Dracula
Dracula is a book that was written in 1897 by Bram Stoker. Its suspenseful and terrifying qualities create a horror story that many say is Stoker’s greatest work. Stoker portrays many peoples’ points of view in presenting the story mostly using diaries and letters. The author’s use of supernatural characters and religious superstitions weave a tale of good versus evil.
The story is set in the late 19th century in Europe. Its characters travel from London, England, to Transylvania, Romania, and a few places in between. Most of the plot takes place in between May 3rd and November 6th the same year, though a specific year is not given. It begins with Jonathan Harker’s journey to Transylvania in order to aid Count Dracula, the antagonist of the story, in his transactions of purchasing real estate in London.
Mina and her close friend Lucy Westenra correspond via letters and soon meet in a town named Whitby where they stay. By that time Dracula has traveled to England. Lucy is then struck by a mysterious disease. Mina travels to her ill husband when she first hears where he was and there they marry once Jonathan heals. Dracula becomes frantic and attacks Mina, starting the process of turning her into a vampire like himself. He then boards a ship to flee back to his home. They split into pairs, each taking a different course in attempt to cut him off and destroy him as quickly as possible. Those that are transporting a sleeping Dracula are within sight of Dracula’s castle when they are cut off.
