A stable home background with parents positively encouraging their child’s best education is one of the most important factors necessary for a child’s academic success. Parents are perhaps the biggest influences on a child or student’s life. When it comes to education, parents are able to positively and negatively encourage a child in school. In Geoffrey Canada’s Baby College they emphasized parental communication and involvement as key factors in a child’s future and his theory proves to be correct through the study (Tough 37). Today similar programs such as the Triple P, Positive Parenting Program, exist to emphasize parental intervention in a child’s life. The Positive Parenting Program is tailored for high risk, or first-time parents in …show more content…
The program is one of the most popular in the world and has been helping families for over 35 years. Funding is generally funded by research facilities around the world and the United States and Australian governments. The Triple P aims to increase the knowledge, skills, and confidence or parents by offering positive parenting programs and strategies in order to implement them (Sanders, Matthew R., et al. 337). Some of these strategies include incorporating discipline, love, and guidance to keep children get on track. Parents who go through the program often see an improvement in their children’s behavior and their own parenting style (Martínez-González, Raquel-Amaya, et al. 112). The environment parents create for their children will influence a child’s not only academic future, but their entire life as well and the Triple P aims to help with just that. Ultimately, Triple P helps create a stable home with parents positively encouraging, disciplining, and caring their children, which is one of the most important factors that is necessary for a child’s academic …show more content…
One mother explains how the program helped her family achieve an easier life with well-behaved children, “Triple P showed us ways to control the behavior and taught us that getting into a routine would make our lives easier and better. It all sounded so simple and the best part was that once we put into practice what we were taught at each session, it did actually work” (Read What...)! Oftentimes families are able to reconstruct their household by using the 17 strategy program. Families are thankful for the program; “From the bottom of my heart, thank you! I'm convinced that I'm a different person now and a different mother, compared to what I was eight weeks ago (Read What…). In terms of research, Triple P produces a predictable decline in child behavior which typically remains constant throughout childhood (de Graaf, Ireen, et al. 565). The results from Ireen Graaf’s study found that the programs “interventions improved the parenting styles and the competencies of parents and were sustained over time and even increased long-term”. In a separate study, parents reported increased self-esteem, assertiveness, and a more positive outlook on their own life after taking part in the program (Martínez-González, Raquel-Amaya, et al. 115). Triple P has managed to help improve the stability of households. Children who experience family stability have parents who remain constant, consistent, and
Parental Education has also been shown to have a positive effect on children’s return to education see (Oreopoulos et al 2003, Chevalier 2004, Black et al 2005 and Maurin and McNally 2008). All these studies aimed to find the causal impact of the parents education on the child’s outcomes.
One of the primary causes of a failing education system is the insufficient amount of support from parents to improve education. For instance, majority of parents who send their children to impoverished schools are not playing an active role in their children’s education. Consequently, there are many factors that keep parents away from supporting their children’s educational needs. Parents may be working more than one job to maintain a roof...
Previously, I had gained some of my knowledge of parenting strategies and styles from family and other classes I have taken in the family and child studies department. Over the course of this semester, I have been introduced to even more parenting strategies, theories, and discipline strategies that I believe would be effective in parenting. Reading the textbook, and the in class discussions have given me a deeper insight to what the ideas and the positive outcomes are using strategies that have been backed up by research.
Positive behavior support is a method that allows insight into an individual's reoccurring behaviors. PBS helps educators understand the background and supports of a student's challenging behaviors. Negative behaviors cannot easily be modified because they are considered to be functional and fulfill a motive for individuals. Challenging and negative behaviors receive assistance from reinforcements. PBS “has fostered a greater awareness among professionals toward furthering their understanding of the relationship between distant setting events and antecedents and problematic behavior”(Wheeler, J. J., and D. D. Richey, 2004).
Parent involvement in a child’s schooling has proven to be beneficial to the child regardless of the situation. The amount of the effectiveness of the parent involvement is directly related to the structure of the family that the child comes from. A National Household Education Survey (NHES) from 1996 shows that children from dual parent homes are more inclined to excel academically and become involved in extracurricular activities. More so, they are not as likely to repeat a grade or be given a suspension, especially if their fathers show interest and become involved (Nord). In 38.5 percent of dual parent households parents actively help their child with homework three or more times a week (National Center for Education Statistics). In today’s ever changing society dual parent ho...
...istics, 1999). McBride, Brent A., Sara K., Sullivan, and Ho-Ho (2005) reported about the achievement levels in a adolescent who grows up with a father, “A study of 1330 children from the PSID showed that fathers who are involved on a personal level with their child schooling increases the likelihood of their child's achievement. When fathers assume a positive role in their child's education, students feel a positive impact.” (p. 201-216). Children who do not grow up in a two parent homes, are more likely to fail and repeat a grade in school. It is also important to note that children who grow up in single parent families are less likely to have parents involved with the school, 62% of children with two parent homes have parents that are involved in school, while children from single parent homes have half of them involved in school (Nord, Winquist, West, 2001).
There is growing evidence that schools can make a difference in the development of a child. But can the schools do the whole job alone? What is the role of the parents? Parents are crucial assets in a child’s academic life. What are ways to get parents to assist their child at home, will the parents’ assistance with reading increase the child’s reading performance at school?
There are different factors that can influence a child to be successful such as family, friends, health, and financial sustainability of the parents. The ten-question survey we created will amplify our research question on what leads children to be successful. The survey would be best for this research targeting UTRGV students and parents because they are part of a population in the valley where some of grow up in a hard place and grow up to succeed. The survey is broken down into three sections, the first section addressing their own children or children they work with and the child’s behavior and education. Section two addresses how the subjects perceive the behavior and education of a child and the last questions are designed to find the occupations, ages, and financial help of the subjects surveyed to see the differences in evaluation of the information can be beneficial to see the similarities and differences of the mind of future parents and caregivers in order to increase the success of children.
Parents must have sense of ownership in their child’s success. Parents must know what is going on with their child at school and in their personal life. If there are negative indicators, action must be taken to correct these issues. A child’s success is affected by the interactions of the parents. If there are distracters in the personal life of the child it can be detrimental to their education; therefore, these distractions need to be minimized if not removed.
This literature review will define the overarching importance of parental value systems that utilize long-term academic discussions and encouragement for increased student performance in the domestic environment. The value system of parental involvement in student education is a primary feature of American education, which has been clinically evaluated in studies on academic success in the domestic environment. For example. the argument brought forth by Boxer et al (2009) defines the immediate effects of parental involvement as a value system that encourages academic discussions in the home to encourage the child’s interest in learning and success as a student. In line with longitudinal studies spanning a shorter time frame,
To conclude, my research shows a clear link between parental involvement and children performing better in school. Children who's parents are involved in their education are showing better performance and are achieving higher grades. They also show better behaviour, more enthusiasm, ambition and higher levels of engagement. compared with children who's parent are not involved in their education. My research also shows that parental involvement has great benefits for both children and parents in many ways, so much so that the most effective schools are those who encouraged parents to be involved.
Recent studies on parental involvement in education have found that there are many benefits for both the student and the adult when parents become involved in their children’s education. Without parent support, it is very difficult for a child to be motivated. From what I have seen growing up, only a small percentage of students are self-motivated, so it is absolutely vital that parents assist in the motivation process. I found this table to be particularly interesting and important.
The support of a parent is the single most important factor in predicting success in school for young children (Bourquin). Parents who make it a point to get involved with the child’s education are communicating the importance of education to their child (Heffer). There are a variety of ways in which a parent can get involved. This can range from at home help and encouragement with homework, attending athletic ...
Some parents think that once their children are at school, they can relax and let the education system take control. But this is not the case at all. As research shows, parents have an even greater influence on their children’s academic results than the school does. Most of a child’s ability to communicate, to relate to teachers and peers and their attitude to learning, is formed from home. Parents can help give their children a head start, by beginning their education at home.
Most recently there has been much heated debate regarding our children's education and the blamed responsibility to be in the hands of the educational system. However, researchers and educators generally agree that parents play an extremely important role in students' academic development. Parents have been found to actually have the advantage over peers, educators, counselors, and other professionals. This study examines the assumed relationship with a student's academic achievement and the amount of parental involvement they receive.
