This is the choice that a young princess was faced with, but what did she choose? In “The Lady Or The Tiger,” the princess gave into her own greed and would rather see her lover die, than see him happy with someone else. She would rather end his life shorter for her own good instead of having his best interest at heart. Greed has influenced human behavior for thousands of years. It is perfectly natural to covet objects or to pine for a promotion. Almost everyone wishes they were wealthier or owned a nicer house. Society has learned to accept these forms of greed because they are a common thread throughout civilization. But, on occasion, greed can transform and twist people into inhumane monsters. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” exposes the greed and selfishness of humans. Marquez expresses Elisenda and Pelayo’s hatred for people on their land who want to catch a glimpse of the angel when he says “Her spine twisted from sweeping up so much market trash, then got the idea of fencing in the yard and charging five cents admission to see the angel.” The inconveniences that the angel has caused drove them to use him and make money off of him by turning him into a giant spectacle. Despite the fact that the angel is not unusual the townspeople treat him as if he was a zoo animal as they “Burned his side with a hot iron.” This sends a message that people often ignore the fact that their actions have the power to create miserable situations for others.
In the case of the first poem, it was more of the perspective of a high class woman. The narrator who saw the women cleaning in the airport did not like the scene due to the fact that she believes that there are better jobs and options out there. As a woman coming from a higher class, she may think one way. However, we do not know whether or not the lady actually cleaning feels the same way. Two novels, written by Steinbeck and Fitzgerald, portray this underlying greed and envy better than most novels of that period. Women will do almost anything for love, to be loved, or to keep love. That is their mission. When women become jealous, however, the love they want to hold onto disappears, becomes selfishness, and one does not know if it is love anymore. In the short story “The Lady, or the Tiger?” written by Frank R. Stockton, a semi barbaric princess motions which door her lover, the accused man, must open to either receive punishment or a reward. The punishment is to be devoured by a fierce tiger and the reward is to be married to a lovely damsel of the court. This semi barbaric princess loves the man and chooses which door the man deserves to open. Like many women in love, this princess would not dare to let another woman take her lover away from her. Instead, jealousy takes over and the door that opens will emerge a tiger because she will go berserk to see her man happy with another woman, and will prefer to have him eaten by a tiger and await the princess herself on a heavenly earth.
The play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare illustrates how greed for power and wealth can result in the destruction of oneself as well as others. The play's central character, Macbeth is not happy as a high-ranking thane - leading him to assassinate Duncan to become King, while unknowingly dooming himself. Moving towards the second tale “The Wife of Bath” love and death play a very large toll on the outcome of the story. We begin with a knight who rapes a woman and is given the death penalty. His “love” for her granted him a golden ticket to a death, but miraculously is spared to find the answer to question his life depended on. When introduced to the old woman, he is forced to pledge himself to her in order for help. She helps him and he lives but is now burdened with a woman he does not love. He has no love for her yet is forced to marry and remain miserable.
