Great School Leadership

Great school leadership provides a culture in which students, educational professionals, and families can engage in the learning process and thrive. As a future leader of a school or special education department, it will be important for me to develop a framework that allows for this to happen. Great leaders are active listeners and responders. They initiate change when it is necessary to best serve the ever evolving demands of the district and community that they serve. Great school leaders understand the ebbs and flows that impact philosophies, policies and laws, and are adaptable to best meet the needs of their students, families, and staff.

It provides a framework for accomplishing objectives in a manner that makes the school more cohesive and coherent. In the publication, School Leadership That Works, Robert Marzano defines twenty-one researched based strategies for effective school leadership. His insights are based on researched and tested strategies. Developing a good school culture is at the forefront of a good leadership program. “Culture is the shared values, beliefs, and feelings of a community,” it brings together many theories of leadership and it establishes an environment where students can attain high levels of achievement (Marzano). Strong leadership creates an environment where it is safe to explore new possibilities. A strong leader is visible and approachable. Relationships are pivotal to the success of a school. It is with personal connection that one can build credibility within their community (Marzano). At this point in my journey, it is important for me to recognize the qualities that I bring to the table, but it is just as critical for me to learn from and listen to others.
