Giovanni de Verrazano was a famous explorer who would meet an unsuspecting death. He was an Italian explorer who set sail for France, who intended to find a passage in North America to the Pacific Ocean and Asia. Giovanni de Verrazano is one of the most notable explorers of his time, he was very notable and respected for his vast knowledge in mapmaking, especially on the North American east coast. This is very important because his mapping would be very helpful for other explorers voyaging to the Americas.

One problem would be that the ships Santa Maria and Vittoria would be lost at sea during a storm. The two remaining ships Delfina and Normanda would then face confrontations with other Spanish ships, resulting in only the Delfina to sai on into the New World. Giovanni’s main goal during his voyage was to find a passage through the Americas to reach the Pacific Ocean and later on Asia. After sailing for fifty days after the attack of the Spanish ships, Giovanni’s men finally spotted land, which was thought to be Cape Fear, North Carolina. Upon seeing this piece of land, Giovanni would end up steering his ship south towards the southern tip of Florida. After reaching Florida, he then headed back north up the eastern coastline, never losing sight of the land. After sailing north for quite some time, the Delfina would finally enter the Bay of New York on April 17, 1524. While entering the bay, he would eventually come to the southern tip of Manhattan, which is where he would need to land to let a storm pass. After the storm, he would later sail into what is now known as Newport, Rhode Island. While staying in Newport, Giovanni and his men would interact with the local Native Americans. He and his men would also travel inland for a little before restocking on supplies and sailed off once again. After leaving Newport, Giovanni would sail up towards Maine, he wouldn’t be able to make landfall because the local Native American population would drive him off the land. After the Maine incident, Giovanni would finally sail up to Newfoundland to resupply and head back to France. Giovanni would reach Dieppe, France on July 8, 1524.
