Geology relates to my major, which is communication, because geologists have to accurately communicate geological information carefully using verbal and nonverbal methods. Communication involves the exchange of information, as well as connections and interactions between people. Communication can be written or oral. In fact, communication is a vital part to the continuous evolution of society. Geologists have to convey the correct messages. Failure to effectively and accurately communicate messages will reduce the efficacy of the information being provided. Geologists have to pay attention to and deal with very intricate details of fossils, rocks, bones, earth processes, and lots of other geologic events. Geologists can detect the age of fossils, tell the processes rocks have gone through, and they do all this through close observation. Through extensive observation, they must communicate with each other to share these findings and that is how conclusions are reached. Communication must be a well thought-out part of a geological investigation because if the correct message is not understood properly, the consequences of wrong observations and …show more content…
I am from Mississippi, specifically from the Mississippi Delta. Since the land in the Delta is relatively flat, we do not have any major Earth Processes. In the Mississippi Delta we are just really big on farming. The Mississippi Delta is the cotton capital of the world. We are known for our rich soil and mass production of cotton. Many Mississippians make their livings by farming and producing crops. Farmers in the Delta also burn fields and try to rejuvenate their fields for crop production. When they burn fields they release harmful substances into the air. In the Delta there is also lots of air pollution. In the Delta, air pollution is caused by cars and fuel, and as an environment, we must also work together to rejuvenate our
I have lived in Mississippi all my life and have had the opportunity to travel throughout the state. In doing so, I have observed several things that are important in this discussion. They are the music, the people, and the resources. First, it is important to know a few facts concerning the resources of the state. The state gets its name from the Mississippi River, which flows along the western boundary of the state.
For this research paper, I chose to discuss the Louisiana air quality and its effects on the community. I was raised here in Baker, Louisiana which is north of Baton Rouge. Growing up I noticed something very striking and odd. We are overly exposed to chemical plants and their outputs. Driving around Baton Rouge at night and seeing a distant flame I often wonder what it really was. I wonder how this was affecting the community. How was this affecting our health? Upon doing research, I discovered it is called upset emissions. Upset emissions are unplanned events which release VOCs into the air. The Bucket Brigade which is an anti-energy group refers to emissions as accidents. Every year they release an annual report which gives information on the State of Louisiana air quality. A group called Energize LA made a rebuttal against the report. They argued that the Bucket Brigade facts were inaccurate. The views of both will be explained in detail. For this research paper, there will be a discussion on the upset emission effects on communities and health. As well how it correlates to the previous class discussions on the Clean Air Act.
Most people know Mississippi for its music such as; gospel, blues, jazz music, and rock and roll. But it is much more than the creator of blues it is much deeper than that. Mississippi wasn’t Mississippi at first it was discovered by European travelers. The first major European expedition into the territory that became Mississippi was that of Hernando Desoto to who passed through in 1540. Another part of Mississippi was claimed by the French. They claimed territory that included Mississippi as part of their colony of New France and started settlement. Did you know a lot of Mississippi’s counties and parts are named after Indian tribes that were here hundreds of years ago? They included the Natchez, the Yazoo, the Pascagoula, and the Biloxi. Hundreds of years ago Mississippi was controlled by a lot of people. On December.10, 1817, the western portion of Mississippi territory became the state of Mississippi, the 20th state of the union. A lot of people think that Jackson was always the state capital it wasn’t. Natchez was the capital of Mississippi first; the capital was moved to Jacks...
In 1969, the Cuyahoga River (in Cleveland, Ohio) caught on fire because it was “polluted from decades of industrial waste.” Furthermore, after the river set on fire for the final time, the government of Cleveland stepped in to stop the factories’ water runoff into the river. They no longer allowed the factories to have overflow into the river, Although the main problem was fixed for the present, another problem was creeping up: runoff from large industrial farms. Pollution is a serious matter, because if our world gets polluted, it will no longer be safe or healthy to live. The way people eat has a big part in pollution. If they eat locally, or at least try to, they can help cut down on out pollution. The method of Local Sustainable farming
Extreme rates of poverty became a major issue in the city and still continues to be one today. According to the Brookings Institution’s 2010-2014 census data, 40% of the population live below the poverty line, making that the most in one city in the United States. Problems arose like water issues, people were unable to pay their bills, but the city could not afford to pay people to turn off the water supply. With the growing poverty rate, there was also a lot of high school drop outs. The education system is in pieces and continues to have many financial struggles. The have been some actions taken to raise money for the school. Nevertheless, everything from the principles to the teachers needs reform. Detroit’s land also suffered from the urban decay. It was left in ruins when the automotive companies moved out, empty manufacturing buildings and lots of trash from the factories. These sites are an extreme hazard to the people living in Detroit (Thomason 1-4). “The EPA has said that more than 40,000 contaminated parcels have been forfeited to the city for failure to pay taxes.” (Thomason 2) The chemicals are known to cause many health problems such as cancer and asthma. People are debilitated by these health issues and require more medical assistance. This makes it almost impossible those in poverty to make enough money to get themselves out of poverty because of medical costs, and the city in unable to pay for the clean-up because they need to focus in on paying for education and other public services that are necessary in
Geologist are the people that are investigating, observing measuring and collecting data about the earth's surface and layers. A great example in the article state that “ We explain to the students that they will conduct their own scientific exploration by “drilling” into the cake, using a rolled piece of transparency taped into a coring device” said pretend geologist (who is the teacher in the activity). This is such a great way to expose students to what geoloiset do and having their very own geologist show them that they are going to be drilling into their own cakes. This connection that these students are getting through this activity are great, learning about geologist and what they do in a normal day and how they can drill into their own earth (which is their cake
Becoming a geochemist requires rigorous education and training in a variety of fields. For entry-level positions in geochemistry, a bachelor’s level degree is required in many majors, which take up at least four years of study. Many majors of choice of aspiring geochemists i...
Plate tectonics is the theory that landmasses on tectonic plates are in slow constant movement due to convection currents in the mantle. Plate tectonics, or the movements of plates above the lithosphere (the most upper layer of earth's crust) can cause divergent, convergent, and transform boundaries.A boundary the way two tectonic plates collide. is Continental plates are plates that the continents are formed on. Oceanic plates are plates that the ocean covers, and the oceans form on top of these plates. Convergent boundaries and divergent boundaries are ways that these oceanic and continental plates interact with each other. Landforms are formed at boundaries. The landforms formed at boundaries depends on the type of plates that collide, and
Geology is a great profession because it has so many areas and branches. There is something for anything that you are interested in regarding the Earth and/or it's history. Geologists get to travel to cool places and see cool things. They are paid to spend time in remote and beautiful locations. They are not stuck in one place, because they work in the field, the laboratory, and the office. Being a geologist comes with a lot of work and responsibility, but there are so many rewarding aspects that it is completely worth it.
The world we live in today is always changing, whether it be technology or the land. As these changes take place, society must adapt to them. Many things begin to change as a result of this and society beings to turn into something completely different. One of the most overlooked changes that takes place is that of the environment and landscape. The landscape is one of the most important parts of our society’s culture and has a great effect on how we live. It seems that nowadays, many individuals are taking advantage of the land and nothing appreciating it for every thing that it is worth. Its true that not everyone is going to look at the environment and landscape in the same way, however that is no excuse to disrespect it. Then again, a whole new argument can start from that, as different individuals are going to have different views on what disrespecting the land. Many positive things have come from taking advantage of the land, and also, there have been many negative things to come as a result of this. It all depends on how you look at it. One thing is for sure though, no matter what the case is, the land and environment we live in plays a huge part in each of our everyday lives.
