I walk into a old, dusty, antique shop. The man behind the counter greets me with a quick, “hello”. Then I greet him back and head on down into the shops aisles. I was trying to find the perfect gravy holder for my families Thanksgiving dinner. I find this nice golden potential gravy holder and inspect it. It has a little smudge on the side of it, so I rub it off with my sleeve. A low rumble startles me, and my gravy holder starts to shake. So I drop it and see what’s going on, POOF! A man, about seven feet tall towers over me in the store. “ Master, you now have three wishes, use them wisely.” He says in a low voice. “ Three wishes?” I say in confusion. “ Yes, three wishes. I will stay only until you have made your final wish. But other than that, I am yours.” …show more content…
I think about it very deeply. Then I have made my mind. My three wishes are to be 18 already, stay strong forever, and never get sick again. Automatically I asked for my first wish, “ Your wish is my command.” Then POOF! I grew much taller, but not as tall as the genie was, and had facial hair. I feel my face and look in the mirror, a beard! I have always wanted a beard. The genie disappears and I walk out the store with the man behind the counter looking up at me. When I get outside, I am amazed at what I see. A brand new car sitting in the parking lot, magically, the keys to that beaut was in my hand. I pop open the door and took off. Being 18 was amazing. So as I am driving, I pass by a football field with some people playing tackle football without pads. I think back to my second wish. I said, “
“ Park right there so we can be right next to the store.” “What flavor are you going to get” Nish asks. Cherry coke I reply. I walk into the local 7 Eleven on Garth road and greet Sal. “Hola Dorianna medium iced-tea lemonade as usual?” “Not today Sal” I replied. I walk to the corner of the shop where all the slurpee flavors are and get a big gulp. I slowly pour the cherry coke flavor slurpee into my cup and go to the cashier to pay however, once I arrive at the cashier, I realized that I forgot my wallet. Without thinking twice about it, I decided to leave the shop with my slurpee. We left the shop and stood outside of 7 Eleven and just slurping our slurpees.
...ears of Genie’s life in the ‘light’, scientists were giving her an immense amount of attention because of the lack of communication skills she had. They had great imaginations, as to what was going to be learned from Genie and language development. Through Genie, scientists were glad to announce they had found a “critical period” for learning language. This critical period is vital if children want to learn how to speak. Despite everything we could’ve continued to learn, Genie’s mom was not allowing any further testing. She was allowed to see one single person, but no tests were to be taken. Eventually, Genie left to live with her mother, figuring out that she couldn’t care for her. She was then placed in different mental institutions, and foster homes. The last report of Genie is 2008 living in California in psychological confinement (Newton) (Gazzaniga) (YouTube).
Having a wish fulfilled is a desire everyone keeps, but granting one is a special characteristic of a chosen few. Such is the ideology of the Make a wish foundation. This simple, but powerful belief is what drives the Make-A-Wish foundation. For children who must face the uncertainty of a tomorrow, due to their rapidly deteriorating health, a wish is more than just a desire. It’s a hope. Hope is what carries us out of the darkest of slums, to keep going. To face a tomorrow. Make-A-Wish is committed to granting the wish of every eligible child. They do this believing that wishes can make sick children feel better, and sometimes, when they feel better, they get better. Since the spring of 1980, they have been granting the wishes of children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical conditions. The make a wish foundation has the ability to not only unite a society as whole and further the awareness of life threatening illnesses, but also gives hope to individuals and a community as a whole.
1970, Genie was found by social workers in Los Angeles, California. She was severely abused which caused her to be extremely developmentally delayed. Although Genie was 13 when the social workers found her, they had believed she was between five or six years old due to her lack of development. From the age of 20 months until 13 years old, Genie had been locked in a dark room alone and tied to a potty chair. Some nights she was left in that position, others she was tied into a sleeping bag or to the side of her crib. She never was socialized or even spoken to by her parents. When Genie was found she could not walk correctly, eat properly, or speak in any language, except short phrases such as, 'stop it' and 'no more'. Genie was admitted into Children's Hospital in Los Angeles; where specialists started to take care of her and started to try and teach her how to speak.
A question was brought up during the film; was genie damaged from her years of abuse or retarded from birth? Genie’s father believed from an early age that Genie was retarded and therefore needed to be kept in isolation. However, this was his own bias. For 13 years, Genie grew up detached from people, there was no concern in her upbringing nor did she have any significant life experiences. Genie was not given the freedom of opening herself up to the world around her, this was unjustifiable as a child relies on their surroundings in order to learn, grow and prosper. Socialization is the process in which an individual interacts with others in turn allowing them to become more aware of themselves. George Herbert Mead outlined that “the self” is not there from birth, it develops through social experience. It was apparent that Genie did not have a sense of self, due to the lack of interaction between others and her environment. Mead also developed the idea of significant others, which are people that play an important role in the early stages of a child’s social development. Genie did not have that figure, as her mother and father were both dis-engaged from her life. They did not support Genie, and teach her the fundamental basic skills that are needed in order for a child to fit into the basic norms of society. Genie did not take part in secondary socialization, as she was not given the opportunity to go to school. Therefore, she acted much younger than a normal thirteen-year-old, and did not receive the proper care a young girl was obliged to
The process of life begins with a wish. Throughout childhood we are constantly asked what we wish to become when we grow up. Usually the answer is a Doctor or Vet. This was my answer as well. Then I became ill and my life suddenly was altered. I became the girl who was gone almost everyday due to an elusive illness. My illness changed who I was and made me want to help others the way I was helped. I wish to become a Nurse. The process of getting there was not easy. I had to deal with tough things such as missing school, working through my illness, and those things led me to my aspirations today.
The early life of Genie was horrific. When Genie was only twenty months old Clark Wiley was told that his daughter could possibly be mentally retarded. He took this news seriously and locked his daughter in a dark room in their house. The room was located at the back of the house and the windows were covered with aluminum foil.
“…If you set me three tasks and I perform them successfully will you lift the curse off me?
David Wrigler was her principal investigator and foster father. Researchers believed that Genie was retarded due to her long isolation; however, her brain showed improvements. Genie’s learning improved each year after being rescued. After three years, she hit a wall and was unable to progress much further. A lawsuit was filed on the team by Genie’s mother, and ‘The Genie’ case was closed. She was fostered by the Wrigler family for four years, but when the case was filed, she was rehomed back into a children's hospital.
She realistically didn’t know anything about the outside world. Imagine how many new sounds and colors she saw: the blue sky, the sound of cars passing or even the feeling of grass on her feet. Genie was in a new world with strange but delightful experiences that awaited her. She loved every minute of it but approached everything with extreme caution.
...e future is that my children can live in a place where helpful and life-changing medicines, are legal and available for the use of all people.
“We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy” (Make a Wish America). Make A Wish is an incredible organization that runs off the people to make dying children’s wishes come true. Make A Wish wishes help children fight harder against their illness. For others Make a Wish completes the child’s dying wish before their death. Make A Wish is a non-profit foundation where you get to make a child’s dying wish come true.
I do not know exactly everything that I want on this bucket list, but I do know three of the things on this list. Being successful, is at the top of the list, I’d like to be an independent adult, and not turn out, to be thirty and still living in my parents basement. I’d like to be able to see the world, learn about different cultures, the world is so big, it’d be nice to know more about it. Lastly, I’d like to be able to raise a child, but before I do that I’d like to get myself settled down. Many people don’t know what they have on their bucket list and that’s okay, because death is a very touchy subject, but knowing what you want to accomplish in advance feels better when you’re able to check it
My biggest dream of all is to be remembered. I want to touch people in such a way that they will never forget who I am. I want them to tell their grandchildren stories about me and for them to tell their grandchildren and so on. That way, I’ll still be alive years after I actually die. However, this will be very difficult.
