An economy is always changing, more and more people are being kicked from it or becoming visible to it again. However, what is the best plan to reduce those who are kicked from it The Gracchi Brothers, Dr.King, or President Obama's plan? The answer is the Gracchi Brothers’ economic plan that was introduced to the Romans in or around 2 century B.C. while wealthy patricians had been taken over Plebeian land. The taxes would have been much more affordable and the plan would have provided more job opportunities than just farming. The taxes would be much more affordable in Rome because many plebs look for grains while shopping for food and the price will be lowered. This shows that the plebs will be saving more money which means they can afford more needs around Rome. This law is shown in the text, “lower the prices of grain and lowering the price of rent to the common people,” (Yero 45,46). This demonstrates that multiple key purchases inside of Rome will be much more affordable. The prices of grains had been lowered meaning that the plebs are having much more money available. This is important because if the cost for products are less, than the economy is changing so the plebs are making a fair amount of money now because the cost for what they buy is less. They can afford taxes and pay for other miscellaneous items that they want on their land that they live on. Another positive part about the Gracchi Brothers plan is that it offers more job opportunities than farming. In a previous reading, it stated a citizen who owns land in Rome can become a Roman soldier. This means that when a pleb had received land from the government they can put themselves or sons into the military to have multiple sources of income. Leading up to the year 1981, America had fallen into a period of “stagflation”, a portmanteau for ‘stagnant economy’ and ‘high inflation’. Characterized by high taxes, high unemployment, high interest rates, and low national spirit, America needed to look to something other than Keynesian economics to pull itself out of this low. During the election of 1980, Ronald Reagan’s campaign focused on a new stream of economic policy. His objective was to turn the economy into “a healthy, vigorous, growing economy [which would provide] equal opportunities for all Americans, with no barriers born of bigotry or discrimination.” Reagan’s policy, later known as ‘Reaganomics’, entailed a four-point plan which cut taxes, reduced government spending, created anti-inflationary policy, and deregulated certain products. Though ‘Reaganomics’ was successful both at controlling “stagflation” and promoting economic growth, it has and always will be an extremely controversial topic regarding the redistribution of wealth.

At first, he designed his primary goal to rouse the populace against the current government in a personal goal for the death of Tiberius. Following the initial upset in the system of government, he moved to create an improved system for the people of Italy through social reform. Many laws and decrees enacted favored the populace, but offended the senators. Even though Gaius created progress for the Senate for decades, it came at a price of death for him.

This helped move people to work toward better conditions for the masses. Because of efforts like these, significantly better conditions exist in the U.S. now for the masses. At one point in time poverty was the general fact of the world. Man was always expected to live on the line of poverty, majority of the economic thinkers couldn’t see the world moving away from this standard but we did and have gained great affluence. As society has grown from this poverty stricken state it once was in, into an affluent one, the ideas used to run it have yet to change in some ways. In The Affluent Society, John Kenneth Galbraith explains how with great economic growth there should be growth in economic ideas as well.
David J Lynch says that, “ [s]ocieties that manage a narrower gap between rich and poor enjoy longer economic expansions”, however, in the United States the gap between the have and have-nots has widened (source C). “This country is just getting worse and worse and worse … and that is not a recipe for stable growth” (source C). If we do not do something soon our capitalist country will fall. In order for the income inequality gap to lessen to create a more stable economy the government must invest in education and unionize workers and not provide higher taxation for the top one percent.

The Significance of the Gracchi "When Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus sought to establish the liberty of the common people and expose the crimes of the oligarchs, the guilty nobles took fright and opposed their proceedings by every means at their disposal" - Cicero. The Gracchi brothers were clearly well intentioned men who had the interests of Rome at heart, instead of their own, which was a common attitude amongst the other senators. The reforms of the Gracchi were long over-due and their programs were genuine attempts to deal with Rome's problems. During the Gracchi's existence, Rome was facing a number of social, political and economic problems. They were frustrated with the conservatism and selfishness of the oligarchy and so adopted methods which threatened the balance between the senate, the magistrates and the people which had existed for a very long time - in this way they can be regarded as revolutionary.
It appears that Caesar's death marked an epoch in Roman history where civil wars were once again resurrected. Furthermore, Caesar introduced social and economic reforms. In his process of ameliorating Rome's social condition, the provinces became richer as the Roman businessmen were restricted from exploiting them. The largest group in America is facing extinction. We are talking of course about the American middle class. In 1971 the American middle class population was 36% higher than the population of the lower class. However, today the middle class population is now only 22% higher than the lower class (McDill). This is only a 14% drop spread over 44 years. The major issue here is that while the middle class shrinks, the upper and lower classes are growing. Financial experts believe that soon the middle class will become nonexistent and America will be divided into two extremes, poverty and wealth. This issue has become so severe that the United States government has stepped in and created a “middle class task force” passed as part of the government “stimulus package” of 2009. However most experts including Kent McDill of the millionaires’ corner, Doyle McManus of the LA Times, Erik Kain of Forbes magazine believe that the government’s program is putting a knife in the middle class. They believe this because the government is taxing businesses until they are forced to leave America and go overseas. This, along with the rise of mechanical workers and ignorance of the issues facing the middle class led to the decreasing job market. Jobs in America will soon be split into either very high paying upper class jobs or very low paying jobs. This makes the job market a hit or miss in America. It is predicted that America will soon be either very rich or very poor with no middle ground.
While the the 1%, are secured, no one is addressing the rest of the people. As the economy flourishes, housing, higher education and health care, and child care increases with it to the point where 30 percent of a person’s income goes towards housing. People are finding it impossible to purchase a house with their middle class incomes. People begin to fall out of the once stable middle class because too much is needed to be sacrificed in order to live in a stable home. The Roman Republic had taken the idea of unifying the people of the country with both “courage and high morality,” “combined in one soul or in one state,” to make it difficult to be overcome by enemies (Page 146). due to the forceful rule of Sparta, the Helots surrounding the Spartan polis decided to break free and revolt. This allowed for the larger powers to capitalize on the weakened infrastructure and leave Sparta defenseless since they could not fend off both forces. Moreover, a key to the success of the Roman Empire was also the downfall of the Greek city-state Sparta. On behalf of the neighboring powers, Sparta they had ruled over them to work the land under slavery. In contrast, the Romans had let the surrounding landowners and city-states to govern autonomously without taxes or any tribute payments and had only required for the people to be loyal to the Roman Republic and contribute troops to Rome’s armies. This allowed for the size of the Roman republic to grow alongside with its army all under one rule. Furthermore, a settler might forfeit its Roman citizenship to land in a new colony and consolidate Italy under the rule of the Roman Republic. David Shipler says it best when he writes, “Relief will come, if at all, in an amalgam that recognizes both the society’s obligation through government and business, and the individual’s obligation through labor and family —and the commitment of both society and individual.” (Shipler 5786-5788) It is time for America to open its eyes and see the invisible working poor.
America’s upper class has been getting richer since the past three decades, and we have still not found a way to stop this. We have been unable to find a way to distribute America’s wealth equally, so we can have a decent lower class and a good middle class. Inequality has caused many people to struggle in various ways, but their is alway another side to the story.
