Germany’s involvement in the Spanish Civil War Analyze how the Spanish Civil War aided Germany in developing its international relations and enhancing its war strategies during WWII? The Spanish Civil War was caused by the political unrest of the 19th Century and the opposing political ideologies of the Communists and Nationalists. In 1936, this political unrest reached its breaking point, when many of Spain’s military commanders staged a coup to overthrow the left-wing government. Francisco Franco, leader of Spain’s right-wing Nationalist rebels, called out to foreign powers for assistance in fighting the war that ensued. International help was crucial to keeping Franco’s resistance effort alive. After pleas for help by the Nationalist …show more content…
Germany wished to establish an ally that would provided beneficial resources and aid if Germany ever needed assistance in future wars. Hilter was motivated to establish “another authoritarian, right-wing regime on the border of his great enemy, France”( C.J. …show more content…
From precision bombing to combined arms tactics, the Spanish Civil War played a crucial role in developing and enhancing Germany’s military power. As German sociologist, Franz Borkenau, argues in his eye-witness account of what many historians describe as Germany’s “dress rehearsal for WWII”, the Spanish Civil War became “largely a non-spanish affair” (297, The Spanish Cockpit). Germany used the unrest in Spain to advance its own war agenda. By helping Franco rise to power, Hitler secured a strategic ally that would serve him well in WWII, as a source of needed raw materials and military assistance. Without Hitler, Franco’s Nationalist Movement would have folded to Spain’s more established Communist Party. Germany’s involvement in Spain was not only crucial to the Nationalist’s victory but to preparing Germany for a full-fledged European War. Germany’s involvement in Spain from 1936 until 1939 bolstered Hitler’s power and ambitions, setting the stage for WWII, which broke out within months of Franco becoming ruler of Spain. Hitler and Franco shared a desire for power, and they helped each other achieve their
Francisco Franco (1892-1975) was a lifelong military leader. He rose through the ranks until the early 1930s, when he found himself, a right-wing monarchist, in the middle of a left-wing republic. He was demoted, but later rose up again, and by 1935 he had been named chief of staff of the Spanish Army, a position he used to get rid of left-wing figures and their military institutions. When the left- wing social and economic structure of Spain began to fall, Franco joined the rebellion. He soon led an uprising and took control of Spain after the Spanish Civil War (1939). From then unti...
The Spanish-American war was the first and biggest step that the United States of America took toward imperialism. It was the war that secured the US as the most powerful country in the world. This war was a benefit to the USA because we gained land, gained respect, and taught a lesson to one of our enemies. In addition to this, the losses that we suffered were almost nothing compared to other conflicts or wars. The Spanish-American war was by no means for the sole purpose of gaining land and respect, the United States freed an oppressed country and took pieces of land that were better off under US control.
Hitler made a number of Military actions that can be attributed to him being the major cause of World War Two. The two main actions are the rearmament of Germany and the assistance his country provided in the Spanish Civil War. Hitler secretly began the rearmament of the German armed forced in 1932, this was in direct violation of The Treaty of Versailles. “Navy: 30 warships (1932) - 95 (1939) Air Force: 36 Aircraft (1932) - 8,250 (1939) Soldiers: 100,000 men (1932) - 950,000 (1939)” These statistics show a dramatic increase in the military power that Germany had. The increase in strength gave Hitler more confidence and power over other countries most importantly Germany’s smaller neighbours. “Hitler felt confident enough to publicly announce that there would be compulsory military conscription in Nazi Germany and that the army would be increased to 550,000 men.” The reintroductio...
The invasion of Poland by Germany in September 1939 is regarded as the trigger that unleashed the Second World War. After an analysis and study of the causes of the conflict, from my point of view I consider that the depiction of hostilities that would trigger this great war were developed long before and were only a matter of time before this war began. I consider it this way, because Germany as the defeated nation of the World War I, in which the victorious nations, imposed conditions within which Germany ceded part of its territory and its colonies, reduce its army and pay annual compensation to the victorious nations.
Hi I'm doing my report on the Spanish American War. In the following pages I will be giving information on how and why the war started, major battles, and the results of the war. I will also include stories from people on the battleship Maine.
World War I was a very complicated war. It goes back as far back as 1870. Of course the was didn’t last for that many years, but it had many casues. Not just one spark that started it off. The Franco-Prussian War was one of these casues. There were sevral Franco-Prussian Wars. The last Franco-Prussian War started in 1870. Prussia was in a confederation. A confederation is a group of states that are loosly joined together and have more power than the government of the whole country. Prussia was the biggest state. France and Prussia always fought over Alsace-Lorraince. It was land with very rich soil. It was on the border between France and Prussia. They kept fighting over the land. One time Prussia would win and would take the land. The the next time France would win and would take the land. This kept happening, but in the last war, which started in 1870, Germany finally won Alsace-Lorraine. They signed a treaty in Versailles, France. The Franco-Prussian War ended in 1871. After the Franco-Prussian War, Bismarck, who was Prussia’s leader made the unification of Germany. That meant that all the separate states joined together to be one counrty. After this, Bismarck became the leader of Germany.
Unlike many other countries during this period, Nazi Germany objected the theory of Communism. As Communism spread throughout Europe, so did the fear of a leftist revolution. For this reason, many people responded by putting their faith in Hitler and his policies. In 1933, the Reichstag building was set on fire. Hitler reacted by blaming the event on Communists, in order to gain supporters for him. Additionally, Hitler used propaganda during the “Red Scare” to convince people to join the fascist movement. On November 25, 1935, Hitler signed the Anti-Comintern Pact with Italy and Japan, aimed against the Third International and designed to prevent communism from spreading. These actions taken by...
Actions taken in Cuba and the Philippines could not and did not give equal weight as a motive to commercialism, nationalism, humanitarianism, and racism. Trade and business in the United States motivated the war. The US also wanted to emerge as an imperialistic power and saw a great opportunity to take over other lands. In analyzing all of the facts, it is clear that nationalism, the desire to be a world wide power, and advance commercial interests were the primary factors that led to the declaration of war on Spain.
Benito Mussolini, was the Head of Government of Italy and Duce of Fascism also he was the prime minister of Italy; he said “Blood alone moves the wheels of history.” (World War II Tributes) Mussolini was saying that blood has many affects on American History because there were too many battles going on in the past and for those more to go. The battle of the Bulge started off with Hitler’s men who attacked the American positions on Elsensborn Ridge and Losheim Gap attempting to break through to Liège. Americans said that this battle was probably the bloodiest battle in America. The battle of the Bulge began on December 16th 1944; Hitler thought that he could take over the alliance from Britain, France, and America so he decided launching a massive attack on American forces. Many risked their lives and this was also a very bloody battle. In many cases there were a lot of people that did not know that the battle was a very bloody. The conflict of the Battle of the Bulge was very sentimental also at the same time it was very aggressive, many people lost their lives fighting over a mistake one man caused. If Hitler wouldn’t have came up with the idea of trying to take control of many countries then there wouldn’t have been men dying in this battle.
The United States would declare war with Spain on April 25, 1898. This act of war would throw the entire Western part of the world into conflict. The Spanish-American war would start because of a attack on the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor in February of 1898. The ship would sink taking American lives with it. As a direct result of this war, Spain would lose its influence in what remained of its empire in the west. War would come to a halt following the Treaty of Paris which was signed on December 10, 1898. In this essay we will explore the days leading to the war, key battles, key leaders, and what would happen to Spain’s overseas empire following the Treaty of Paris agreement.
The Spanish-American War began in 1898 when the United States congress approved President McKinley’s declaration of war on Spain after the explosion of the symbolic U.S.S. Maine in the Havana harbor of Cuba, and the loss of many American lives; the assumption was that Spain purposely blew up the American ship that was there to return Americans from Cuba to the United States. America also declared war on Spain because it was not able to control peace or stability in any of its countries, there were many Americans living in Cuba complaining about the brutal treatment by Spain, and because the United States had a stable economic relationship with Cuba, so it didn’t want Cuba’s economy to be ruined or its association with the country to collapse. However, Spain was already receiving revolts from the countries it possessed and imposed rule over long before the war with the United States began. The significance of this war was that Spain was treating the people in countries such as Cuba and the Philippines very brutally, and America wanted to remain neutral and did not want to join the conflict. However, as time passed and battleships and soldiers were deployed to help regulate conflict in these countries American aid was attacked and these actions angered America and caused for the declaration of war. A few main factors that are believed to have caused the Spanish-American War include: U.S. support and sympathy of Cuban independence, the commercial business interest the U.S. had in Cuba, and the attack of the U.S. battleship, U.S.S. Maine. Interpretations regarding historians and their thoughts on the causes of the Spanish-American War include economic interests, imperialist desires, and sympathy for Cuba and the Philippines. The U.S...
In 1937 Hitler helped the Spanish. Dictator, Franco, who showed the nation how big his army was. that he had a large quantity of ready-made, fully working weapons. In March 1938 he demanded that Austria should be joined with Germany. This would make Germany stronger and have a bigger population.
There were many causes for the Franco-Prussian War, which was fought between the French and the Prussians (Germany) with a few German states; most importantly Bavaria,
Adolf Hitler, the commander of the Third Reich, determined to make Germany the strongest power in Europe. In order to do so, Hitler must unite all German ethnic groups, deploy aggressive policies and defeat communism. These actions all would defy the Treaty of Versailles; Thus, Hitler’s desire ultimately led to the outbreak of the Second World War.
