Northrup stated that “there never was a more kind, noble, candid, Christian man than William Ford.”(Northup, 48) The way that William Ford’s slaves and wife treated them kindly as well as Ford himself made Northup see a little glimmer of hope. Ford would have church services on Sunday for the slaves, preaching to them and encouraging them to have morals and have moral behavior. Because Ford was so kind Platt saves Ford a lot of money by his hard work and gets named “smartest nigger in the Pine Wood”( Northup, 54) I feel like this was a turning point for Northup. The "robber barons" were men who had made a fortune during the mid to late twentieth century and were able to fund other's projects and help American capitalism progress (3 - 1). Even so , Southern whites in the antebellum period never forgot nat Turner and the violence he unleashed in southeastern Virginia. For antebellum blacks- and for their descendants- the name of Nat Turner took on a profoundly different connotation. He became a legendary black hero- especially in southeastern Virginia, where blacks enshrined his name in an oral tradition that still flourishes today. They regard Nat's rebellion as the "First War" against slavery and the Civil War as the second. So in death Nat achieved a kind of victory denied him in life- he became a martyred soldier of slave liberation who broke his chains and murdered whites because slavery had murdered Negroes.
Northup was purchased at the slave market to a planter named Ford. However, because of Ford's financial difficulties, he sold Northup to cover his debt. Northup was working with his new owner, who was very harsh. An argument ensued over the way Northup was planing. Tibeats began throwing axes and hatchets at Northup. Northup responded in a physical manner. It appeared as though, to save his own life, Northup would have to take Tibeats's, which would mean certain hanging for Northup. If a slave took his owner's life it was a capital offense. Instead he “leaped a fence near by, and hurried across the plantation,” thus making his first escape attempt (102). He was chased through the bayou and swamp by both men and dogs....
“The point is that you can’t be too greedy,” says Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States. Many people look up to him as he is apparently now president. The definition of greed is an intense and selfish desire for something especially wealth or power. Greed is a part of human nature. The main character, Tom Sawyer experiences it quite often in the book. Thomas Sawyer is an eleven-year-old boy who lives with his aunt in a small religious town. One of the themes that Mark Twain explores in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is that everyone has some amount of greed in them. Three examples that support this theme are when Tom risked his life in the search for gold, Tom tried to get Becky by making her jealous, and when Tom and his friends ran away because they didn’t feel appreciated.
He got a taste of power and it changed him which is a perfect representation of what power does to a man. Since he had made a name for himself as a “negro-breaker”, while dehumanizing others he dehumanized himself by losing everything moral and just, leaving him as hollow as a shell--being irrational and unethical. He has no respect for women and treats them like animals. To him, their only purpose is to be a “Breeder”. As a Christian man, he is supposed to live a righteous life that is pleasing in the eyes of God; however, he believes that he is doing what is just which brings one to think that he may be as ignorant as the slaves: "He seemed to think himself equal to deceiving the Almighty" (37). To believe that slaves are meant to be belittled and leaving them uneducated shows signs of insecurities. "...I do verily believe that he sometimes deceived himself into the solemn belief, that he was a sincere worshipper of the most high God" (38) Douglass can be observed here to challenge that there was something wrong with the idea of being Christian and
From the start, the slave traders tried to tarnish Northup’s identity by beating him till he gave the idea up that he is no man’s slave and just a slave that escaped from Georgia. Even when the slaves were all traveling together and Northup mentioned he’d been to New York got him a death threat from his Master Burch. Slave owners would also change the name of the slaves. The man who would auction off the slaves, Theophilus Freeman, changed Northup’s name to Platt and Eliza’s name to Dradey making it even more difficult for Northup’s friends or family to find him and rescue him.
Gerald Ford was the 38th president of the United States of America. He became president right after Richard Nixon resigned in 1974. This was not an expected time to have a new president. Ford said, “I assume the Presidency under extraordinary circumstances … This is an hour of history that troubles our minds and hurts our hearts (thewhitehouse.gov pg. 1).” While Ford had not planned to be a president, he still did great tasks, served 25 years in Congress, and he did his best.
Throughout his autobiography Frederick Douglass talks of the many ways a slave and master would be corrupted by the labor system that was so deeply entrenched in the south as a result of demand for cotton, and other labor-intensive crops. The master justified his actions through a self-serving religion and a belief that slaves were meant to be in their place. Masters were usually very cruel and self centered. Most had never been in the fields with the slaves. They didn’t understand the conditions that they were putting the slaves under. Being a slaveholder could make you inhuman and change your whole person. Frederick Douglass took a stand against it in his own way, he was self-reliant and believed what was happening. He stuck to himself and was always thinking about things. He never let things just pass him by, he took advantage of all of his opportunities. Being self-reliant especially in his time, is one of the greatest traits that someone can possess.
Born into freedom, Solomon Northup was kidnapped into slavery at the age of 30. With the promise of money and adventure, he was sent to Washington D.C, unknown of what’s about to come. Soon Northup was soon drugged, beaten, and sold into slavery within view of the capital. During 1800’s, about one million African Americans were transported to the Deep South in the domestic slave trade.
During the time of slavery, slaves were put to work on plantation, fields, and farms. They were considered property to their slave-owners and put under unfair living conditions. Growing up in this era, we can see the injustice between white and colored people. And one slave by the name of Fredrick Douglass witnessed this unjust tension. And because of this tension, dehumanizing practices became prominent among the slaves and in slave society. The most prominent of these injustices is the desire of slave owners to keep their slaves ignorant. This practice sought to deprive the slaves of their human characteristics and made them less valued. Fredrick Douglass was able to endure and confront this issue by asserting his own humanity. Frederick Douglass is known through the eyes of many as a passionate abolitionist, who worked to gain rights for the African American population. In reality, he was much more than this. As an adult he was a prized author, an editor of a newspaper, a lecturer, and a salesman (Schmitt, 1). Such accomplishments were not gained overnight, though, his journey was a long one riddled with pain and challenges. He began his life as a slave, raised by his grandparents (3). As he grew older and more useful he was moved around to other plantations, at one of with he learned to read under the watchful eye of his master’s wife (5). After a few years here, it was observed by his masters that he had become “softened” by the relaxed life of a city slave, so he was sent to a renowned slave beater to be straightened out. To their dismay, by this point in his life Douglass was strong and courageous, and after six months at the hands of the slave beater he began fighting back (6). Scared of what Douglass would do to his reputation, the slave beater sent the boy back to his previous owner. It was at this time Douglass planned his escape to New York. These two men suffered in different way. Booker T. Washington was born a slave, but was given his freedom when the emancipation proclamation was signed. After saving and losing his funds, he was still determined to attend Hampton Institute. While diligently studying, he supported his sick mother by holding the position of janitor. Frederick Douglas, on the other hand, did not have his freedom handed to like booker. He zealously persuade his freedom, more than once running away from his masters. Eventually, he did break free of his captors with the help of his soon to be wife. While neither of their roads where easy, booker did not have to suffer though the beatings, the pain, and mainly the pure evil reality of being a slave in during the years preceding the civil war.
Solomon Northup’s Twelve Years A Slave, tells his life story as a free black man from the North who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Pre-Civil War. He is a violinist that is tricked to attending a gig at a circus for money. Instead he is drugged and sold into slavery in the South. His master starts to call him Platt even though it’s not his real name. During the next twelve years he survived as human property of several different cruel slave masters. He talks about his life as a slave and how no one should be treated that way. In January 1853, Northup was finally freed by one of his closest Northern friends who came to his rescue. His friends were white themselves and knew that Solomon shouldn’t of been kept a slave. He finally returns home to his family in New York and there, wrote his memoir in Twelve Years A
We see a carriage pull up to the plantation, and someone calls out for Platt, better known as Solomon. Solomon answers and approaches the sheriff, where he is then asked several detailed questions. We discover that in the carriage is Mr. Parker, a shop owner from Saratoga and the friend of Solomon that Bass did indeed write to. Epps is furious and enraged and basically starts throwing a fit. Solomon is now able to travel home, where he is reunited with his family after twelve long years. They may be twelve years older, but the emotions are still there at seeing each other again after all of this time. We learn that his daughter has gone on to get married and even had a son, and named him Solomon Northup in honor of him. Henry Ford was a man with struggles that hurt him, but he overcame them and became a successful person he was. Henry Ford was not successful at first because of his car's prices were too high to afford, so he created the idea of an assembly line, and then he created it. Henry Ford a man who was very successful, but he had struggles that he overcame to be the person he was. He had struggles getting a successful car company that made millions and still is still famous today. Henry Ford was not successful at first with car companies. He also had struggles with his religious beliefs that changed how people think of him. He was criticized for his religious beliefs against Jews it hit him hard with the press. He also had relations with Hitler and other Nazis. He was also involved in some political and charitable events.
