Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglas are both ideally similar but at the same time, vastly different. While their paths to freedom are not in line, they share the same views on the value of education. Likewise goals and methods are a point on which they do not agree. Neither of them lived a soft and easy life, but if you were to ask one of them, he would tell you that he lived life to the fullest and it was good. These two men suffered in different way. Booker T. Washington was born a slave, but was given his freedom when the emancipation proclamation was signed. After saving and losing his funds, he was still determined to attend Hampton Institute. While diligently studying, he supported his sick mother by holding the position of janitor. Frederick Douglas, on the other hand, did not have his freedom handed to like booker. He zealously persuade his freedom, more than once running away from his masters. Eventually, he did break free of his captors with the help of his soon to be wife. Douglas. Both of our two men were leaders in the fight for education for all communities. Either through letters and mentors or through collages and classes they shared a passion for learning. They both believed that education was a higher golden pillar, that though difficult to reach, was the key to success, productivity, and ultimately the freedom of the enslaved people. Booker was moved to teach people, instead of all trades, a specific skill, so that they would become experts in their area. This would earn the respect of the white man. Goal, ambitions, and methods are like snowflakes, in that no two are the same. Even though individual people may have the same problems, it cannot be solved by thinking and acting in the same manner. While they both learned to read, Douglas viewed it as a way of getting back at those who did him wrong. In his mind he was proving them wrong, he was showing them all that they were wrong about him and that he was better than just a mere piece of property. Booker saw the art of reading as an esteemed achievement. He would always place his sympathy and plea towards the the white community. Telling them to “cast down their buckets” and to become a teacher or mentor to the “lesser”. In contrast, Douglas opposed the idea of “charity” from the white man. Saying “if a man fails do not help him” Both of these fathers of freedom received recognition and rewards for their endeavors towards the African race.
Booker went on to found Alabama's Tuskegee institute in 1881. Though with a mere plot of land, he would mold the school into a center for industrial and agricultural training. Fredrick Douglas became America’s first African American nominated Vice President. As you can see these prestigious black leaders have many differences and similarities. Their paths to freedom where nothing alike. They shared a passion for learning and teaching their people. And they had many differences in their methods, ambitions, and goals. Booker T. Washington was an African American leader who established an African-American college in 1181. Then in 1895 delivered the Atlanta Compromise Speech to an audience of mainly Southerners, but some Northerners were present. In his speech he made a few points. He said, “No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem.” Washington believed that the African American race needed to learn first that manual labor was just as important as the work of intellects. He thought that until they learned this they were not worthy of becoming intellects themselves. The color line is thus important in teaching them this lesson. DuBois’s Views During the late 19th and early 20th century, racial injustice was very prominent and even wildly accepted in the South. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Booker T. Washington was a great leader. He was all for helping the black community become stronger. His goal was very hard to achieve considering the period in which he lived. America, during Washington's time was under reconstruction. The Civil War was over and blacks were, by law, equal to any other human being. Slavery was abolished and many southerners had a problem with that. To many whites, black people didn't deserve and weren't intellectually "ready" for such freedoms. The South had such a hard time accepting it that Union troops were stationed in southern states who couldn't cooperate. Booker T. Washington is a prime example to southerners who think that blacks can amount to nothing. Booker T. Washington’s ideologies for economic advancement and self-help played a major role in his approach to fight for equal rights. By founding the Tuskegee Institute in Mound Bayou, he created a university that was segregated for black students and encouraged higher educational standards (Meier 396). Booker T. Washington didn’t know many details about his birth; only that he was born on a plantation in Franklin County, Virginia in 1858 or 1859. Although he knew very little about his mother’s relatives, he knew even less about his father. The living conditions of Washington, his mother and siblings were beyond imperfect lacking windows, a suitable door, flooring and a bed. His shoes were wooden, and his clothes were made of a course fiber that severely aggravated his skin. He had very poor eating habits, and his childhood consisted of all work and no play or education.
