Chris Hedges and George Monbiot both share similar ideas to express their views on celebrities and the consumer culture which, surrounds us almost every second of the day in our lives. Albeit, they do have similarities they also have differences and express their ideas in a slightly unique way from one another. Whether or not we choose to interact or pay attention to that part of society it is still there regardless if we try to ignore it. Nevertheless, both of these writers try to enlighten us on consumer and celebrity culture and how they can sometimes be detrimental to individuals in society. First, I will examine and explain Chris Hedges’ text, then I would do the same for George Monbiot and his text.
Basketball was created and has been played since December 1891 (Griffiths, 2010), it is a game of skill and talent that is enjoyed by fans all over the world. There are numerous leagues, but the two main leagues are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NCAA is considered amateur where the players are not paid, and the NBA is considered professional where players make millions of dollars. In order for the NBA to get their players they draft from the NCAA, but the rules have changed several times over the years that have permitted players to enter the NBA. The current rule states that NBA players must be one year removed from high school or 19 years of age (Article X, 2008), this rule is considered by many needing the most change.

I read the book Brian’s Return by Gary Paulsen. I thought it was a very great and interesting book, because it involved wildlife and nature, two things I enjoy. Brian realizes that life outside of the woods isn't for him. After many failed attempts at trying to live in the city he decides he was better off living in the wild where he belongs. After many counseling sessions with Caleb, Brian decides to make a list of all of the items he needs to be prepare to move back to the wild. I thought Brian was really brave for only being a sixteen year old boy going to live in the wild, and this is his story.

“If you've ever had that feeling of loneliness, of being an outsider, it never quite leaves you. You can be happy or successful or whatever, but that thing still stays within you.” As a child, Tim Burton was an introvert who was shy, quirky, creative, and didn’t blend well within the social crowds of his hometown. Just like his years of youth, his style and his memorable characters are misfits that don’t fit into any category. Having a child-like horror sense, the movies Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Big Fish all exhibit Burton’s unique style. In order to portray his style Tim Burton uses the cinematic techniques of shot-reverse-shot, flashback, and low angle.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a famous philosopher, once said “I prefer liberty with danger than peace with slavery.” What Rousseau means by this is that it is better to have fought for your freedom than to peacefully allow yourself to become a slave. In George Orwell’s 1984, a man name Winston Smith struggles with a society that has allowed itself to become enslaved by it’s totalitarian government, whose leader is known as “Big Brother”. Big Brother has convinced his people that to truly be safe, they must be monitored completely. The people of Oceania are entirely stripped of their freedom, and even thinking of rebelling is a crime, a “thoughtcrime”. Winston’s problems arise as he realizes he is not like most people around him, he does not like the society he is living in and wants to take down Big Brother. Winston soon meets a girl named Julia who dislikes Big Brother as well, and soon they begin to commit a wide variety of crimes together. They begin a forbidden love affair, but worry constantly about being caught. As Winston’s love for Julia grows, so does his hatred for Big Brother. Winston soon receives word that a man named O’Brien wants to see him, which excites him because Winston believes that O’Brien is a member of a secret party called The Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is the only glimpse of opposition towards Big Brother that Winston has seen. Winston and Julia go to see O’Brien and are indoctrinated into The Brotherhood. Things take a turn for the worse when Julia and Winston are snatched up and taken to a place called The Ministry of Love, where Winston finds out that O’Brien was actually a spy who tricked him into openly opposing Big Brother. Winston is then tortured until he is mentally broken and no longer attached to J...

Almost every student, at one point, has participated or will participate in an extracurricular activity, whether it be athletic, academic, artistic, or altruistic. Through these activities, students learn valuable life skills and build friendships that last a lifetime. However, a large amount of students do not receive these numerous benefits as they do not participate in extracurricular activities. For this reason, the principal has decided to mandate at least one extracurricular activity for all students. I strongly agree with this decision because extracurricular activities increase academic performance, keep students out of trouble and improve social and mental health.
