and Today's Advertising
Freestanding sculpture that decorated the early Classical Period of Greek Art consisted of predominantly male nude figures. The male body was used in seeking to create "more realistic ways to portray the human figure in painting and sculpture and to place figures in more realistic settings"(Stokstad pg 178). This portrayal of young men through freestanding sculpture revealed a sort of obsession with the male body in which society took on as the norm. As opposed to the Greek society, the one of today might associate nudeness with aspects of profanity and vulgarity because of the view that certain parts of the body are not to be seen by public eyes. A nude body of today may also be seen as sexy or provocative. This allows the public art form of yesterday to be replaced by the controversial art form of today.
The Krytios Boy of 480 BCE is an example of this Greek glorification of the young male body. The quest to create this figure into a realistic form proves to accomplish itself in the figure's contrappasto stance, the curved spin...
The Egyptians had influenced Early Greek art for several years; it was during the time of war (Archaic Period) and art was not their top priority. Most of their sculptures were similar to those in Egypt and there was no sense of personal style. However, as peace was approaching, artists started to focus on how to make their work outstanding. They took advantage of their knowledge in anatomy and started applying it to their blocks of marbles. During the early Classical Period, Kritios Boy was sculpted, and it showed the break from the Egyptian style.
Lysippos’s Weary Hercules is sculpted from marble and stands an impressive ten feet, five inches tall.(Farnese Herakles). Herakles is depicted as an extremely muscular human-like and god-like being. He has the body of a god and the weariness of a human. Herakles, exhausted, leans on his club for support after completing the last task of The Twelve Labour's. He holds in his right hand the apples of the Hesperides behind his back, and draped over his club is a lion skin.(,,,) This statue was loved by the Romans and this copy was made for the Baths of Caracalla.(…) Romans saw this statue as an inspiration to exercise, and the closer they got to this image the closer they could be compared to gods. Herakles is still a mortal and we know this because of the nudity in the statue, and it was this human aspect which inspired the Romans to achieve this ideal form. Since the creation of the Weary Hercules (Farnese Herakles) sculpture men have pursued this cultural ideal of the perfect man. The pursuit of the idyllic masculine body has had an interesting journey.
Doryphoros by Polykleitos was originally a Greek bronze made around 450-40B.C. The only way we can see it today is through the Roman marble copies (which is common of many Greek statues.) Some supports had to be added for the change in material, resulting in the addition of the form resembling a tree trunk, the support on the left foot, and the small bar bridging the gap between his right wrist and hip. Doryphoros was originally holding a spear in his left hand; appropriate, given that his name means, literally, “spear-bearer.” The sculpture is a well-known and early example of classical Greek contrapposto (the shifting of weight onto one leg and off-axis shoulders and arms.) One leg nearly appears to be lifting off the ground, giving the effect of movement. The perceived weight shift adds more dynamism to the piece, and contributes to the realism of the figure. The resulting slight “s-curve” of the figure is true to what we might see in life, and reflects an interest in proportion and anatomy, as seen with many Greek sculptures of the age. This is made particularly clear in the defined muscle groups of the figure and attention to details such as the structure of the knees, hands, and feet. Polykleitos sculpted many athletic male bodies in the nature of his personal aesthetic canon, which we can see exemplified here through the intense attention to the mathematics of the human body. The contours of the figure are visually interesting and although the figure does not hold much facial expression, his body language and presence speak volumes of his existence as the epitome of masculinity.
Everyday tens of millions of sharks are murdered and hunted primarily for their fins to be used in soup. The definition of shark fining means the removal of shark fins while the rest of the body is thrown back into the ocean to drown, starve or get eaten by another animal all leading up to death. Although shark fining has been around for several decades the practice needs to be stopped. Killing sharks for their fins used in soup is known to cause serious health issues and is also unbeneficial towards the oceans ecosystem.
In Eliot’s The Wasteland, It seems as if the more his world is falling apart, the more he wants to break it down and find what really matters or what he really needs to continue living and to truly appreciate life. As he examines his surroundings, he realizes so much of it is in ruins, and that alone makes him feel as though his own life is slipping away, as if he does not even control his own fate. Eliot also realizes how upside down and backward his world is now functioning. Everything that was once right is now wrong, and everything that once seemed moral is not moral any more. Once this is brought to his attention, Eliot decides the only way to overcome this is to do away with the bad and keep only the good, then reforming the old into a new overall positive and secure place of true life.
The Greek believed the human body was the measure of all things, therefore the artists created sculptures in a very detailed fashion which made them very life-like although the size of
In Greek art humanism is extremely predominate, especially in the sculptures. The sculptors are no longer focusing on the Gods, the Gods are no longer the main subject of the sculpture; now humans are, human bodies. Even though the Greek still sculpted the Gods, the Gods now had more human physical characteristics. The sculptors are now starting to focus on the human physique and the human body. The sculptors are carefully sculpting sculptures to replicate the human body. Sculptures that express humanism are now nude and emphases on the beauty of a human body and of the human mind. “…. beautifully realized in great detail, right down to the veins on the back of the hand, reflects a higher mathematical order and embodies the ideal harmony between the natural world and the intellectual or spiritual realm” (Sayre 140). This is how Sayre describes a sculpture that is dated ca. 450-440 BCE. The sculptures also start to show emotion and have feeling rather than sculptures before humanism, n...
This long poem consists of the narrator musing to an unknown audience, expressing his frustrations in a complex way. This poem, like others of Eliot’s, is hard to interpret and typically has a deep unseen meaning. It is thought to be a narration about a man and his issues. According to some, it is thought that to be a criticism of “Edwardian society” and the narrator’s problem is that he cannot find reasonable idea for himself to live. This poem, along with The Wasteland, is considered to be the beginning of Modernist poetry. Before these poems existed, most all poetry was Romanticism and Augustan poetry.
David, living in the shadows of his brothers and continuously on the run from a resentful King Saul, he grew into popularity after exterminated Goliath, the enormous Philistine worrier. As story has it, David used his sling to kill the grotesque warrior by shooting a rock into his head. Even after becoming king, he was constantly in battle defending his kingdom. A men who was greatly devoted to God, yet committed adultery and was an absent father, was still referred to by God as “a man after his heart.” So what made Donatello, Verrocchio and Michelangelo immortalize him; was is it his strength or was it his great devotion to God?
The first major period in ancient Greek sculptural development is The Archaic Period. The Archaic Period in the times of ancient Greece took place in 600-480 B.C.E. The main focus of the artists of this period was the idea of human figure. The key example of sculpture from this period is Kouros, which is a lifesize sculpture of the nude male standing with his arms down by the sides and with one foot forward. Another example of sculpture of this period is Kore. Kore is a clothed female sculpture. The features that are unique to the sculptures of this period were enlarged eyes and smiling faces.Personal feelings were reflected within art. Furthermore, The Archaic Period introduced red-figure vases and temples. It was one of the most famous themes of the vase painting. One example of red-figure vases would be Ajax and Achilles. This artwor...
Within the past fifty years, the slaughter of sharks has risen 400 percent (Sea Shepherd). This translates to an estimated 100 million sharks that are fished per year (Predators as Prey). According to the World Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened Species,
The human body, especially the nude male figure, has been a subject of art since the first scratching appeared on cave walls. Stick figures with phalluses denoted the male, procreation and dominance. Archeologists have found evidences proving that the male nude appeared in Egypt in the early Dynastic periods and in early Mesopotamia four thousand years ago.
In the portrayal of the human nude, the standards of formal complexity had been set by Michelangelo and the norm of idealized beauty by Raphael. But in the work of these artists’ Mannerist successors, an obsession with style and technique in figural composition often outweighed the importance and meaning of the subject matter. The highest value was instead placed upon the apparently effortless solution of intricate artistic problems, such as the portrayal of the nude in complex and artificial
Greek art and sculpture have made a significant difference in humanity, its unique style of art has been copied and replicated, Many of which people of the current era would classify as the epitome of art itself. The Greek are smart by using different form of materials in their sculptures including marble and limestone, clay and stone as these were available in large quantities in Greece _, However, not many clay-made sculpture survived due to its fragile nature and very few have survived.
The beginning of The Waste Land begins by describing a scenery, “April is the cruellest month,” (Eliot 5) this exemplifies the season change and how it bares all of the imperfections that the snow shielded. Dead trees and unpleasant sights are exposed. This is true not only for physical surroundings, but also spiritually as well. People buried their thoughts and feelings much like the snow did the unpleasant landscape. People ignored the condition of their atmosphere and revealed no emotion or effort to change it. People can become so far removed from their environment making them indifferent to what goes on around them. Rather than working to put the shattered remnants back together, they retracted from society and their emotions instead. They bare no feelings, thoughts or p...
