College is a great thing, but there are so many alternatives for people who do not want to go to college or for people are not able to go. Everyone should give some thought to college. Some people know right away that college is not for them, and some people have to try it before they truly know. Then there are some people who are completely determined to go to a university and get a four year degree. Regardless of which path people choose to take, that should make people assume how smart or dumb they are. College can do a lot of good for people. Everyone should try to go, or at least give it a considerable amount of thought. Having a degree makes getting a job somewhat easier. For example, vocational trade is a great thing to get into. It takes skill, and dedication to work in a trade job. They put in sixty hour weeks, and work dawn till dusk. Think about it, almost everything is welded, someone has to put in the electrical wiring in houses, and who has to fix cars when they break down or make weird noises? Most people in those trades never go to college, or they just go for two years. Yet, they make significantly more money than someone who does. A person who goes to college, most of the time has to take out so many loans, so even if they do get a good job they are still in debt. Goodwin says, “Workers with two- year degrees in STEM subjects, in fact, have a greater average lifetime earnings than college graduates in most other career areas.” (87) Just like a person has to be dedicated to going to college, another person has to be dedicated to put in all the work for a trade job. Even if someone is not great at a trade that is okay. There are technical schools that will teach from the basics all the way to the advanced classes. As Ellner and Tkaczyk point out in their article technical universities sometimes have partner ships with companies to help students get jobs.
