The fundamental question for the existence of a God who is all good, all knowing and all powerful has been the basis of many philosophical arguments for century’s. To produce such a valid claim, we are forced to argue the existence by way of definition and various types of evil. The evil I am referring to is “something that is the source or cause of suffering, injury or destruction”, as defined in our textbook. There are two types of evil, moral evil which involves the suffering of humans caused by the decisions and actions of humans. Natural evil, suffering of humans that is caused by nature. According to Alvin Plantinga, philosopher and author of GOD, Freedom, and Evil, natural atheology is “the attempt to prove that God does not exist or that at any rate it is unreasonable or irrational to believe he does”. The problem of evil stems from this atheistic approach which simply begs the question, if God exist why does he allow evil? To justify such evil Plantinga refers to a set of 3 premises proposed by philosopher John Mackie: 1) God is all powerful, 2) God is wholly good, 3) evil exist. These three statements provide the basis for proving the inconsistency of believing such a God exist. For the theist, it is impossible for all three of these premises to be true without having a contradiction. For instance, if God is wholly good then he should want to get rid of evil and if God is all powerful then he should be able to rid the world of evil, yet evil still exist. Since evil exist then it must be the case that God does not exist. The fact that evil exist in a universe where an all-powerful God is said to exist is logically inconsistent with the definition of such a being.
