America gives people freedoms that not all countries offer to all of their citizens. The first gift America gives to my generation is education. America has given every child that lives within its boundaries, the opportunity to have a public education paid for by taxpayers. In some other countries the schooling is privatized or are only offered to certain groups. Girls are often one of the groups of people who are not always allowed to go to school. Fifty-three percent of people who do not have a formal education are girls. I am part of the Cambridge program which is a program for gifted students in middle school. The program is sponsored by Cambridge University in England and costs the district a lot of money to sponsor. The district does
America’s public school system started off very rough, but through the dedication of many hard-working Americans, it was starting to shape into a system that allowed all children, regardless of race, gender, religion, or nation of origin, to have an education.
America. It was a dream come true in a New World that was envisioned by artists, politicians, and monarchs alike. The ones who believed that anything could be achieved by God, the mind, and manpower. Even through opposition from governments, kingdoms, nobles, and naysayers, these brave individuals strived to establish a better life for themselves and their families, aimed to retain a secure future in the process, and wanted to worship God in their own way.
A key to ending the cycle of poverty, is educational equity. In America today, public education is unequal racially and socioeconomically (Honda 11). Internationally, America is not excelling academically. When looking closely at American student’s Program for
After watching the Teach Us All documentary on Netflix, it opened my eyes to many of the issues regarding educational inequality. The study looked at schools in Little Rock, New York City, and Los Angeles to show us the current state of U.S. education and how far we have come since the school desegregation crisis. The thesis of this documentary is that since the efforts of the Little Rock Nine, our belief is that educational inequality has improved when in reality, it hasn’t improved and the actions of our country have had negative effects. Teach Us All emphasizes the need for unity and collective action to improve our education system for the kids in poor communities that are in the most need. Our country has devoted all the resources to the middle and upper class for education and are taking money away from where it needs to
Should you be rewarded with a better education just because you were lucky enough to be born into the right family? Is being punished with a mediocre education for something you had no control over fair? Shouldn’t all Americans receive the same education from public schools? Most Americans would agree that all public schools should offer the same opportunities to all students no matter what neighborhood or race the students are. In many schools today a major problem is that the students are not the ones, failing, but actually the teachers failing the students. Even though the movie Lean on Me highlights the negatives in our school system, the lack of funding making teachers jobs harder, lack of motivation to
America is a place that encourages children to grow up and be independent. From what we
America now knows where they stand on the totem pole regarding education. Having a powerful military and democratic government will only get Americans so far as being a world leader. Teaching American students rigorously will increase America’s dominance as a country and as a people for generations. Teachers are an essential need in America. The United States often takes teachers for granted and if the U.S. government helps educators by improving the quality of their teaching, students will succeed in the classroom. America can perhaps no longer be a country with a zombie-like attitude, but a country thriving with accomplished students supported by the community around them.
In chapter one of “The American Dream and Public Schools”, written by Jennifer L. Hochschild and Nathan Scovronick, it talks about education and What Americans Want from Public Schools. The American Dream for education is meant for everyone to be successful but there are more obstacles that will stop someone from reaching their success due to their race, gender, or class. President Clinton this way: “The American dream that we were all raised on is a simple but powerful one— if you work hard and play by the rules you should be given a chance to go as far as your God-given ability will take you. (Page 10)” Society feels that if the schools were teaching the students the way of the American Dream for education, then more of the students would be able to reach that American Dream and achieve their goals in becoming successful. It’s also up to the individual to take advantage of their education to be
Have you ever been outside of your own country? I have had the privilege to go outside of our country, and travel to Jamaica. America’s gift to my generation is the privileges, we have in America. We are so used to having these privileges that we take them for granted.
Being an American citizen is a great privilege and I am thankful to be an American. The United States of America is the greatest Country in the World and is founded on the principles of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” As an American Citizen you are able to enjoy these rights and privileges. Yet I wonder if most teenagers like myself realize these rights we enjoy, also come with personal responsibility. My responsibility to America is a broad topic to cover but one that I feel strongly about.
I can’t even start on the amount of gifts that America has given to my generation, but the most important one to me is and always will be our freedom. I love freedom because it simply means what it says. It means we are free to choose what we are gonna do in the morning, night, and afternoon. It means we can choose what we are gonna do when we grow up, what job we take on, and who we support or who we don’t. We get to say our mind on any topic no matter our opinion on it. We get to live our own life exactly how we want to as long as we work for it.
Schooling and education in the past were only attended and given to rich, wealthy people and males. In the Greek education system, only males were given the opportunity to go to school, while the women and slaves stayed home and worked. Education in America has some of the average test scores and lower grades in the world, and there are many problems with the system itself. According to a poll taken by registered voters, lack of school choices wasn’t a very big issue compared to the number of votes that said that absence of parental involvement and budget cuts were. When students graduate from high school, there is a good portion that are not fully ready for college. There are at least twenty things that are very important skills in life that
The debatable education system of The United States of America is unlike that of many other countries. The U.S. does not offer free education at the higher levels which include a college education or specialization education. Whether or not national education should be obtainable at no expense has been controversial since education has been offered in general. Those who have called for free education may be oblivious to the freedoms and values that would suffer as a result. Philosophers like John Locke and Thomas Hobbes, argued for and against the liberal rights and freedoms that we, as humans, have learned to incorporate into education today. Though the Constitution does not blatantly state that Education is a right, the tenth amendment reads,
Horace Mann, an advocate of American public education declared that "education...beyond all other devices of human origin, is a great equalizer of conditions of men—the balance-wheel of the social machinery…It does better than to disarm the poor of hostility toward the rich; it prevents being poor."(Mann 3) All americans do not see education as being equal. Several different views come into place when equal opportunity is thought. Some factors like, finance, environment, a social background may play a part. When looking at public schools, elementary and high school are free for all who wants to attend, except when pursuing a college degree, the responsibility lies on the student. Paying for college is not always an option when thinking about all the other responsibilities in life. Another factor may be there are not enough qualified teachers, resources, and funds that are available through government resources to obtain a good education. Whatever the reason, we must do our part. Education can be a "great equalizer" if curriculum’s was designed to fits the need in all communities.
In America everyone has the right to a free public education. States set standards for schools in an attempt at ensuring all students get the same quality education. No matter how many standards are set, students will not have equal schooling. Schooling is larger then the lessons taught in the classroom. Each student’s school experience is different, not only because of the quality of their education but because of things like school location, demographic, teachers, participation, and other person experiences. My school experience has helped define me as a person and has helped guide me through life.
