To fulfill my expectation to give back to the community, I plan to continue my work with the service learning organization D.E.U.C.E.S, in my neighborhood of Brownsville, Brooklyn. D.U.E.C.E.S. mission is to increase community involvement and engagement, through providing children and teenagers with programs and activities that ensures that students are engaged in positive practices, providing voter registration and voter information to the community, and voicing the concerns of the neighborhood to our legislators and community leaders. My values align heavily with D.U.E.C.E.S. mission to protect, inform, and advocate for our community, where there is an immense lack of positive reinforcements and programs for us. Community service, its programs and facilitators and necessary for children and teenagers, who don’t receive the necessary mentoring or support from the people and institutions who are supposed to support them. There are also important for adults who need the support of programs to enlighten them on the resources available to help them in their everyday life, and to feel like they have a future and stake in their neighborhood. Finally, it is important for senior citizens who have served and supported their communities, and need engaging programs and activities to show them that they are appreciated. Community service is personally important to me because it grounds me, and allows me to serve the community that supported me in my ambitions. I think it’s important to give back, especially when you are in college and can provide knowledge and information that is not available for everyone in the same community.
