It's easy to picture a golf course manager as someone who just makes sure everyone is having a good time playing, but golf course management is actually a complex and challenging career. Anyone who wants to enter this field should understand just how many different hats he or she will be wearing and how many different types of jobs they will be doing to make sure the facility they manage is running smoothly and their customers are happy.
The most obvious focus of the work is Operations; keeping the day to day working of a course, country club or driving range running smoothly. Actual course management is another part of the job that contributes to the success of a facility. It requires knowledge of everything from pest management to course design and renovation to make sure the course is always in peak condition and able to compete successfully with other facilities. Changing environmental requirements must also be a concern for anyone in course management.
There is also a portion of managing that requires the same skill set that is needed to successfully run a fine restaurant or hospitality suite. Food and beverage management is taught at academies as a part of the curriculum so that managers can oversee everything from beverage service at the driving range to catering of weddings and banquets in the dining facilities at the club house. These courses will also cover the essentials of ordering and organizing the preparation of the proper quantities of food for special events and tournaments. The agency I chose to do is the Hillandale golf course, which is located in Durham North Carolina. The reason why I chose to do my project on Hillandale golf course because since the beginning of the semester I have been traveling over to the golf course twice a week for a class learning the rules and the way the game of golf is played. Hillandale golf course is named the “Granddaddy golf course of Durham/ Research Triangle golf”. Hillandale was donated to the Durham area back in 1911 through the philanthropic interests of long-time Durham resident John Sprunt Hill. Donald Ross and Perry Maxwell originally designed the course. Donald Ross had designed the first 9 holes and Perry Maxwell came up with the last 9 holes. Since 1960 over 1.7 million rounds of golf have been played that being an average of 45,000 yearly. This public golf course provides a challenge from each level of players in the game of golf. In 1960, the Hillandale Golf Course was moved to its current location in Durham and was redesigned by George Cobb, who is also the designer of the Surf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
From its initial existence R&D and innovative products had been the lifeline of CGC. When Callaway bought into the company his first initiative was to develop original products. Innovation and superior performing products are important in golf because equipment is thought to have a significant impact on player performance. Moreover, innovation was important because CGC had to be the technological leader to sell its products at premium price and continue to exceed customer expectations. The industry was also characterized as being driven by new product development because manufacturers were trying to bet each other to the next "best club" so CGC had to manufacture products that were differentiated from its own existing products as well as those of its competitors.

The creator of golf along with its origin, the advancement in equipment over the years, and the first golfers and courses are all major things in the history of the game.
The globalization of golf is demonstrated by five different cities: Santiago, Chile; Beijing, China; Nairobi, Kenya; Awali, Bahrain; and Munich, Germany because they all contain golf culture diffused from Scotland even though they are situated in entirely different parts of the world; this particular example of globalization can also be described by the terms: place, region, scale, space, and connections. The origins of golf can be traced back to the 15th century, when a sport resembling golf was first played with a bent stick and a stuffed ball. It is widely accepted that the foundations of golf started in Scotland; one of the oldest and most honored golf clubs, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, is located in Scotland. At
Callaway Golf Company began to take form in 1983, after Ely Reeves Callaway Jr. sold Callaway Vineyard and Winery for a $9 million dollar profit. Shortly after the sell of the winery, Callaway ventured in to the golf equipment industry and bought 50 percent of Hickory Stick USA. Callaway knew from the very beginning that this company’s profits were limited as long as the product line wasn’t changing. “Callaway noticed that most golf equipment had changed very little since the 1920s and believed that , due to the difficulty of the game of golf, recreational golfers would be willing to invest in high-tech, premium-priced clubs if such clubs could improve their game by being more forgiving of a less-than-optimum swing.” (Thompson, c205) Callaway then purchased the company outright and changed the name to Callaway Hickory Stick USA and then hires Richard Helmstetter as the companies’ chief club designer. With the help of five aerospace engineers, Helmstetter developed line of clubs that was set apart form competing brands by its technological innovation. In 1988, the S2H2 was launched as well as another name change to Callaway Golf Company. In 1992, sales are more than double recent years and Callaway Golf Company goes public and begins trading on the NYSE. Throughout the 90’s, Callaway leads the golf equipment industry with ongoing new lines of clubs and eventually adds golfing apparel. Donald Dye, Callaway’s new CEO, took the much of the blame for the downturn in Callaway Golf Company. Dye was ultimately responsible for initiatives that took managements focus off golf clubs. The company’s financial and market performance suffered immensely in 1998 causing Ely Callaway to return to rebuild the company. The textbook states on page c208, “Ely Callaway’s first efforts upon his return to active management at Callaway Golf were to ‘direct resources---talent, energy, and money--- in an ever-increasing degree toward the creation, design, production, sale and service of new and better products.’” In Callaway’s turnaround strategy, he initiated a restructuring program and operational improvements. By the end of 1998, Callaway’s strategies allowed the company to regain it s technological leadership.
Golf. A sport that started out with just a wooden stick and ball, is now a very well know game by many people all around the globe. The sport that also just started out as a way to mess around has become a job for some of the people and is making some golfers millions of dollars each year. A sport that many people spend their whole lives playing or watching used to not be exactly what is today. Even though golf is a very well known sport now, golf has been around for hundreds of years and is played by people all over the world. The sport of golf has been dated all the way back to years before 1,000 and has kept growing exponentially ever since. According to the International Golf Federation, they have 144 different countries a part of the organization, leaving out 51. The game of golf is played at many different levels all the way from junior tournaments, all the way to professional events. The evolution of the sport of golf is made up of a couple main things. These two main things are how golf got its start, and what has changed about the game.
Many great golf players use golf psychology to help them win major tournaments. They knew they were very talented, but needed to score a little bit better and become more consistent to achieve an elite level. Buying more expensive equipment was not the secret and neither was practicing to the point of sheer exhaustion. It has to do with the proven scientific discipline of psychology and changing your way of thinking. It helps you over come the pressure associated with tournament play and coping with a constant barrage of questions from fans and the media. It only takes a short time to change your thinking so you can start winning.
In the second year of business at Golf Challenge Corporation the company is struggling. The cost of their inventory is rising, and they are in grave danger of losing their bank loan (their prime source of financing) due to not meeting the required financial ratios agreed and set forth by the bank at the time the loan was given. The owner comes up with a solution, and figures that instead of using Last in-First out (LIFO) the company can use First in-First Out inventory cost system (FIFO) and meet their required financial ratios set forth by the bank. Ultimately, Golf Challenge Corporation should not submit documents to the bank using FIFO as opposed to their previous system LIFO in order to meet the bank requirements
Golf courses in America hold themselves to a high standard when it comes to maintaining the thick, weed free and lusciously manicured turf in the fairways of their course. There has been increased focus on pesticides on golf courses since the early 1990s. In recent years however, Golf Course managers have began to realize the effect that they were having on the environment, both positive and negative. Many managers have began to consult with local environment experts to maintain their respective courses in a more environmentally conscious manner and some have even gone organic. There are extreme factors that all golf courses must pay attention to in order to have a luscious and visually appealing facility. Chemicals are a huge one. The chemicals used aren’t always bad either. Almost all the news articles and stories related to chemicals and the usage of them on on golf courses are more often than not, pretty negative. Golf course chemicals are seen as extremely volatile toxins to humans, plants and animals when in reality, that is not always the case. According researchers Raymond H. Snyder and George H. Snyder who are professors at the University of Florida, there have been a lot of misconceptions about golf course chemicals.

Today I watched the European Open 2013 Disc golf tournament on Youtube. This tournament took place on August 13, 2013 in Europe. The competitors were Paul McBeth, Will Schusterick, Dave Feldberg, and Jeremy Koling. In the beginning of the tournament Paul threw a 302 and got very close to the birdie. Both Dave and Jeremy hit trees on their first throws and Dave gets near the birdie on his throw. On his third throw Dave is the first person to land his disk in the birdie and Jeremy gets the birdie on his fourth throw. The announcers state that Jeremy is one of the best forehand throwers in the world and that out of the four contestants he is the only one that prefers to throw forehand. The announcers
Golf tourism is spreading rapidly all over the world in places like Asia and Mexico. Although most people who play the sport of golf play because of its interaction with nature, what most golfers do not realize or consider is the damaging environmental impact on the sport. The booming golf trade throughout the world creates a haven for golfers and a nightmare for environmentalists. According to members of the Malaysia-Based Asia-Pacific People’s Environment Network, golf development is becoming one of the most unsustainable and damaging activities to people and the environment (TED Case Studies, 1997).
Ensuring that each department can run smoothly the day of the game. I need to enhance my skills in organization, leadership, and management. Therefore, I would need a class that will help me in at least one of those three aspects. My first option is marketing which is defined as the action or business of promoting and selling products or services. In that class I will be learning the basics of consumer markets, consumer buyer behaviors, successful marketing strategies and how to cater to specific audiences. Taking this class will help me continue to stay current with the new upcoming trends; however, I do not want to sell people items. So I will not attain any of the three aspects I am looking for yet, I will gain additional skills such as being able to sell items to people and pitch information to people. My second elective option would be Public Relations course that will help advance my writing since I will be learning how to write press release, and help plan media campaigns. Having this course will help me directly with my major for off season specifically the management sector. Since I will be the one in charge of releasing out press release, and organizing the press events I would need to know quality work when I see it and be able to give feedback when necessary. However, writing isn’t my strongest point so I may face some difficult in that class meaning I
