General Surgery Residency Personal Statement
At some stage during the fourth year of my clinical rotations I recognised that
surgery and medicine both fascinated me, which made it extremely difficult for me
to decide between the two programs. I enjoyed the human interaction that medicine
offered and captivated by the diversity of cases I encountered. I saw medicine as an
opportunity to persistently review cases in subspecialty fields that I found
interesting, including gastroenterology and infectious diseases. But I also thrived on
the high-pressure and time-efficient environment of surgery that emphasized results
as its main driving force. The cases varied from simple outpatient procedures to life-
saving operations. After every case,

I felt a sense of accomplishment in having an attained goal alongwith sincere gratitude from patients as they were discharged. The ability of a surgeon to treat and often cure manifestations of a disease, which could have ended the patient’s life, had inspired me. This was most apparent in cancer patients. A desire to positively impact the lives of others while being intellectually engaged and constantly challenged led me to medicine. These same goals, combined with insights gained through hand-on experiences of my medical school training, lead me explicitly to pursue a career in general surgery.
I relish solving problems and using
my hands. I like the contentment that comes with instituting interventions that
result in absolute improvement.
Surgery requires willpower, intelligence, precision, patience, and compassion for
success. While some of these attributes are inherent in my character, others have
been achieved and improved throughout my medical career.
I am yet to complete my internship and do my general surgery clinical rotation, and
all I can say is that I’m sure this will motivate and make me more determined for
choosing my career in general surgery.
My ideal residency program is one that will train me to become the best surgeon I
can possibly be, acquiring my full potential while greatly contributing to my
community. I plan on a career as a general surgeon but academic career in
Oncological or Hepatobiliary Surgery are the areas that I would enjoy exploring as a
fellow. My goals are to excel as a student, a researcher, a team member and a
teacher, devoting myself to inspire students and patients just as I was. I bring to the
field my passion, optimism and thirst of knowledge. It is my conviction I will succeed
in such a challenging, demanding but rewarding
specialty.
I chose a career as a medical assistant because of the rewards I knew I would experience on a daily basis. Seeing a patient smile because I have helped them understand, or just making them feel comfortable with their visit, is just one of the many perks of my job. Upon graduating from an accredited college such as The College of Health Care Professions (CHCP), I now work for one of the most reputable hospitals in my area. Within two short years of committed studies, I obtained my associate of applied science degree, and then went on to obtain my certification as a medical assistant. There is nothing I have found more fulfilling, strong, secure, or rewarding then choosing to become a medical assistant,
... a patient down when they are scared. I know this career will not always be an easy one because you will come across some patients that can be combative, grumpy or scared and being able to learn how to communicate with them will make the process more smoothly. There will come a time when you come across a patient that will pull at your heart, as hard as it is I will have to keep my emotions in control but not so much so that I forget how to be gentle and caring with the patients because you may never know what their stories are.
In health delivery system, one common goal for all providers, doctors and administrators is to provide high quality health care services at low costs. But in the United States, health care spending has increased drastically, but outcomes are not efficient. In the recent study conducted by common wealth fund shows that United States health care spending is 50 percent more when compared to 13 top nations in the world. [1] This report also shows that despite of having high health care expenditure in the United States, the health care outcomes are worse when compared to other countries whose health expenditure is low. To address these problems and improve outcomes, patient safety and satisfaction, in the field of surgery the American
The profession I would like to go into is anesthesiology. An “anesthesiologist 's job is to administer anesthetics prior to, during, or after surgery, or any other medical procedures” (“29-1061 Anesthesiologists”). I chose this career mainly due to the fact that my mother is in the medical field. She helped elucidate what being an anesthesiologist is and also what the job entails. I’ve been thinking about this profession for a while because I have always had an interest in watching surgeries, and that is a major part of being an anesthesiologist. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career
My interest in anesthesia came about like the wounded path along a well traveled hiking trail, one of many that looks enticing and is just right, but didn't reveal itself until I got myself through the hurdles along the road. In anesthesia I am looking for a specialty that values quick thinking and detailed precision, a field with the right balance of intensity and patient interaction, and a career that can challenge me to perform at the top of my abilities.
Seven years ago, when I decided to enter the school of medicine, my dream was to be able to help people, to take responsibility of their health so they can live their lives and achieve their dreams. Having always been fascinated by science, pursuing this interest and practicing medicine became a passion to me.
The sub goals will be to do weights 4 days a week and cardio 2 days a week. This
Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. A world-class engineering student woul...
Having the support and guidance in a graduate nurse program, will allow me to further improve my assessment and clinical skills. I have a strong passion for learning about anatomy and physiology, which I believe the peri-operative department is the perfect environment to expand this knowledge. I love that everyday is different in the peri-operative department. Finally, my last reason for wishing to begin my nursing journey in the peri-operative department is due to my aspirations of volunteering with Mercy Ships. I would love to volunteer with Mercy Ships as they make such a difference in developing countries by providing surgical and health care
The role of the nurse in the preoperative area is to determine the patient’s psychological status to help with the use of coping during the surgery process. Determine physiologic factors directly or indirectly related to the surgical procedure that may cause operative risk factors. Establish baseline data for comparison in the intraoperative and postoperative period. Participate in the identification and documentation of the surgical site and or side of body on which the procedure is to be performed. Identify prescription drugs, over the counter, and herbal supplements that are taken by the patient that may interact and affect the surgical outcome. Document the results of all preoperative laboratory and diagnostic tests in the patient’s record
Furthermore, I am interested in expanding the field of medicine through research. I began working with Dr. Tyrone Hayes after taking his e...
I will look forward to becoming a healthcare administrator, and being part of a larger community. As healthcare educators, we are offered a chance to improve the quality of many peoples ' lives including family and friends. We are the faces of the community, with the common goal of building a healthy community. I want to be able to say I made a difference in someone’s life rather big or small. Being a healthcare administrator will be a lifelong career that I look forward to doing in the future.
...elieve simply writing these goals out will manifest themselves and I look at where I came from to where I am now and where I can be in the future. I am very enthusiastic about advancing both in academia and career wise above all I am excited about the positive affects my journey will exsanguinate to others clients, family members, friends, and colleagues. As these people will positively affect my journey too in my point of view most things are circular and transactional. We all contribute to each other one way or another.
I have always looked forward to the day I would apply for a residency in Internal Medicine. My experiences from even before I got admitted to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria to date have shaped the specialist I aim to be and I am confident my background has prepared me to succeed in this pursuit.
...ineering with first-class honours is my ultimate academic goal. After that, I am planning to further my study in PhD and make a research about the microstructure. It is easy to set the target but to achieve it need a lot of work and sacrifice the time and money. Strategic planning and full preparation needed to make the dream come to reality. I always tell myself that I have a potential to reach the target, and it is not impossible for me. To motivate me, I do read articles about the successful people as it may give me an inspiration and encourage me to be like them or even more.
