Good Morning/Afternoon, I'm Sushmit Barua and I will guide you on a breathtaking journey through The Great Barrier Reef, focusing on its location, rainfall and temperature, the nature and quality of the soil, human alteration of the biome and the environmental management. The Great Barrier Reef is located off Australia’s north-eastern coast. This tropical climate zone provides warm water temperatures for coral reef survival, stretching from the northern tip of Cape York to the southern boundary near Bundaberg. Its proximity to coastal cities makes it accessible to humans, allowing for tourism but making it vulnerable to human activity. The Great Barrier Reef region consists of two distinct seasons: a warm, dry winter with low rainfall from May to October, and a hot, humid summer with higher rainfall from November to April. The average annual rainfall adds up to around 2,010 millimetres, with the weather often moderate, but in the tropical regions, intense heat, humidity and occasional …show more content…

This calcium carbonate-rich soil supports coral growth, maintaining the reef's structure and providing a foundation for coral polyps to anchor and grow. The Great Barrier Reef has the largest collection of coral reefs and consists of over 400 types of coral, 1500 species of fish, and 4000 types of mollusc. It’s also the habitat for dozens of species of sharks, rays and mammals like the dugong and the green sea turtle. The main vegetation includes over 300,000 hectares of sea grasses and various types of algae. Human activity has significantly altered the reef, mainly due to coastal development, pollution, overfishing and tourism. Climate change has worsened these issues, causing coral bleaching due to rising temperatures causing stress and when under stress corals expel the microscopic algae that live in their
