Christopher Columbus’s historic voyage across the Atlantic is known by nearly everyone in the west, and the results of his exploration changed the world in ways no one ever had. A new world was discovered, and with that, Christopher Columbus was immortalized because of his shot in the dark, but what if he had been fortunate enough to possess more advanced tools for transportation and navigation? How would the outcome of the now legendary voyage have changed? During the late fifteenth century, navigation was largely based off of physical maps and astronomy, and ships travelled at a fraction of the speed ships do now. Still, Christopher Columbus managed to safely lead a small fleet of ships across the Atlantic, but there was a problem that he never anticipated. In a bid to find easier passage into the far east, Columbus discovered the Americas. If he had been blessed with the navigational technology of the twenty-first century, it would have been evident to Columbus and his crew that he was not in the far east but in a new land altogether. A little known fact about Columbus’s 1492 voyage is that he never actually landed on the continent of North America. He actually landed on an island in the Caribbean. He could have had a phone or a radio to stay in constant contact with the Spanish government, and upon the discovery of the Americas, he could have made a request for the Spanish government to send more officials to colonize the land. Of course, if this technology existed in this timeline, a means of receiving phone calls and radio signals would be required, so the British, French, and the Portuguese would have been aware of Americas’ existence as soon as the Spanish were.
