Course objective learning
Through this course SWK 420, I learned how to apply the generalist intervention model and how I will be able to apply each one in my daily practice as a social worker. This program is focused on different objectives which allow me to address the process of engagement, assessment and intervention as well.
As a social worker, I am ready to apply my knowledge and skill, in fact, to work in variety environment, diversive culture and all levels such as Macro, Mezzo, and Micro. Nerveless, the evaluation stage is crucial and determinant for the social work and the client to measure the goal at this moment. At this point, with no question, I have to keep in mid the Code of Ethics between me as social work and my client.
During my participation as a facilitator in my group during this course I learned all those steps and also, I have a compromise with myself to respect everyone as a person, no matter who is the person. My responsibilities are to promote the well-being of clients and respect the self determination of the client an effort to identify and clarify their goals. I recognize I have my limits as a social worker and the client have the last word.
In summary, in the life, all beginners have the ending. But does not means that when a session is closed is done. Follow-up is important because the clients would feel that the session is over the engagement with the social work was true. Feedback always counts in a good communication and as a social work it is possible to have the same client in another session or in another
I believe that my developing practice style coincides with Common Factors, as well as evidenced based practice. I think that a successful social worker must have the ability to connect with the client, build a trusting relationship built on trust and professionalism, and ensure that the needs of the client are being addressed first and foremost. I only believe there should be frequent check-ins to ensure that the needs of the client are being met and acknowledged. There are times that we may want to insert our own interests and agenda in to the work with the client, but this can severely hinder and deter the client’s interest and future participation in therapy. What does it mean to become a social worker? Why was I committing two years of my life to school after renouncing further education? I asked myself this after I applied, waited anxiously for my acceptance letter and scrambled to figure out the finances after I was accepted. I could not have guessed that the first day of the Micro Human Behavior Social Environment (SWG 510) would capture my attention and thrust me into the professional world of Social Work. As I learned more about what it meant to become a social worker, I found myself aligning to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ethical Standards as reviewed through Foundation Course I’s first chapters.
Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
Ethics consists of factors such as culture, religion, and these continuously affect a person’s beliefs and ethics. As individuals continue to develop and adapt to different values and ethics. This is through past experiences and the expectations as our life pattern changes. Core values in social work practice are the code of ethics, informing our understanding of the difference and diversity. The social work profession is evaluated by a whole set of guidelines, measures put in place by regulatory bodies, allowing the movement to put in place new governmental laws and guides within this field.
A social worker must have the knowledge and skills to apply to intervention strategies that can address key issues through a wide range of tools (Miley, O’Melia & Dubois 2013, p. 7). To devise an intervention plan for the case study, Miley’s (2013, p. 112) four step model is utilised.

A part of a social worker’s task is to enhance the life of an individual through advocacy, educating, and engagement. By doing this, the social worker develops trusting ground for the individual delivering the message. Engagement is reported to be an establishment of a professional relationship with a client (Langer & Lietz, 2014). If the process of engagement is not established through security of the client, then therapy cannot begin (Bowlby, 1988). This process is the first encounter you have with the social worker.

Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
