Topic: Explain how globalization has affected your culture. Globalization has taken place in the past when state and empires expanded their influence far outside their border. However, one of the distinctions of globalization today is the speed with which it is transforming local culture as they took part in a worldwide system of interconnectedness. Through globalization, many cultures in the world have changed dramatically. Globalization is the process of international integration arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas and other aspects of culture. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). On the other hand, culture is the values, beliefs, customs and rules that a person learns within a particular society as they grow up. …show more content…
It is the process that controls the way a person behaves in particular situations. However, culture is changed by the processes of diffusion, acculturation, and transculturation. Diffusion occurs when ideas and things are moved from one society to another. Acculturation occurs when strange behaviors or attitudes are introduced into the receiving society and they accept and practice these behaviors. Whereas transculturation, it refers to a person who moves to another society and adapts to its cultural practices. (O'neiil, 1997-2014). So, the relationship between culture and globalization is that, globalization promotes the contact and exchange between cultures within different societies around the world. (Smith, L.). Globalization has affected my culture in various ways. Some of the features of culture that was affected by globalization were language, fashion, hunting and gathering, traditional staple food and architecture. Language is the most powerful means of transmitting culture to the next generation. Each person speaks, communicates and thinks within the limits of a particular language. In the past, our ancestor uses bush materials and trees to build houses. They weave the walls with bamboos and built their roofs with woven leaves or hay. The shape and size of the house depends on the size of the family. If a family has many children, the house built must be big enough to fit everyone. However, globalization has introduced materials such as roofing irons and processed timbers for walls and floors. These materials attracted the people in my village. Some of the people build their houses with these materials because they want to be seen as the highly ranked person in the village so they will be respected in the community. One of the effects of introduced architectural designs is that people lose interest in the traditional material because it might get damaged by pests, unlike the modern materials, the timbers are made in a way that pest or insects cannot attack and damage them. People nowadays find modern methods of construction for building homes more quickly and
Globalization is the process of people of different cultures or countries integrating through interacting through trade or the use of social media. In “Point: Globalization Provides a Better Life for All” By Jennifer Graham, she provides a valid point of view of how globalization has benefited society. “Globalization enriches the human experience through increased cultural and economic integration, which promotes diversity by opening society to new technology, communication and ideas...Moreover, globalization helps to break down discrimination against people on the basis of religious beliefs or race” (Para, 11,13). Globalization has an impact on my lifestyle because I am currently surrounded by technology and different cultural food. With globalization I have access to different foods that I would normally never get to try, also technology has allowed me to gain knowledge about different culture I would normally not know. This results in me being more informed and benefited about the world as a whole because of globalization bringing the different culture of the world so much closer
Globalization has completely changed the face of the world. Altering Production and Distribution, Networks, and Communities drastically. Globalization is the practice of interaction and integration of people worldwide. These articles allow us to overview the effects globalism has had on society. Do you think culture can affect a person’s view to others? Culture includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits brought upon a person. In this essay I have read three different stories on how culture can have a huge impact on someone’s life. In the text “Everyday Use “, “Two Ways to belong in America “and “An Indian Fathers Pleu” these three stories explain how culture affects how people view others. One’s culture can cause them to have disoriented vision towards another.
I would define globalization as the action of interacting and merging between different countries throughout the world. In Mary Pat Fisher`s Living Religions, Professor Manfred Steger defines globalization as “the expansion and intensification of social relations and consciousness across world-time and world-space” (Fisher 18). Globalization has its positive effects. It allows different countries to communicate and discover new cultures. However, globalization has had negative impacts, especially on indigenous societies.
There are many different types of cultures and ways people would react in different situations. When a person thinks of the word culture they start to think of races, places, and states. Culture is in fact a lot more than that, culture is a society’s set of unique patterns, behaviors and beliefs (M.A., Lucas, Social Psychology Sociological Perspectives 3rd edition). Culture can be identified in various ways for example, the way you feel about certain situations or how would one person react differently from the way they grew up environmentally or religiously. The way a person was raised environmentally, physically, and spiritually all have an effect on other cultures. The way a person would normally act would no longer act that way due to the actions of the past. Different cultures affect other cultures in almost any way possible.
Globalization is defined as “the historical process involving a fundamental shift or transformation in the spatial scale of human social organization that links distant communities and expands the reach of power relations across regions and continents (Baylis, 2014).”
In relation to culture, globalisation integrates the ideas, norms, values and behaviours that the different cultures in the world have (Cole, 2015). An example of globalisation within culture would be the diverse range of different ethnic food in supermarkets. Relating to the economy, globalisation is the development of businesses or other organisations that help integrate the world into one economic system (Revise Sociology, 2016). Socially, globalisation aims to integrate the world as a whole, which is done through many agents. An example of this may be the use of social media such as Facebook and Instagram, as It is connecting people together from different
This process is marked by the common consumption of cultures that have been diffused by the popular culture media, internet and international travel. The circulation of cultures enables individuals to partake in extended social relations that cross national and regional borders. Cultural globalization involves the formation of shared norms and knowledge with which people associate their individual and collective cultural identities. It brings increasing interconnectedness among different populations and
Culture is the gradual accumulation of a region’s people’s habits and is unique to them and them only. Culture consist of the people’s artifacts, signs, logos, language and practices. Generally, this aspect is what makes a region or country more attractive in terms of tourism. Globalization has provided a platform for the cultural aspects of a country to diffuse to other parts of the world because this process increases the interaction between countries throughout the world. With advancements in technologies such as telecommunications and transportation, the opportunity for tourism and the entertainment industry to reach larger areas is increased.
Culture refers to the collection of values, customs, and attitudes of a group of people belonging to certain area, country or a place. It shapes individuals’ habits, knowledge, experiences, and their perspectives. It is important to avoid ethnocentricity since it creates a bias in which, one views their own culture to be superior over other cultures. In the age of globalization, such single-minded bias can prove to be costly as it can lead to undermining positive characteristics of other cultures. This in return can create negative relationship with citizens from other cultures as well as their governments.
Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. Globalization results in the expansion of international, cultural, economic, and political activities. As people, ideas, knowledge, and goods move easily around the globe, the experiences of people around the world become more similar. (“Definition of Globalization“, n.d., ¶ 1)
